I have a 13" MacBook Pro Unibody with 2gb of ram in it. I am waiting on my 4gb to come in the mail and I am going to replace it tomorrow. Currently I am dual booting into Windows 7 with VMWare and it only has 512mb allocated to it. Is there anyway I can reallocate a different amount of RAM to Win 7 without doing a full reformat?
View 3 Replies View RelatedRight now I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit in bootcamp and am ready for a change. What I would ideally like to do is to switch over to Win7 64bit (in order to utilize my 4gb of ram) without having to reinstall all of my windows applications and games. Right now I'm really looking for the easiest and most efficient way of doing this (assuming it's possible to transfer between a 32 and 64bit operating system).
What I had planned was to do things in this order:
1) Clone my bootcamp partition to my external hard drive using winclone.
2) Erase my bootcamp partition
3) Install Win7 to the bootcamp parition
4) Use the Windows Easy Transfer tool to migrate all of my vista files from the external hard drive over to Win7
5) Hopefully enjoy a much improved OS with all my programs fully functional
Please tell me if I have neglected something or if there are any potential problems along the way. If it maters I have an early 2008 Macbook Pro, 2.5ghz, 4gb ram, 8600m 512mb.
Am using OS X Lion 10.7.3, All of a sudden Finder ALWAYS asks for my password each and everytime I try to delete or move a file- How can I remove this?

Here's my setup: OS X on the first partition of my HDD (partition name Mac) and Win7 on second partition (partition called Bootcamp) but I am not running Win 7 via bootcamp, I am running it via VMFusion which is taking 150 out of 250gigs or partition Bootcamp. For some reason I copied a few sensitive documents into partition Bootcamp, then I moved them to trash when in OS X, then when I go to secure delete it gives me this error: (you can click the image to see it full size). I then tried going into Win7 to securely delete it from there but Win7 does not seem able to access that partition.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I put it in the trash and tries to delete it, it tells me that it is in use, even if it's not, and no program but the finder is running. So I've gone with the terminal solution.I type "sudo rm-f " with a space after the f, drag my file. It ask me for my password that I type, and it says command not found. And then if I type sudo rm-f again, it tells me again that the command is not found. It was like a second ago, and not anymore?Does anyone have an idea on how to get rid of that file?

There appears an unknown file on the desktop. I cannot delete it, cannot open information about it, cannot move it away. When trying to delete it a message appears "This file cannot be moved into trash". I have no idea what it might be, however I want to delete this file. This file might be seen on the desktop only, but not in the finder window.

When I try to "Get Info" to see what the file is, I get nothing. Excel recently locked on me andf was auto started and I do not need the file and want it off of my desktop. I am relatively new to the Mac. I have a Macbook Pro 2.2GHz. Today, a file keeps popping up on my desktop. It is named .DS_Store. The icon looks like a text document. I won't open it cuz I'm afraid of what it is, lol (Windows still clogging my brain). Anyway, I can drag it to the trash and delete the trash, but after a bit, it reappears.
Any idea how to get rid of it?
I file has appeared on my desktop. I believe it's a temp file created while downloading something in Safari. When I try to delete it, I get "The item x can't be moved to the trash because it can't be deleted". I tried right click > Get Info, and nothing happens (the info dialog does not appear). I tried ls -al on my desktop, and the file doesn't appear in the list.

Suddenly Finder keeps asking me to input my password whenever I delete a file to the trash. Emptying the trash is fine, though.I thought maybe I had clicked an option in Onyx that caused this, but having looked several times, I can't see anything in Onyx that would cause this.I've tried repairing disk permissions using Disk Utility, with no effect.

I was using Logic Pro X and the program crashed before I could save my project. There is now a file called "untitled" that appears to be a Logic Project file, however I cannot delete, open, rename, and move it anywhere. When I try to click and drag the file icon, it doesn't allow me to move it anywhere.
When right-click on the file, it pops up the window, but there are only a few options available. I went to "get info" and saw that the file permissions are "unknown". I've tried repairing disk permissions in the disk utility, however the file is still unaccessible. It's not a large file (only 578K), but it would still like to remove it.

got automatically put into the Logic Pro discussions, however it's not really a Logic question or issue, more of a disk permission issue (I think..). Here is the original post: URL.... I'm stuck with this file on my system and how to remove it.

Network file sharing has always been buggy in my windows/mac mixed environment, but I managed to live with it. It worked for 85% of the time. However, since upgrading to SL, it now works less than 5%. It keeps telling me "there was an error connecting to the server. please check ip addr, etc.......". It'd work for a few minutes after each restart and then resume its habit of annoying the hell out of me. Is this a common problem with Sl and Win 7? (BTW, win7 to win7 or win7 to vista file sharing works perfectly).
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter I installed OS X I decided to go through my other partitions & do a little spring cleaning. In all, I trashed over 400MB of crap, but one file has refused to be deleted (it's a locked file left over from the old 3Com ISDN modem I had). When I try to empty the trash I get the following message:
"The operation cannot be completed because the item 'IQ320.BIN' is locked."
So, I look through the system help & find out that I either need to log in to OS X as the user who created the document ('root') or restart into OS 9 & unlock it from there.
Well, neither tactic has worked thus far. I restarted into OS 9 but found out that I can't access the file because it's in the trash (in OS X), which is an invisible directory (/Langly/.Trashes/102/). So then I restarted into OS X, logged in as root, but I still couldn't delete it. Desperate, I opened terminal, switched to root (su) found the files, but still can't delete the darned file. I tried rm, mv (thought if I moved it to somewhere that OS 9 could see it...), even chown, but each time I got "Operation not permitted." Any thoughts out there?
I am trying to delete an XLS file from a network drive and am getting a message that says the file cannot be deleted because it is in use.I can't see where it is in use and have tried to reboot the computer to no avail. I can delete other files but several XLS files are giving me this message.

A couple times now, I've tried to copy DVDs onto my computer, then realize they won't work. I think it's because I copied the files and not the movie, but that's not the issue. The issue is, when I go to delete them, I can't. My parents have kept a password on my computer since I got it about three years ago. It's a rare occasion when they take the password off for a few days. Under those circumstances, when the password is off, I can delete the file without any issue. But when the password is on, I can't even move the file to the trash. It keeps asking for a password. I can't even move it to a different folder. It's just sitting on my desktop, taking up space. There's not even anything in it, because I stopped the copying only seconds after it started.
My question is, how can I get around the password to delete this file? I can't restart my computer or anything, because I'll need a password to do that. I need some trick that will bypass the password and get it into the trash. And deleted from the trash, if possible.
I have an excel file that I can't delete - any suggestions on how to get rid of it?I can't move to trash, can't open, can't do anything to do. The message I get is "the item B4D19F00 can't be moved to trash because it can't be deleted".

I downloaded a program and soon decided not to have it on my Macbook Pro (Mid 2009) anymore. After I had delted all the files I did a Finder search just to make sure there were no more files associated with the program. I found one file that has no image to it, but it has the name of the program. I can not move or drag the file, or delete it keyboard shortcuts or by right clicking it, it is also NOT locked. I can "Get Info" but there isn't anything there, it has no location and takes up Zero KB. I know this isn't such a big deal considering it basically doesn't exist, but it annoys me to know that it is there somewhere because it turns up when I search for it. Is there any way to get rid of this? I have tried restarting finder, I have tried restarting computer, I have tried turning the computer off and turning it back on, repairing disk permissions. I don't know what to do! I am running Mac OS X 10.7.3 on a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro, (2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB memory.
