Intel Mac :: Cannot Delete File - How To Keep It Unlocked
Feb 20, 2012
"The operation can't be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File > Get Info, make sure "Locked" is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section. When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again."With the file I am trying to delete I have clicked the lock to unlock the file under the "get info" and then I close the file out. If I re-open the file the lock symbol shows the file is locked again. Under sharing and permission I have selected the "Read&Write" option.I have searched all over the web and cannot find a way to delete this file or even keep it unlocked.I am running Lion.

I can not delete a .tmp file from my desk top. The file is a partial PDF download that was stopped. I have restarted the computer, completed the download and deleted the downloaded file. Still it remains. Acr19142891428544-21780.tmp is the file name.

When I try to "Get Info" to see what the file is, I get nothing. Excel recently locked on me andf was auto started and I do not need the file and want it off of my desktop. How can I get ride of this file?

I am playing around with HD video and have a very large Quicktime File (12.5GB) that froze my computer while rendering. I need to delete it. (CRASH: screen freezes and dark line slowly comes from top to bottom and once entire screen is slightly darker, a post in the middle pops up and tells me to turn off computer by holding power button).
After a lot of trial and error, it seems the problem is that the computer can't handle the massive deletion. Unlike a lot of other similar issues on this forum, this is a single file and not hundreds, so i can't delete portions at a time and be done with it. I have run through all my ideas and need help on how to delete this file from my computer and have come up with two possible ways:
1 - Split this video into smaller files. I dont know how to do this: I have SPLIT-CONCAT but that duplicates (then splits) and does not actually split the original. I tried "replacing" the video with the same-named smaller file and it crashed the computer.
2 - Change preferences on this computer somehow to allow this massive deletion. I tried a force empty through terminal and it did the same crash. I dont know if there is a preference (disk manager) or otherwise to get rid of this file.
I am on a 2006 Intel iMac running 10.7.4

How to get IMovie to recognize that I changed the dates of movie clips that I had to import into IPhoto. Subsequently I deleted an event in IPhoto and the darn thing still appeared in IMovie so that option of just deleting and starting all over again seems not to work. (I did not go into trash and really delete it so IMovie might just follow the clips to Trash!) I happened to find that in the Iphoto Library is a file called IMovie Data (In Thumbnails file folder). If I delete that file, will it cause IMovie to regenerate the thumbnails and put all of my photos and clips in the data order I now have corrected in IPhoto?

I'd like to be able to view a folder's info and have the the lockpad remain unlocked. This is so I can change permissions much faster.I am not having the easiest time with the custom access panel, because I have to reopen it multiple times so be able to get the settings correct. For instance, I tried adding a user but it would not show up so I closed the Info window and reopened it. The user finally showed up, but then I had to `unlock` this to make further changes. This is when keeping it unlocked would make things easier for my privileges.

I have a Mac Book Air running 10.7.3. The Sharing Folder under system preferences is frozen. The padlock is unlocked. How do I unfreeze the sharing folder so that I can click on any item in this folder? The sharing folder freezes every time I open it - so you cannot select anything in the sharing folder.

I am relatively new to the Mac. I have a Macbook Pro 2.2GHz. Today, a file keeps popping up on my desktop. It is named .DS_Store. The icon looks like a text document. I won't open it cuz I'm afraid of what it is, lol (Windows still clogging my brain). Anyway, I can drag it to the trash and delete the trash, but after a bit, it reappears.
Any idea how to get rid of it?

After I installed OS X I decided to go through my other partitions & do a little spring cleaning. In all, I trashed over 400MB of crap, but one file has refused to be deleted (it's a locked file left over from the old 3Com ISDN modem I had). When I try to empty the trash I get the following message:
"The operation cannot be completed because the item 'IQ320.BIN' is locked."
So, I look through the system help & find out that I either need to log in to OS X as the user who created the document ('root') or restart into OS 9 & unlock it from there.
Well, neither tactic has worked thus far. I restarted into OS 9 but found out that I can't access the file because it's in the trash (in OS X), which is an invisible directory (/Langly/.Trashes/102/). So then I restarted into OS X, logged in as root, but I still couldn't delete it. Desperate, I opened terminal, switched to root (su) found the files, but still can't delete the darned file. I tried rm, mv (thought if I moved it to somewhere that OS 9 could see it...), even chown, but each time I got "Operation not permitted." Any thoughts out there?

When I tried to delete in Finder, it moves it Trash, but emptying the Trash leaves it in there. I tried rm -fr * in Terminal and got a "file too long" error.

I have a file in the drop box of my laptop running OSX 10.5.8 I have copied it to the appropriate folder (Music) but it will not permit me to delete it from the drop box folder.
When I try to send it to the trash, it says it is locked. When I go to Get Info, it shows it locked but that area is grayed out. Even when I open the padlock with the password, it stays gray.
This isn't a major problem, but I would like to get rid of this file because it's annoying when I can't get a computer do do what I tell it. Every time I see it, it reminds me that the computer has gotten the best of me.

There is an avi file I found on my computer of an ex gf of mine. Now that I have a NEW gf, it would definitely not be a good idea to keep it on the computer. Problem is, I can't seem to delete it. I'm not super tech savvy, but I was able to delete quite a few other files with no issue, this is the only one that remains.I tried to hold option down while I emptied the trash, as I'd found that online. No go.

The current issue of MacWorld described an applet called 'What's Keeping Me?
Did you ever have the problem where you cant empty the Trash or eject a disk because something is preventing you? Usually the reason is because some application has a file open, and thus you cant get rid of the disk or trash the file. Thats why we made Whats Keeping Me! Whats Keeping Me will identify the application that is preventing you from accomplishing your task. You can then use What's Keeping Me to quit, relaunch, or kill the problem application so you can get on with your business.

There's a file on my desktop that was being copied from an external SD card but was interrupted. Now I cannot delete the freaking thing....what's going on? I've tried rebooting and then deleting, but that didn't work.
I get an error message that says "Some of the items you are moving are in use by another application. Moving the items can cause problems with the application using them. Are you sure you want to move these items?"
Clicking "Continue" doesn't actually delete the file....dragging and dropping the file into the trash also does nothing.

I tried downloading a remix of a song but can't remember if I fully downloaded the song. Anyways, I ended up trashing it but it hasn't gone away from my trashcan for weeks now.
It's a weird looking file name with weird characters in it and this concerns me if this could be a virus or not
If I try to hit "get info" it disappears from the trashcan, only to come back if I enter the trashcan again.

There is a certain file in my trash bin that won't delete, I don't believe it is locked or anything, it just says, "The operation cant be completed because the item sixtyforce is in use."
"sixtyforce" was this emulator that I downloaded, but it was the older version of it, so I wanted to delete it, but that message keeps coming up.

I had an image saved to my desktop, so in order to clean things up I created a new folder on my desktop and copied the image to that folder, however when I went to delete the image it asked for my password which I provided, I got the audio notification that it was deleted but the file remained on my desktop. I then tried to delete the folder and received the same password prompt, then the audio trash notification but the folder remained. How do I delete these?
