Mar 23, 2012My MacBook Pro is running out of hard drive space, and the culprit is Time Machine. Apparently Time Machine stores local backups on the hard drive when it is not connected to the backup drive, and then is supposed to delete them when it does backup. However, this causes huge problems because I'm running out of hard drive space. I ran the following in Terminal to turn off the local backups:
sudo tmutil disablelocal
However, that has not freed up the hard drive space taken by the local backups.

Aug 27, 2014I excluded for one TM backup a sparse bundle disk image that I have been backing up regularly. I then immediately removed the sparse bundle disk image from the TM exclusions list, and now TM wants to back up the entire sparse bundle disk image, which contains an iPhoto Library (80GB). It seems that TM does not "see" the previous disk image backups.

Mar 24, 2012I've notice that when time machine does a backup to an external drive it creates a file "image backup" I would like to know why is this file empty? I've check through all my backups and everytime this file appears to be empty.
Also when Time Machine does a backup of your computer, then all the photos from photobooth should appear in the photobooth library file right?

(love it btw). but anyway my roomate also has a macbook and i let him back it up on my time capsule as well... now were both moving to different locations and i want to get rid of his backup to allow for more space.. how do i do this from my macbook?... is it possible?
if not would i have to reset it? or maybe get him to get rid of it on his macbook?.. (he would give me a hard time so id rather be able to just delete his stuff myself, and hes taking up significantly more space on it than i am so i want it off)

Jan 17, 2010I want to delete my time machine backup folder. I have other files on the disk and can not reformat. In the past, I have dragged the folder to the trash, and even though that worked, the process have sometimes taken hours, and on an old powerbook, it took more than 24h.
Right now I'm trying the terminal command sudo rm -rf. My aim was to save time by bypassing the trash. But the process has been going on for about 30 min already, and I see "Operation not permitted" after many or most of the lines. Does anyone know what that means?
What is the fastest way to just delete a time machine backup folder. Surely there must be a way of deleting a folder instantly, without the OS having to go through and verify every file?

Dec 3, 2008i have a macbook with an internal drive of which about 230gb if full and used.
I have a 250gb external which i have been using to back up with time machine, done it several times over a few months.
Now there is like 70gb left on the external, and when i try to back up, it says failed, not enough space on external.
But i thought when there is not enough space, it simply deletes and backs over older time machine backups.

Apr 24, 2012This evening I some how accidently "restored" a document I had been working on to a version I started about a month ago. I honestly have no idea how this happened since I hadn't even opened Time Machine when noticed the document was the old version (the program and document had been open on my laptop for days). Anyway, I thought maybe I could just go back to the version from yesterday or a few days ago, but it seems that once today's version is restored to March 28th's version, all subsequent versions are also restored. If there is any way to find a previous version of this document (that is not the March 28th one!), I would be estactic.

I recently used time machine for the first time in a long time. I use my external HD USB for the backup. After the back up was complete, I unplugged the USB cable. I got an error that I needed to put the HD away first (I wasn't thinking). And I didn't pay attention to the error either.
I thought the data was gone, when I didnt see the data in the back up file. I do see the back up file with that date on it. In the file is the .InProgress file. In that file, on right clicking, I see the contents of one folder. This folder has a very long name of numbers and letters. It shows no contents in the finder. THough I know the files must be here. The HD has capacity of 100 Gig. There is only about 20 gigs showing on it. Though there is only 20 gigs available. So, my back up data is there on the HD, and I assume it's in this "empty" file.
* How do I extract the saved files ?

Since upgrading to lion I keep getting the following message The identity of the backup disk has changed since the previous backup.The disk may have been replaced or erased, or someone may be trying to trick your computer into backing up to the wrong disk. And after this the drive disappears from the desktop appearing agian only after restart. What can I do do rectify this? Delete and re-intialise the drive?

Feb 10, 2012my TM wil not back up! It states that this backup is too large for the backup disk. The back up disk requires 573.50 GB but only 225.23 GB are available. The TM needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Upen TM perferences to select a LARGER backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding file.
Okay I;m sorry but obvioulsy I dont get this. I've never called Apple for help! I have every product they sell practically including Protection Plans I never used and no one will help me with this. My MAC is starting to have black or white screens and i can hear it running but it will not do anything so i have to reboot it, it screws up Enturage and then I have to rebuild that ( 5 times this year) anyway... I would like to back everything up- can I delete everything on the Time Capsule or Time Machine; god I dont even know what it is called Im so MAD... help if you can please. I'm going to have to take this to the genius people at the store and probably buy another computer but like before they will not save my files.

Spotlight can't locate this file, I've ran disk utility to verify and repair the internal drive, verified the external, no problems on both counts. I even tried allowing read & write privileges temporarily to everyone on both drives, but no luck.
OS X :: Unable To Retrieve Lost File / Backup Created Using Time Machine
Mar 25, 2010I have a file I alter once about a week, each time I alter it I save it as a new one, with a date included in the name.So I have a series of files something like
xxxxx march 13.numbers
xxxxx march 07.numbers
xxxxx march 01.numbers
etc.
This morning when I updated and saved the march13 file I accidentally saved it as xxxxxx march 13, not xxxxxx march 20 which it should have been. No problem, go into time machine and retrieve the march 13 file I thought.Its not there. Its not there from just before the save to any time it should be there !
Luckily I was able to retrieve it as I also have a once a week online backup so I went into the last one of those and retrieved "xxxxxx march13" which proves it did exist, it has a creation date of march 17 but if I look at TM for march 18 its not there - why isn't it in my time machine backup?
All the other files in that folder are as expected so the only thing that makes any sense to me is that TM hasn't been backing up over the past week or so but TM error logger shows no errors.

Jun 14, 2012i have a case where i have a large file (a sparse disk image) which at some point in the past seems to have become corrupt in the sense that there were problems reading it.eventually, i realized that attempts to clone the drive containing the bad file were failing (super duper reporting an error).an attempt to finder-copy the disk image also failed.i went to find backup copies of the file in question in my time machine backups and realized that the file did not exist in my backups.digging through system logs, i discovered that when time machine encountered an error when reading the file, it was failing silenty - that is, no error was reported via time machine - backups were seemingly completing successfully.so as a result, i went quite a long time with no backup of the failing file, nor any obvious warning that it was failing, even though time machine was encountering an error every time it tried to backup the file.
this seems like a major problem, perhaps even a design flaw in time machine.in fact, it is really the extreme opposite of the behavior i would consider "reasonable" for a reliable backup program.i somehow misinterpreting the data? any guess as to why time machine would not report when it tried to read a file during a backup, but failed?

It has been runing since november 2011.When I start a new backup, as it ask for, it takes at least 24 hours to finish - some times even longer.Is this normal? If not, what do I do?

MBP backs up everything on internal hard drive to Time Capsule at home, where we live during summer and spring. When moving to vacation home in fall and winter, MBP backs up everything to Time Capsule in vacation home.
During the 6 months at each residence, the backups work great to the Time Capsule at that particular house. However, after some time (maybe a week?), Time Machine displays an error in Notification Center: "Time Machine can't complete backup to Home Time Capsule" (when in vacation home) or "Time Machine can't complete backup to Vacation Time Capsule" (when at home).
It's obvious that this occurs because Time Machine was set to back up to 2 Time Capsules and expects both of them to be reachable. Is there a way to suppress these Time Machine errors for the time that we're away from one of the Time Capsules?
OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time-machine - Complete Backup Every-time?
Jun 25, 2012have a MacBook Pro 15" 10.7.4 which isn't working with TimeMachine any more When starting a backup, Time Machine tells me to backup 112kB (for example) .... an running and running, and after a short time "2kB from 112kB" ... and runnig and running and then "5kb from 112kB" and so on. The progress status is updating very slowly.
The weired thing is: the ".inProgress" file on the external hard drive (tried FireWire and USB connection) is growing to 85GB (the total used space on the hard drive) while Time machine status tells me it has saved some kB. And every backup is running in that way. Instead of backing up only the difference, all files where backuped - although the status is displaying a few 100kB - which should be the right size to backup.
- Repaired permissions > Same error
- Tried installing combo update > Same error
- Tried another external hard drive > Same error
- Tried cloning system to different hd > Same error
- excluded the Users home folder > Same error
- Interal hard drive speed > Over 70MB/s > OK
- External hard drive speed > Over 70 MB/s > OK
So had to be something with the System itself.
Applications :: Time Machine Taking Long Time To Backup - Changing Backup Time?
Dec 11, 2009I have looked into this a lot already. It is to much that Time Machine backs up every single hour! It would be nice to set it to something like 3 or 5 hours. I have tried a 3rd party app to do this, but... If my computer was off or asleep when it was supposed to back up, it would get an error. It would not just do the backup when i turned it on or when it came out of sleep like stock Time Machine does. I have also seen a way to change the time incraments in the Terminal.(I am very good with it, not a noob) I have tried this and it screws up time machine completely. Maybe it does not work with the newest OS X. By the way... I have a 2010 MacBook Pro, got it 2 months ago.
Does anyone know a solid 3rd party app, that will work seamlessly. Or has anyone changed the time in Terminal and are currently using something different than 1 hour. There is a lot of examples online, but I would like the codeing that you literally used.
OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Won't Backup
Jun 28, 2012For the past two days, Time Machine has been giving me an error message:I have an iMac with an internal hard drive of 2GB. Attached to the iMac is a 2GB external drive which is used only by Time Machine. The internal drive shows 888GB free. The backup drive shows 943GB free. I thought that when more space was required for backup, Time Machine would begin deleting old backups ... which is fine with me since old backups (say, six months and older) probably won't be of much use to me.
So I'm really puzzled by Time Machine's error.(TimeMachine has been running in this configuration for over a year now - never had a problem so far. No changes made to the config ever. And I run the Repair Permissions regularly ... last weekend I even did the Cmd-R permission repair in Lion.) Can I manually delete old backups? How will I know which ones can be deleted?

Jun 2, 2012There appears to be several threads regarding deleteing Time Machine backups but I can't seem to get the correct answer to delete the entire backup folder (Backups.backupdb). I move the location of my backups files and they are working fine now so I want to delete the folder on the disk it used to backup to. How can I do that? I have everything backedup to the proper disk so I don't need this folder any longer.
