OS X :: Can Transfer File From The System To Allow Them To Be Deleted Like A Normal File

Jul 20, 2009

While copying files from my digital camera xD card onto my mini, the Card reader un-mounted itself and remounted its self several times, I have no idea why...Now I have a load of 0Kb files in the folder where I was copying to. I can delete these, but they come up with a "file in use" error message so I need to click for each file to be deleted... ~350 left I did try a restart thinking that may clear up any "pending" file transfers from the system to allow them to be deleted like a normal file

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Delete DS_Store File / File Keeps Popping Up On My Desktop

Nov 29, 2007

I am relatively new to the Mac. I have a Macbook Pro 2.2GHz. Today, a file keeps popping up on my desktop. It is named .DS_Store. The icon looks like a text document. I won't open it cuz I'm afraid of what it is, lol (Windows still clogging my brain). Anyway, I can drag it to the trash and delete the trash, but after a bit, it reappears.

Any idea how to get rid of it?

Software :: Cannot Delete .app File On A USB Drive

Aug 8, 2009

I have an .app file on a USB Drive that I can't seem to delete, I have looked at the Get Info window and everything to do with permissions is greyed out, although it does say I have read/write permissions in grey.

Anyway taking some advice from another forum I went into terminal and tried this code: Code: cd ~/.Trash/ sudo rm -rf [filename] but it just said after each file in the package that it was read only and didn't delete it. So how can I change the permissions?

I would like to add that I dont want to reformat the drive because I'm pretty sure there are some hidden files on there and the drive is actually a mobile broadband modem, but does have a little storage capacity on it. I dont want to run the risk of deleting files that might make the modem work.

OS X :: Can't Delete File On External Hard Drive

Dec 8, 2007

I've had some trouble deleting a file off my external hard drive connected to my iMac. The file shows up on the mac side but doesn't appear when I switch over to windows. I've tried to uncheck the permissions of the locked file but it will not unlock it.

When I try to send it to the trash, a dialogue appears saying that it is a locked file but do you want to delete it anyway. Nothing happens when I hit continue to delete the file. Anyone have any suggestions to get rid of this file?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Deleted Message In Outlook / H2 Delete Permanently From Computer

Apr 17, 2012

I have on tow differnt Mac' both running 10.8.6 and Office 2011.I get a message and I delete it from the inbox (POP accounts with my ISP, on my own domain), and next from the deleted items folder. so far so good, message (should be) gone forever. Now if I do a search (via the Mac find function) for the message it shows up as being in:/Users/e/ Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2011 Identities/Name of User/Data Records/Messages/ 0T/0B/0M/13K/x00_13558.olk14Message. The last item being the message.I can open it by double clicking and there it is in its full glory. If I do a search within Outlook it shows up but has no folder located to it, so I suppose it 'finds' it in the same folder where the Mac finds it.Using the find inside Outlook I can find them, delete them again and find them again, etc. Now, not only does this bloat the storage space needed (account now bloated to 1.5 Megabite), but it is also unpleasant (security) to know that they are still there. After all why otherwise delete anything?is this normal, and the second question is, how to set Outlook up that it removes these messages permanently? I had a thread about this in the MS Outlook forum but had no luck there.url...it be interesting to hear if any of you can recreate the problem, to exclude it being a unique problem on both my machines.

- Create new account in Outlook (same problem)

- Rebuild database

- Upgrade to latest Outlook version, followed by again

- Creating a new account in Outlook (same problem)

- Rebuilding the database

Software :: Can't Delete A Locked File - How To Delete

Sep 30, 2000

After I installed OS X I decided to go through my other partitions & do a little spring cleaning. In all, I trashed over 400MB of crap, but one file has refused to be deleted (it's a locked file left over from the old 3Com ISDN modem I had). When I try to empty the trash I get the following message:

"The operation cannot be completed because the item 'IQ320.BIN' is locked."

So, I look through the system help & find out that I either need to log in to OS X as the user who created the document ('root') or restart into OS 9 & unlock it from there.

Well, neither tactic has worked thus far. I restarted into OS 9 but found out that I can't access the file because it's in the trash (in OS X), which is an invisible directory (/Langly/.Trashes/102/). So then I restarted into OS X, logged in as root, but I still couldn't delete it. Desperate, I opened terminal, switched to root (su) found the files, but still can't delete the darned file. I tried rm, mv (thought if I moved it to somewhere that OS 9 could see it...), even chown, but each time I got "Operation not permitted." Any thoughts out there?

OS X ::restoring Deleted Sparsebundle File

Aug 6, 2010

My Mac was running out of space and my utility showed me that the .sparsebundle file (in my username folder but a greyed-out one with a "dot" in front of it) was gigantic in size (around 100 GB). So I deleted it.
I emptied the trash and everything appeared to be fine, until I logged out.

When I tried to log in with that user again it threw an error and I couldn't log in anymore. I then logged in with the Admin account (luckily I remembered) and that worked, but all my data from the previous user that iI was using appears to be gone!!

Is there anything I can do to get that data back? I'm very desperate, there are hundreds of very important files that are now gone.

MacBook Pro :: Recovering A Deleted File?

Dec 4, 2010

[URL]

however, I never did find that one file I was originally searching for!

The program I was using ( Data Rescue 3 ) renamed all my .jpegs in its search of my deleted files. So when I searched for the one I wanted not only did it not come up, but I was searching through 40,000+ jpegs one by one. Didn't get too far before I gave that up.

Is this normal for a data recovery program? Since I deleted them, it deleted the file structure for it so it renames them?

And has anyone successfully restored a deleted item? Just wanna save a few jpegs, that I was attached to.

I've never backed up my HD in the 4+ years of owing a mac so thats out of the option unfortunately. Looks like I know what I'll as for for christmas. An external.

I also have a iPhone and I and I want to know if everything on it will be deleted at the next sync (Contacts, songs, videos, Photos, Apps) if I can't get my files back because some of my song aren't backup so my iTunes won't be the same as the last time I sync my iPhone (My iPhone is Jailbroken.)

Intel Mac :: Erase A File That Says It Cannot Be Deleted?

May 29, 2012

I have a file that suddenly appeared and it says that it can not be deleted.  I dragged it to the trash and the exact message is:

The item "7702D020" can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted.

I tried unlocking it.  It does nothing when I try to find the info.  It says that it is an Excel file and I can not open it either.  I am afraid that it is a "nasty" type file.  Malware or something along those lines.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Strange File On Desktop Can't Be Deleted

Mar 18, 2012

I created a new project in Garageband called QE2.band on my desktop, I imported a midi file into the project, made some changes and saved it.This created two Icons on my desktop. Both with the same exact name of QE2.band. One had the standard document looking icon with the Guitar, and the second which looked like a minni screenshot of my GB tracks.I later moved the one with the "Tracks" icon to my music folder in the "Grarge Band" sub folder. I can still access this project just fine. But the Icon with the document looking Icon with the Guitar still appears on my desktop. If I double click on this desktop Icon, is is highligted with the selection rectangle, but does nothing. If I attempt to drag this Icon to the Trash in the Dock I get the message box saying "The item "QE2.band" can't be moved to the trash because it can't be deleted."If I RIGHT CLICK (CONTROL-CLICK) on this icon and select "Move to Trash", I get the same dialog box as above. If I open a Finder window in my desktop directory, the file does not appear. If I open up the "Terminal" app and cd to my desktop folder and execute the ls -la command, I do not see this file QE2.band.If I include the ls switches to how hidden (beginning with a ".") and including the -i to show the files id/inode number, including a null file spec, an "*" file spec or the actual file name "QE2.band" as the file spec, it still responds with file not found:ix:Desktop jeff$ pwd/Volumes/IX User/Users/jeff/Desktopix:Desktop jeff$ ls -la QE2.bandls: QE2.band: No such file or directory [code]
