OS X Mavericks :: 10.9.3 - Search For Files Over 100MB Fails
Jun 19, 2014
I had an issue recently where I completely filled up my internal hard drive on my MacMini. I have take the time to clean it out using HD Cleaner and I now have 69.24GB of free space. Just to make sure there isn't any other junk I can get rid of I am attempting to go to "Files over 100MB" and I get a popup window that states "The operation can't be completed" with only an OK button to dismiss this. I am running OSX 10.9.3Â

I'm using Finder to search for files on a server connected to my computer at work. The search results I am getting do not include all the files that meet my search criteria. For example, I am looking through photo files for any files with "34" in the name. Some files show up, but not all of them. See screenshot. I am searching in the "Branded Photoshoot" folder, and I am getting some results (Branded Photoshoot/Hilton Universal/IMG_1434), but another file that is in folder, though a different subfolder, (Branded Photoshoot/Architectural Center/IMG_1534) is NOT showing up. What is causing that subfolder and its files to not be included in the search results?

I am using OS X version 10.5.7. Mail version 3.6 (935/935.3) As of yesterday my Mail program has failed. The symptom is that in the left window under 'mailboxes" when the "get mail" button is selected, the process activates, But the search fails - as though there is no internet connection. None of the accounts receive their mail, and the circle containing the exclamation mark signal appear. (Note, there is email arriving at the ISP. I checked using the ISPs webmail facility. I've tried retyping the password in the Mail settings, it's done correctly, so are the other settings for the ISP, but no luck). Sends have been successful.
I was hoping to extract (or archive? whatever that means) the actual messages and settings, then reinstalling the mail application. However, it seems from reading some posts that it might be necessary to instal the whole OS X system afresh to achieve this result. Of further concern to me is that it might not be possible to separate the messages in the mail application from the application itself. I don't want to just backup the mail folder then reinstal it, as i suspect there is something wrong with that folder, so I would just be reintroducing the bug into the reinstalled OSX... which would defeat the purpose.

After installing Yosemite on my iMac, Spotlight search results are minimal if at all (only contacts pop up)
I've adjusted Spotlight preferences by unchecking all search areas and rearranging the order of search preferences so documents, files and contacts are the only areas to search and still no luck.

I have a 2000+ page PDF, and I need to search the PDF and print those pages that have a specific search term. The last search I did turned up 617 pages, I would not be economical to have to go through and manually input every page to print them. I've tried every method I could think of with preview. I've tried Adobe. I've tried PDF Reader, PDF Reader X,PDF Reader ++Â ...

I'm banging my head against the wall with this problem. I have a new MBP 13", 4GB Ram, etc etc. When I transfer files across my network (or the office network), it will consistently fail to transfer a few of the files. For instance, I just tried to copy 50 photos to an SMB share on our server here at the office. The transfer window show the progress of 50 files, but when I look at the folder, there are only 48 files. Sometimes I get less, sometimes I get all 50. The same goes for my home network to an SMB share. I've confirmed this failure over N and G networks. The AP at home and the office are different models and I went as far as purchasing a new one for home since I thought it was the problem. Same results. Is there some hardware error going on here with my wifi card? Is there any way to test it? Are the SMB shares the problem?

I have a mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro running Mavericks, and a new 2 TB Time Capsule. I'm trying to install a new internal SSD to replace the four-year old one it came with. I swapped the new SSD in with no trouble, and booted my computer into Internet Recovery. I selected the option to rebuild my machine based on a Time Machine backup, and it churns away for a while until it hits about 85% installed, and then it reboots (and fails to startup properly, giing me a spinner on the gray apple screen).Â
The new SSD is twice the size of the old one. I've put it in an external enclosure and mounted it, ran disk utility on it to make sure that it's working properly. I can't think what else to do, and I can't imagine why it fails at the same point in the rebuild every time!Â

I've tried to download and install Mavericks 10.9.4 update but the installation fails with a checksum error. I've also tried the manual download/install which also failed. The message said that the update could not be installed to the default MacintoshHD drive.

My computer (OS X 10.9.3) and my iPad (iOS 7) are both connected to the internet via WiFi from the same modem. Fairly often the connection fails for the computer (sometimes once an hour or more) while it remains stable for the iPad. My internet provider finds no fault with the modem.Â

In iMessage:Â
When I go to delete old texts by pressing on the text and selecting the "more" menu, the trash icon in lower left sometimes does not appear. I have to close out of iMessage and reopen before it returns. I have to do this every time after deleting several texts.

I can find the desired 4 files in a â„¢ backup a week old. I select the four files in the Finder for that backup and click Restore in the lower right. Time machine fades back out, the same 4 files are still in the Finder window, but when I do a search for the files they are not to be found.Â

Syncing calendars between my iMac and devices continues to fail horribly.Â
It really never has functioned well from the Mountain Lion days. With Mavericks, Calendar syncing is useless. Must be rocket science!Â
If the system doesn't double everything up, it gets appointment times incorrectly.Â
Seems like Apple has determined that the iPad is Grand Lord of all calendar data—not the iMac. You can delete the data file on the iPad with SyncMac but the data is not gone. It remains in the iPad permanently waiting to take over.Â
This morning I used SyncMac to delete the data on the iPad to rid it of incorrect appointment times. Syncing again did nothing to fix the issue. Appointment times are all different and totally incorrect in the iPad compared to the correct data in the iMac.Â
I give up on the application. Print a blank calendar, have a pencil ready, and maintain your data the old fashioned way.Â
It used to just work. Not anymore and especially since iCloud which I will not use. I have no interest in giving my data to a second party in a foreign country so that they can grant me permission to access it. My clients don't agree to this arrangement. Nor do I.

Every time my iMac restarts or boots up, it brings me to the OS X installer page since last night.
I have done the disk utility check and my hard drive is ok. I then tried restoring from network which stops half way and reboot. I have also tried restoring from Time Machine but it has also stopped and rebooted several times.
My iMac is currently running OS 10.9.3

Running 10.9.3 on a MacBook Pro and just replaced the hard drive. I did a Time Machine restore and Mail is now hanging part way through the import. I saw a number of threads on this issue and and fixed permissions and deleted the Envelope Index files. Still no luck. I'm unsure what else I can do to isolate the problem. Is there anything that I can restore that would not require Mail to re-import? Â

I have a problem that when selecting a file that is either an attachment in email or is in my finder, double clicking on it fails to load the associated application successfully. For example, selecting a pdf file results in the pdf reader logo appearing on the lower bar on the screen, bounces up and down as if it is doing something, but just continues to bounce. I have to force quit it, then go to my application folder to load reader directly, and from within the reader I can then go and select the file. This isn't an application specific issue (It does it with Excel, Word etc).Â
It only started recently. I'm using a MBP summer 2010 with Mavericks 10.9.4. Everything else seems to work.Â

I recently had a external disk fail that was still under warrenty, so I dually went to the Apple store and got a replacement. After plugging it in I went into Time Machine and performed a restore (I was backing up the external disk to another external time machine managed disk). All worked perfectly so far. However, come the next backup I got "Time Machine Error Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while linking files on the backup volume"
Searching the forums I don't see any obvious solution. In the system log I also see 'Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: MyBigDisk' every time there is a backup.

I have a number of Mac's (all running Mavericks), connecting to a shared folder on a Mac we use as a 'server' (it doesn't run server software though, just Snow Leopard client).Â
Does Mavericks Mac's use the 'spotlight index' of this shared, networked, Snow Leopard Mac, or when we search it, it's just searching the actual file structure?Â
I'm having issues with searching this networked Mac (some files not being found and then a on later search they appear), and I don't know whether a rebuilding of the spotlight index on the networked Mac is a relevant troubleshooting step.Â

I have often been amazed by the speed and accuracy of Searching for Files on my MacBookPro.Â
As powerful as this SEARCH facility is, recently I wanted to search for a file that I knew had a RED tag assigned to it.Â
I couldnt find how to do that, it sounds so simple, but, as far as I can see, it cannot be done !!!Â
I would have thought that it should be easy to do, it is quite an important and useful thing to do, to be able to add coloured TAGS to files, so why can't I search for them, by colour ?Â

So I just started using Time Machine (had been using CCC). A quick scan of my backup shows that it's not backing up my Outlook email database file. This missing file is very concerning to me. First of all, this is one of my most important files, needless to say. But also, it makes me wonder, what other important files might Time Machine be deciding to skip without my knowledge. I went into my Time Machine preferences and have no exclusions in there

I had some spotlight issues and the index was successfully rebuilt. Mail however, still has a disabled search functionality. If I enter a term in the upper right search field no results appear. Rebooting and restoring Mail don't work. Mail is not excluded in the system prefs spotlight settings.

Sometimes titles do not match the content. If I have a bunch of files with similar title, i.e. Chapter 1, 2, etc., but I want to find the chapter with the jabberwock in it, I used to be able to type "jabberwock" and it would come up in my search window. Now it's only finding titles. I have so many files on my puter that it's taking me forever to find important documents. Where did they hide this feature??? Tearing my hair out.

We have 3 Macs in ouroffice. One running Leopard 10.5.6, one running Tiger 10.4.11 and one running 10.3.9.
I search the Tiger machine a lot over the network. I open the drive connected to the Tiger Mac and search in Finder. 10.5.6 has completely nuked it though.
It won't search from the root. If I go into a folder and search that individual folder it will find files, in that folder. But it doesn't even make an attempt to search when searching from the root.
Searching the Panther machine from Leopard works fine, and searching the Tiger machine from the Panther machine works fine - but I am damned if I can get the Leopard machine to search the Tiger machine.
I have added the drives on the Tiger machine to spotlight exlude and removed them so Spotlight reindexes, no different. Repaired all the drive persmissions etc.

I have had problems recently getting new folders to list alphabetically and went: Library>Mail>V2> removed envelope folders > and re-opened Mail and the listing worked properly.Â
Then I updated: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 (Update (Combo) [URL] ... This sorted out what was, after installing Mavericks, a slower computer. Very happy. However now, when I do a search in the Mail App. and then drag one email to a folder and then click on others and choose move to 'the same folder as one before' it does this but the search replenishes the same email and around and around we go. Before updating this was working fine. How to rectify the search to folder problem descibed above

Since the latest upgrade of 10.9.3 my and other office computers have problems with searches using spotlight and Finder search on internal, external and networked volumes. This is a big roadblock to our office workflow. Reindexing doesn't fix the issue and we can see clearly that the files we are searching for are there.

Running Preview 7.0, upon opening a PDF I am able to perfectly use the built-in search feature to search text made readable by OCR. After adding a text-box/annotating within the document, however, the search feature is messed up: the document will return matching hits for my term, but they aren't highlighted within the document body and I get the "funk" alert noise when clicking on results in left-hand results column. Â
Attempted fix: Printed the document as PDF. Searching this document only will return results if text that I search was typed in one of the text boxes I added. Â
