Intel Mac :: Lion Won't Let To Delete A File
Mar 31, 2012
When I try to drag what appears from the icon to be an Excel xlsx file into the trash, I get a message that says, "The item A220D310 can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted". When I try to "Get Info" to see what the file is, I get nothing. Excel recently locked on me andf was auto started and I do not need the file and want it off of my desktop. How can I get ride of this file?

I can not delete a .tmp file from my desk top. The file is a partial PDF download that was stopped. I have restarted the computer, completed the download and deleted the downloaded file. Still it remains. Acr19142891428544-21780.tmp is the file name.

"The operation can't be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File > Get Info, make sure "Locked" is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section. When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again." With the file I am trying to delete I have clicked the lock to unlock the file under the "get info" and then I close the file out. If I re-open the file the lock symbol shows the file is locked again. Under sharing and permission I have selected the "Read&Write" option. I have searched all over the web and cannot find a way to delete this file or even keep it unlocked. I am running Lion.

When I put it in the trash and tries to delete it, it tells me that it is in use, even if it's not, and no program but the finder is running. So I've gone with the terminal solution.I type "sudo rm-f " with a space after the f, drag my file. It ask me for my password that I type, and it says command not found. And then if I type sudo rm-f again, it tells me again that the command is not found. It was like a second ago, and not anymore?Does anyone have an idea on how to get rid of that file?

There appears an unknown file on the desktop. I cannot delete it, cannot open information about it, cannot move it away. When trying to delete it a message appears "This file cannot be moved into trash". I have no idea what it might be, however I want to delete this file. This file might be seen on the desktop only, but not in the finder window.

I am playing around with HD video and have a very large Quicktime File (12.5GB) that froze my computer while rendering. I need to delete it. (CRASH: screen freezes and dark line slowly comes from top to bottom and once entire screen is slightly darker, a post in the middle pops up and tells me to turn off computer by holding power button).Â
After a lot of trial and error, it seems the problem is that the computer can't handle the massive deletion. Unlike a lot of other similar issues on this forum, this is a single file and not hundreds, so i can't delete portions at a time and be done with it. I have run through all my ideas and need help on how to delete this file from my computer and have come up with two possible ways:Â
1 - Split this video into smaller files. I dont know how to do this: I have SPLIT-CONCAT but that duplicates (then splits) and does not actually split the original. I tried "replacing" the video with the same-named smaller file and it crashed the computer.Â
2 - Change preferences on this computer somehow to allow this massive deletion. I tried a force empty through terminal and it did the same crash. I dont know if there is a preference (disk manager) or otherwise to get rid of this file. Â

How to get IMovie to recognize that I changed the dates of movie clips that I had to import into IPhoto. Subsequently I deleted an event in IPhoto and the darn thing still appeared in IMovie so that option of just deleting and starting all over again seems not to work. (I did not go into trash and really delete it so IMovie might just follow the clips to Trash!) I happened to find that in the Iphoto Library is a file called IMovie Data (In Thumbnails file folder). If I delete that file, will it cause IMovie to regenerate the thumbnails and put all of my photos and clips in the data order I now have corrected in IPhoto?

I file has appeared on my desktop. I believe it's a temp file created while downloading something in Safari. When I try to delete it, I get "The item x can't be moved to the trash because it can't be deleted". I tried right click > Get Info, and nothing happens (the info dialog does not appear). I tried ls -al on my desktop, and the file doesn't appear in the list.

Suddenly Finder keeps asking me to input my password whenever I delete a file to the trash. Emptying the trash is fine, though.I thought maybe I had clicked an option in Onyx that caused this, but having looked several times, I can't see anything in Onyx that would cause this. I've tried repairing disk permissions using Disk Utility, with no effect.

I was using Logic Pro X and the program crashed before I could save my project. There is now a file called "untitled" that appears to be a Logic Project file, however I cannot delete, open, rename, and move it anywhere. When I try to click and drag the file icon, it doesn't allow me to move it anywhere.  Â
When right-click on the file, it pops up the window, but there are only a few options available. I went to "get info" and saw that the file permissions are "unknown". I've tried repairing disk permissions in the disk utility, however the file is still unaccessible. It's not a large file (only 578K), but it would still like to remove it.Â

got automatically put into the Logic Pro discussions, however it's not really a Logic question or issue, more of a disk permission issue (I think..). Here is the original post: URL.... I'm stuck with this file on my system and how to remove it.Â

I am relatively new to the Mac. I have a Macbook Pro 2.2GHz. Today, a file keeps popping up on my desktop. It is named .DS_Store. The icon looks like a text document. I won't open it cuz I'm afraid of what it is, lol (Windows still clogging my brain). Anyway, I can drag it to the trash and delete the trash, but after a bit, it reappears.
Any idea how to get rid of it?

After I installed OS X I decided to go through my other partitions & do a little spring cleaning. In all, I trashed over 400MB of crap, but one file has refused to be deleted (it's a locked file left over from the old 3Com ISDN modem I had). When I try to empty the trash I get the following message:
"The operation cannot be completed because the item 'IQ320.BIN' is locked."
So, I look through the system help & find out that I either need to log in to OS X as the user who created the document ('root') or restart into OS 9 & unlock it from there.
Well, neither tactic has worked thus far. I restarted into OS 9 but found out that I can't access the file because it's in the trash (in OS X), which is an invisible directory (/Langly/.Trashes/102/). So then I restarted into OS X, logged in as root, but I still couldn't delete it. Desperate, I opened terminal, switched to root (su) found the files, but still can't delete the darned file. I tried rm, mv (thought if I moved it to somewhere that OS 9 could see it...), even chown, but each time I got "Operation not permitted." Any thoughts out there?

Have just installed 10.7.4. Now, I finally have to hose PPC (and even some hangover Classic) applications. I know, I know, I should have done it earlier, before even Snow Leopard. For me, the easiest place to ID them is in ABOUT THIS MAC ➜ MORE INFO ➜ SYSTEM REPORT ➜ SOFTWARE ➜ APPLICATIONS ➜ which in the sub categories of CLASSIC and PPC are rosters of > 250 items. How to trash them from this window? Or elsewhere? I’ve tried click-and-drag (both singly and by batch) delete (both singly and by batch), all unsuccessfully.
