you can rename, move or even trash a file when you still have it opened in preview or textedit. In win, such action will be stopped by the message "can't do that, the file is open somewhere". Would that data going to be kind of homeless or become a "ghost"?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy Finder on my iMac keeps freezing when I try to move a folder or file, or when I try to empty the trash can. I have tried to Force Quit Finder, but when I do it does not start back up and I have to manually turn the computer off with the power button.

got automatically put into the Logic Pro discussions, however it's not really a Logic question or issue, more of a disk permission issue (I think..). Here is the original post: URL.... I'm stuck with this file on my system and how to remove it.Â

is there a better way of renaming a file / folder than clicking to select the icon, waiting a couple of seconds, then clicking again on the name (and waiting a tick) to edit the fil name? like a keyboard shortcut im not aware of, im a seasoned mac user but need enlightening,
View 24 Replies View RelatedI recently had my 15" MacBook Pro serviced because of a hard drive failure. It required that the operating system (OSX 10.7.3) be reinstalled. The reinstall was handled by the Best Buy Geek Squad store where I originally purchased the Mac. They named my home folder using only my first name in lower case letters. I would prefer my full name like my previous install. DoI understand correctly that it is NOT possible to rename this folder? Would I have to reinstall Lion and wipe all the data to do this? Or is there a simple way to rename the folder.Â

'the item "....." cab;t be moved to the Trash because it can't be delete.' The file is just a Safari download icon you often get when downloading a file, and I can't move it or do anything to it, I can't access its info or move it around the desktop.
View 6 Replies View RelatedOn Snow Leopard I was very used to pressing enter and renaming a file by simply typing a new name while preserving the extension. Now I've noticed that in Lion when you press enter and start typing the new name, you'll have to type in the extension too.

I have a folder action set up to open movie files in a conversion app but every time I add a new file it loads all the files in the folder. How can i exclude a file that has already been opened by the folder action. I can't move the file due to queing up moves for conversion if the file is moved after it is opened the the program doesn't know where to look for it. Ive tried Filter finder items by last opened and set it as today but that did not work. It opened nothing. May I could set it up to know if the file has been there longer then 5 min that the folder action should not open it.Â

After installing Lion, I can no longer move program icons from my applications folder to a sub folder. When I do, it makes a copy and leave the original in the applications folder. When I then try to delete the icon in the applications folder it tells me it's required by the OS and won't let me delete. I'm forced to keep certan applications such as Time Machine and Stickies in the application folder.

I had an image saved to my desktop, so in order to clean things up I created a new folder on my desktop and copied the image to that folder, however when I went to delete the image it asked for my password which I provided, I got the audio notification that it was deleted but the file remained on my desktop. I then tried to delete the folder and received the same password prompt, then the audio trash notification but the folder remained. How do I delete these?

I ripped a few movies from my personal DVD collection onto my MBP to watch on the road during a recent business trip. When I got home, I went to delete them by putting them in the trash. It worked, or so I thought. The folders containing the movie disappeared from my desktop, but the 6 or 7 gigs of space that they took up were still on my HD (I have the status readout below my HD icon on my desktop and it was unchanged after I trashed the movie). After some research I learned that trashing the file doesn't actually take it off the HD, that I'd have to empty my trash bin to get rid of it permanently. But like many of you, I don't want to completely empty my trash. Is there a way to permanently get rid of individual files/folders? I saw a few ideas. I saw a program called permanent eraser. I also saw where someone suggested using Terminal and some rf commands.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSomehow, when installing RealPlayer I managed to get something called RealNetwork (a Folder full of files) installed in my User Library. It was 395.62 GB so must have been some sort of malware. I was able to find it and delete it from my hard drive. BUT I had backed up my hard drive to a non-bootable backup the day before so that file is still in the invisible Library folder on that drive, taking up almost 400 GB there, too. Â
How to delete it from the backup drive since I can't boot that drive?Â

I have set up my mom with an older Macbook Pro of mine to save her from the evils of the PC. I set up two users, one for her and one for me; hers is uber simple (big icons, only the essentials in the doc) mine is crazy complicated. We share apps, of course, which was fine until I realized she is going to want to download Mah Jongg game apps and the like from the App Store, and I would LOVE it if I didn't have to have all that cluttering up the root Applications folder. I already tried to move one app from root to her user's Applications folder and all that moved was an alias, the app stayed at root. So how does one move these things? Is there a way via the finder? Can I use terminal.

This is strange. All of a sudden I am unable to rename a Folder from untitled folder to anything. I can highlight it, but nothing happens when I try to type in a new title. I tried it on the Desktop and Finder. Any ideas? It would be prety hard to find anything if everything was in folders titled 'untitled'.
