View 7 RepliesI need to add something to the HOSTS file, here is the error message that appears when I try to log in. TextEdit[190:c0b] *** CFMessagePort: bootstrap_register(): failed 1100 (0x44c) 'Permission denied', port = 0x4403, name = 'com.apple.TextEdit.ServiceProvider' See /usr/include/servers/bootstrap_defs.h for the error codes. Using: sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts It does open the file, but it is empty. Should it be empty? I can not save it after editing it. But, if i use sudo open -t /etc/hosts OR $ sudo nano /private/etc/hosts It doesn't give me any error, and it also opens the HOSTS file. But its empty! Im using MAc Osx 10.5 Any ideas of what's going on?

I noticed that in Lion my /etc/hosts and /private/hosts gets overwritten at boot time. This is rather annoying as I would use said file to store the IP to name translations of some local computers. Before editing I would always become root and use nano to edit the file.how do I make the changes to the hosts file permanent?

I'm new to Mac so please be gentle!
I've just added a couple of entries to my HOSTS file to test whether it works the same way in Mac OSX (SL) as it does in Windoze.
I've found it does... and it doesn't.
My 4 test entries are totally blocked if I use Safari, but they're NOT blocked in Firefox.
Could someone tell me in simple terms why this is so, and if there's something I can do to make Firefox obey the HOSTS redirects?
My computer will be shared for a couple of weeks and there are certain websites that i need to block... Let's say i want to block facebook, heres what i did:
Opened up terminal, then typed 'sudo nano /etc/hosts' Added '127.0.0.1 facebook.com' on the bottom, having them separated with TAB instead of spaces Pressed ctrl+o and enter to save the file, then ctrl-x to quit the nano thing. Then i typed 'dscacheutil -flushcache' for changes to immediatelly take place Quit terminal
Am i doing something wrong here? I can still open facebook.com in Opera after those steps.... Am i missing something?
i cant see the satari, file , edit , view etc on the top... when my pointer arrow up the top and pop down i can see this safari.. when i removed the pointer arrow.. the line was pop up ... how can it stay still no pop up... but i can see the corner the blue square with two arrow and i move the pointer arrow to this blue square make it smaller.... but how can the top to stop pop up make me cant see the safari etc.. i want is show the top file edit all time ..

I am trying to edit Haskell files with Text Edit. However when I save the file it automatically adds .txt or .rtf and won't let me use .txt. Even when I go into finder and change the file extension it immediately changes it back to .rtf or .txt. It works when I save perl files. How do I get Text Edit to save Haskell files? I am using Lion.

I have been working on a project in iMovie for a few days, and it has been working perfectly. Today, I opened up my project and I could not play the project (the red line would move, but no picture would show up in the upper right hand corner box) and ALL of the options in the "share" tab were gray and unable to click them. Many options in the "edit" and "file" tabs were unable to be clicked as well.
Another project i completed months ago is working perfectly. The clips in the events play/show up on the window in the upper right hand corner
I recently edited a resume on a friends Mac computer and sent a copy to myself to my email. When I received the file, it was locked. Might be a pretty simple question, but how do i unlock the file and continue to edit the copy on my computer? I'm using Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 at the moment if that makes a difference.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI use a text edit file as a to-do list; however, it doesn't play nice. When I click on its icon, it pops up somewhere other than where I want it. I've tried "Preferences" and TextEdit help on and off line. I can't find any info on it. I'm probably not using the exact words that 'help' would recognize. I've tried saying "Simon Says" too, but that doesn't work either.

I have tried to open it through terminal through the following comands: cd /etcsudo nano php.ini
got the error message Error opening terminal: xterm-256color.
so then I tried cd /etcsudo pico php.ini and got the same error message.
My Question is, to enable short_open_tag, do I need to edit the php.ini file or not. If I do, how? If not, how to I enable short_open_tag?
