Intel Mac :: Circle With Line At Startup - Works In Safe Mode
Jul 1, 2012
I've read the posts regarding this issue and have
1) Reset the PRAM
2) Successfully viewed the choice of both of my startup disks
3) Had success starting up in Safe Mode
When I restart after Safe Boot, I get the same no-go. What now?

I was troubleshooting an issue my brother was having with his Macbook over downloading files, installed Firefox for him, ran Apple updates and while the updates were installing the computer froze. He restarted it, and on startup he got a circle with a slash through it. I've been googling and checking forums and I tried booting into safe mode (Shift at startup, I believe?), and putting in the OS X disc that came with it and booting from that (C at startup?) but I get nothing. It just goes from the Apple with the loading circle, to the picture of the slash circle. I'm not really sure on the specs of the computer or the OS version, as I'm rarely on it.

I'm not sure what to do. I haven't tried resetting NVRAM/PRAM or the PMU/SMC, but are there other options I can try besides those?

Intel core 2 duo mac pro with two monitors, OSX 10.7+. Mouse only will reside in upper right of the monitor. Move the mouse and it immediatley returns to the the point of origin. Boot into safe mode and all is fine. First time this happended about one week ago, I disconnected both monitors after shutdown and unlpuged the power from the mac pro. let sit for a while and re-plugged all back in and all was fine on normal boot up.Â

I cannot seem to upload images onto the web from my macbook (10.6.2). It usually stops in the middle of the load, freezes with the rainbow wheel turning and either two things happen:
1. I have to force quite or
2. I get a messages stating a network error has occurred.
If they happen to work, I am getting lines on my pictures, almost like the whole thing didn't load or "skipped".
Here are a few examples:
I have tried everything. Cleaned my cache, run utilities, updated java, flash. I have tried every web browser out there. The computer did a clean sweep and told me everything is fine. Tried going from WiFi to ethernet, reset my browsers, nothing works except when I run the computer in Safe Mode. I don't get it. I have had a mac for over 10 years and I am stumped. I can run the computer in safe mode, but then a lot of my stuff doesn't work right.

I have a new IMac 24" and it has started to freeze and not respond. At one point it would only work in Safe mode. After working with Apple for several hours, we did a complete ease and reload of the OS. It would only install the first disk. We called Apple again and made an appointment at the local store. Brought it in and it booted right up. He even reinstalled the OS for us. We brought it back home, plugged everything in and it worked. It then started having the same issues after 4 days. I forced shut it down and unplugged everything. Plugged in the keyboard and mouse and everything works. The only think we have is a Lexmark printer - X5320. The strange thing is everything was working fine for 3 months and with my Mac Mini before that. Could it be a power issue? It is plugged into a APC UPS. All hardware tests pass.

My macbook (early 2008 model). Looks like my disk drive isn't working correctly; I put in a new hard drive. I went to reinstall Snow Leopard then upgrade to Lion. Ever since then my mac only seems to work in safe mode. I used my imac to load snow leopard (with firewire); and downloaded lion from app store. Is there a way to wipe clean and start over? There is nothing on the computer that I need. I keep all my important files on an external hard drive. My big concern is I don't know how to do it and second since I don't have a disk for lion will just going back to app store allow me to re-download or will I have to pay 30 bucks again.

We have an older model G5 Dual (no Intel Core) at the office that we tried to install CS3 on. I told them that first we would need to upgrade from 10.3.8 to 10.4.10, which they did, and then installed CS3. But they did it without running the disk utility repair permissions after the OS software installation, as I have routinely done with my Mac Mini at home, after the horror I experienced with the 10.4.9 upgrade. For a couple of days, the computer ran fine, but I noticed an increase in the fan spinning up yesterday afternoon, then quirky keyboard things -- like I'd select an item with point and click, and it would highlight everything else near it, I'd go to quit an application and it would ask if I wanted to quit all applications.
After backing up my current InDesign work files on a flash drive (but not the whole darn art folder), I rebooted and it came up in Safe Boot mode 6 times without holding any key down. Attempts to boot from disk have failed, even with holding down the "C" key. It's also not allowing us to type out full passwords at the log-in screen... you start typing and after you hit four digits, it clears, then only allows two digits. How we can:
1.) Force boot from disk, and,
2.) Hopefully fix with disk utility whatever wonkiness is occurring?

My best guess is the problem is not specifically hard-drive related since all the 'normal' fixes just won't work. The only way i've managed to keep the Macbook Pro on for longer than a minute is through target drive, where it seems to work just fine - i can access everything. To sum up everything:Â
1 - I tried resetting the PRAM
2 - I tried to go in to safe mode, it shut off before i could type the password
3 - I tried fsck -fy command from single user mode, sometimes i can get to actually typing it but mostly it shuts off before
4 - I tried to repair disk via target drive - success, no problems detected
5 - I reinstalled OS Mavericks.Â
The Macbook Pro previously had some problems with the power-button not working properly (a mac-cunning friend of mine had to open up the mac and start it by swiping to metal pins on a specific (battery/power?) part inside it.

Did a Shift - Command-V and the black screen showing all the startup steps appeared and it all looked good except: AFL Alart Sockwed cant update and INIT Reboot transmit failed. All else looks good. I have tried this 3 times and never go past that point. Then the screen turns off white like it does when it starts normally before the apple appears and the last time the screen went black.
I have tried starting with just the Shift Key and computer starts up but not in safe mode. I have tired starting with the OS X disk and the C key and it will not recognize the disk.I used the #1 disk since the instructions are printed on the disk. Did not work so I tried disk 2 and I get a menu to start the OS or tools. If I click on either one the screen goes white and stays that way.
computer starts fine and provides a login window, and then the desktop screen with screen saver pictures in perfect color. As it goes through starting programs it starts the same programs that is had open when the computer originally crashed. Even when I close them, before it locks up again, and I am forced to restart the same programs open up to the same place. Its like the computer is frozen in one location and will not go beyond that point. Eventually the screen turns white and sometimes black and sometimes gray.
Tech support thought it was the video card, put a new one in but did not fix the problem and then said it was not that but that it was the monitor. I said that did not make sense since the monitor and desktop icons and pictures are beautiful and clear. They then said it was the inverter board on the monitor and Apple only replace the whole thing. I purchased an inverter board and replace it. No change. The tech person said that the computer works find without the monitor connected - I will see if that is correct next. Isn't that a more systimatic testing procedure then trying parts to see if it works? Oh I did do the complete long hardware test. Took about an hour and it passed! Isn't this strange?

Is it possible to place a password when booting into safe mode on my Mac. Let me explain a little more. I know that the accounts are all their and you can place passwords on the user accounts, but here is my problem. I use k9 web filtering and when you boot up in safe mode it does not work and you have unfiltered access to the internet. Is it possible to only allow the system admin to boot into safe mode with a password so no one else would have access? Its a work around the filter I am trying to block.

a bit complicated.  I have a 3 year old iMac, Snow Leopard 10.5.2 on the dics, but I updated it so..a pretty receent version of Snow Leopard. I had had kernel panics before- it turned out to be a bad RAM chip, replaced it and it fixed the problem.Â
This time, I was hoping it was the same. I got a new RAM chip, swapped them out and ID'ed the bad one. Reseated the RAM. Probelm is, when I was trying to fix the problem, I had booted in Safe Mode. Now the iMac starts up normally- the chime, the Apple- AND the Safe Mode bar.
Which progresses for about 5 seconds before another Kernel panic descends. This happens whether the keyboard is connected or not. At this point the Safe Mode at startup bugs me more than the kernel panics! Sigh.Â
I wonder if there's any key combo on startup I could try to at least get out of Safe Mode before Kernel panic sets in. When my laptop has a kernel panic i can usually repair with Disk repair on CD.  I realize this sounds hopeless! And i need it repaired, but money is an issue.

I turned on my iMac (20in 2008 model) and after the apple logo appears, I get a gray screen that says "process 1 exec of sbin/launched failed". I'm pretty sure it's because my hard disk is full. I tried booting up in safe mode, but my wireless keyboard battery died. I put in new batteries, but I need to get to the desktop to reconnect the keyboard. I tried using a usb wired keyboard, but it doesn't power up until I'm on the desktop screen. I don't know what else to do. I need a keyboard to boot to safe mode, but I need to be fully booted to work the keyboard.

I'm getting the gray screen when I startup. I tried using the install disc to repair the utility, but it said it cannot be repaired. I had to use a plug-in mouse instead of my normal wireless mouse to get the startup disc out on a restart. I want to now startup in safe mode, but holding down shift during startup with my wireless keyboard doesn't work. Do I need to have a plug-in type keyboard for this function to work? Can you backup files using safemode?
