Since I upgraded my Intel IMac to a 2tb drive I've been getting the software update telling me there are two updates to load (involving a restart) the download works and the instalation appears to be normal until the restart when the system tells me the install failed. Anybody getting the same problem?

Whenever I click on the Apple logo and Software Update, the progress bar gets to about 20% in 3 or 4 seconds and then never moves again. I've left it for over an hour, no change. If I go to Boot Camp Assistant and try to Download the latest Windows support software from Apple, it gets to about 5% in 3 or 4 seconds and then never moves again. I can download from the web and other internet based services work. I am running Lion 10.7.3 on a 2011 iMac. I've tried creating a new user. I've also tried starting in Safe Mode. I have reinstalled Lion. No change.Â

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've got this older iMac but it has 2 GB and few weeks ago I managed to install Lion on a second partition of the internal HD. Sometimes the computer would hang or cause problems and I decided to install the whole system from scratch. After several failed attemps I finally figured, that the internal HD had a defect. So I decided to use an external usb drive to fix that problem for the beginning and before I think about changing the internal hard drive. I created 3 partitions with a GUID-table on the external usb drive and managed to install Leopard on the first partition and so far it's working fine and I boot from that external usb drive.Â
Now I wanted to install Lion on that computer. So I took that Lion thumb stick I purchased from apple and pressed the option key during boot in order to select booting from the thumb stick. It worked for the beginning and a message like "Installation" appeared. After a while the installation would stop with a message like "an error occured during installation, please try again". I did this two times but it never finished the installation.

Running Mac OS X 10.7.4 with M/S Outlook 2011. I am a two day old ¨baby¨ on a MAC [heretofore a M/S OS PC user]. Did a M/S update yesterday including a ¨CRITICAL¨ M/S Word 14.2.2 version installation.Following the installation, I got a notice that "an older version of M/S Database daemon is running and I must first delete "daemon" from Startup Items & then restart my computer.See MAC OS help." OK, I confirmed daemon was not in the Startup Items and restarted my computer. Now, when I attempt to open M/S Outlook I get a notice that "There is a problem with the Office database. To use the database you must rebuild it using the Database Utility"...Two choices " Cancel" or "Rebuild" If I chose "Rebuild" I am notitified immeditely that "To use the database utility, you must first quit all Office applications" [There are no office applications open EXCEPT the Database Utility which I confirm using the Mac´s Force Quit Application]. In any event, I <click> "Quit All" and after about 3 minutes a box popsup telling me the same thing "to use the Database Utility I must first quit all Office applications".Â
If I choose "Cancel" on the the original notice that stated "There is a problem with the Office database. To use the database, you must rebuild it using the Database Utility." the notice disappears from the screen for about 5 seconds and then reappears. As an aside, I followed the instructions detailed by Christopher Breen, Macworld.com dated 18 April 2012 article "Undoing the damage wrought by Microsoft´s Outlook update" wherein he details a procedure to "REPLACE" M/S Outlook´s Database Headers with a working copy and thereby rebuild the Main Identity Database. Here again, after I <click> "REBUILD" in the Database Utility it comes up "UNSUCCESSFUL" in rebuilding the Main Identity database.Â
Installation of Leopard on my Power Mac G5 failed. After that, I can't even boot into Tiger. Whenever I power on, it just stays at the grey Apple screen. I thought changing the hard disk might help. But my experiments proved that the same behavior persists even without any hard disk. Power on, "dong", grey apple screen: that's it. What happened?

I recently installed an ATI 5770 on my Mac Pro 1,1, works perfect in 10.6..4 We have another Mac Pro 3,1, whose 8800GT card died, so we replaced it with another ATI 5770. We cant upgrade the OS from 10.6 to 10.6.1 until we reach 10.6.4, all of the updates are failing.

I just moved to a new home and unfortunatly my fast internet connection through DSL (3.0 Mbits/sec) had to be changed to something a lot slower running over DirecWay satellite. Whenever I run the software update utility, I get a dialog box that pops up and says, "A networking error has occured: bad server response (-1011). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again. Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem."
Diagnostics pass, doing standard Internet tasks works just fine, as a matyer of fact, I can connect to the internet, surf, download email, etc. There is nothing different about the system other then I use a different internet provider. I'm wondering does Software Update look for a certain connection speed before timing out? I never got the (-1011) error before moving over to DirecWay.
I tried to update to the latest version of Lion -- I have 10.7, and received this message. Â

Make sure you are connected to the internet..." "Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem." However, my internet connection works fine for everything else. I do have two peripheral drives connected. One of them had the same system as my main drive. However, the problem persists even when they are disconnected and I reboot. I can get the updates if I reboot from the peripheral.

Since updating to Lion, and subsequently to QuickTime 10.1, many movies that worked fine before won't open now. I get an error that says, "A required codec is not available." Two things make this even more frustrating:
1. Some movies of the same type still open just fine. I can't seem to find a pattern that links the ones that won't open.
2. The movies that won't open are still available to preview in Finder. If they will play in Finder, why not in QuickTime? Isn't it just a QickTime "plug-in" that plays them in the Finder?

I have a strange boot issue having (tried) to install EFI 2.7 update. When I restart the laptop, it 'chimes', displays a grey screen, then chimes, displays a grey screen, forever. I hit the bower (off) button for 5 secs or thereabouts, and restart, same thing. I do this 4 times and finally it reboots. But the EFI update still appears as needing to be installed (software update tells me it is not installed). Update history shows however that it IS installed. I can go through this process any number of times. I now have Software Update history showing quite a few installs opf the EFI 2.7 update. If I just do a restart without installing, I also go through the same fail to restart / fail to start / ... / eventually restart sequence.
So it seems now that the laptop will only start after 4 failed restarts and finally it starts. After starting it all appears to be perfectly fine. Nothing strange in the console logs that I can see. The failed reboots don't seem to register in the console logs - I suspect that the failure to restart is pretty early on in the boot sequence, well before it tries to load any semblance of the OSX kernel. It is almost as if it is trying to boot from someplace other than the disk ... until eventually it gives up and tries the disk. (I have tried booting with and without network cable - no difference) I don't know enough about mac bootup sequences to know if there is some config/setting that is screwed up causing this odd behaviour.

I have a Mac mini (~2008) running Snow Leopard. I updated my software today (haven't done this in probably several months) and immediately afterword, my Apple aluminum wired keyboard no longer responds. (The mouse when attached through the keyboard also no longer responds.) However, the keyboard still functions just fine on a separate MacBook Pro that I have, it just won't work on the Mac Mini. (I tried different USB ports with no difference.)
I wasn't smart enough to write down what upgrades actually occurred prior to my last update, but there were only 4 items (I think one was Safari, one was iTunes). If there are no better ideas, I guess I will have to try a system restore from Time Machine which predates my latest bad "update". I'd rather not have to go there if I don't have to.
I just tried to update my system to the latest update release on 6-11-2012 and it fails and got stuck to a blanck screen. When I try to reboot the system I get an "unable to find driver for this platform" "ACPI".

When I try and use software update, it will display "checking for new software" and go about 80% of the way in the bar, then freeze. The bar stops animating, I get a spinning wheel when I mouse over it, etc.
I also cannot force quit software update when it does this, and not even "killing" the application does anything. It also hangs on shutdown, so if I want it to go away, I have to do a hard reboot.
I decided to download the 10.5.7 combo updater, and use that.
So I did.
However, the combo updater hangs at "configuring installation" for over an hour. I can force quit that, however.
I don't know much about mac troubleshooting, I have repaired my disk permissions plenty of times, and also ran verify disk, and it believes the disk is fine.
I'm running into an issue (a new issue) with my mbp. Every time I run the software update, it seems to download all the files just fine. Once it tries to install, it tells me an error has occurred, although it doesn't go into too much detail. I tried repairing the disk permissions, then I tried clearing /Library/Updates/.
The updates I have available are: iMovie Update 8.0.6, iPhoto Update 8.1.2, Mac OS X Update 10.6.3, Brother Printer Software Update 2.3, Airport Base Station Update 5.5.1, iTunes 9.1.1, and Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 3.2.

This has been happening consistently when I try to burn DVD's, during this time the drive stalls and I am not able to eject. (Possibly because software is trying to write with faulty hardware maybe?) The error message changes if I try to burn DL DVD 's. Also CD's often fail while burning some do complete. Errors also occur with Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere CS5 and DVD Studio Pro. Â

I did a problem free install of Win-doze xp pro sp.2 via Boot Camp and all was well, everything went off without a hitch... However I only partitioned 35 GB for Win-doze which after some thought I realized that having installed windoze for the sole purpose of playing games (which require alot of space) Anyway, I played a few games like "Crysis" and "The Last Remnant" both worked fantastically but I didn't want to get too far in them just to have to re-do the boot camp later and lose the data, so I went ahead and uninstalled the windoze partition and proceeded to go through the motions again, However this time around I set aside a 200GB partition. My headphone jack fails intermittently. I have speakers hooked up to it and sometimes sound will not play through the speakers. Even if I disconnect the speakers and plug in headphone sound does still not play through the headphones. I have even tried restarting and that does not work. In my system preferences (In Sound Panel) it shows that something is connected to the headphone jack. I have already had the entire logic board replaced once (under warranty) and that seemed to fix the problem for a couple months. If I wait about a day or less magically the speakers start working again. This has happend twice. Has anyone else had this problem? I have about 2 weeks left on my warranty. It almost seems like it is a software problem now, but I am not sure.

I have done the disk utility check and my hard drive is ok. I then tried restoring from network which stops half way and reboot. I have also tried restoring from Time Machine but it has also stopped and rebooted several times.
