OS X Mountain Lion :: Cannot Move / Delete Or Open File / Unknown Permissions

Jun 4, 2014

got automatically put into the Logic Pro discussions, however it's not really a Logic question or issue, more of a disk permission issue (I think..). Here is the original post:  URL.... I'm stuck with this file on my system and how to remove it.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Can't Open / Delete File With Unknown Permissions

Jun 4, 2014

I was using Logic Pro X and the program crashed before I could save my project. There is now a file called "untitled" that appears to be a Logic Project file, however I cannot delete, open, rename, and move it anywhere.  When I try to click and drag the file icon, it doesn't allow me to move it anywhere.
When right-click on the file, it pops up the window, but there are only a few options available.  I went to "get info" and saw that the file permissions are "unknown".  I've tried repairing disk permissions in the disk utility, however the file is still unaccessible. It's not a large file (only 578K), but it would still like to remove it.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Delete An Unknown File

Mar 31, 2012

There appears an unknown file on the desktop. I cannot delete it, cannot open information about it, cannot move it away. When trying to delete it a message appears "This file cannot be moved into trash". I have no idea what it might be, however I want to delete this file. This file might be seen on the desktop only, but not in the finder window.

ITunes :: Unknown Permissions For Its Library File?

Apr 24, 2012

iTunes often tells me it can't save my library file anymore. When I check my itl file in the Finder, it isn't linked to iTunes anymore ("open with") and my permissions are listed as "you have unknown access". If I quit and restart iTunes it says the Library file cannot be found. A simple reboot solves this problem every time, but it shouldn't happen in the first place.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Can't Move Files From External HD

Sep 7, 2014

Currently running OSX 10.8.5. Trying to move iTunes Music directory and iPhoto to new external hard drive. They currently reside on a 1.5T WD My Passport drive. Need to copy the directories to my iMac (3.4 GHz i7) desktop and then onto my new external HD. When trying to copy to my hard drive, I get the popup: "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)."

These popups occur every few audio files. Thing is the files are not corrupt (I can play them in iTunes) and the volume was confirmed as clean by disk utility.

How do I move all the files? Line command via Terminal (if so I need specific instructions as I am not a coder).

I wanted to move the files originally because I was having problems in iPhoto. Rebuilt iPhoto using iPhoto Library Manager, but in rebuilding and reimporting images, I ran out of hard drive space. Saving iPhoto is paramount because it's the only source for my digital photos.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Wrong File Permissions Shown On Remote Drive?

Jun 7, 2012

I found a strange glitch with file permissions when accessing a network drive, on Lion. I am accessing my internal drive on my iMac over Wi-Fi from my MacBook. I am logged in under my user name. I notice that for every file on the remote drive (on my iMac), "staff" and "everyone" are ready only, but read & write access is reserved for "macports". Macports? It does not list my own name as having read & write permissions, and so I cannot save any file to this remote drive. When I access the drive locally on my iMac, the permissions appear correctly for the same files, i.e. my own name is listed as having read & write access. Is there some kind of glitch where the file permissions are misread when accessing a drive over the network?

OS X Mountain Lion :: Time Machine - Restore File To Different Computer

Aug 27, 2014

How to restore a file from the Time Share volume of one mac to a different mac.

I have 2 machines: macbook pro & mac air both both running latest mountian lion.  Each keeps its own time share volume on a network server.  The two have some sync'd shares, but in general, they are not fully sync'd.

the macbook pro is in the shop for repair for a few days and I'd like to fetch some of it's files from its time machine backup onto the macair.  I'm a little reluctant to simply fire up Time Machine on the mac air and respecify it's storage volume to be the macbook pro's volume.  I'm concerned about internal configuration changes Time Machine might make to the mac air, including making changes that might cause it to have to do a full (not differential) back up when I reconfigure the mac air's Time Machine to use it's own backup volume after I'm done getting files from the macbook pro backup volume.

In addition to simply getting access to some of the files of the mac in the shop, I want to get the mac calendar from that machine and use it on the mac air.  I understand that this may be somewhat trickier.
