Aug 21, 2014I'm not sure what to do. I haven't tried resetting NVRAM/PRAM or the PMU/SMC, but are there other options I can try besides those?

May 7, 2012My macbook (early 2008 model). Looks like my disk drive isn't working correctly; I put in a new hard drive. I went to reinstall Snow Leopard then upgrade to Lion. Ever since then my mac only seems to work in safe mode. I used my imac to load snow leopard (with firewire); and downloaded lion from app store. Is there a way to wipe clean and start over? There is nothing on the computer that I need. I keep all my important files on an external hard drive. My big concern is I don't know how to do it and second since I don't have a disk for lion will just going back to app store allow me to re-download or will I have to pay 30 bucks again.

Mac Pro :: Mouse Only Works In Safe Mode?
May 14, 2012Intel core 2 duo mac pro with two monitors, OSX 10.7+. Mouse only will reside in upper right of the monitor. Move the mouse and it immediatley returns to the the point of origin. Boot into safe mode and all is fine. First time this happended about one week ago, I disconnected both monitors after shutdown and unlpuged the power from the mac pro. let sit for a while and re-plugged all back in and all was fine on normal boot up.Â

Dec 16, 2009I cannot seem to upload images onto the web from my macbook (10.6.2). It usually stops in the middle of the load, freezes with the rainbow wheel turning and either two things happen:
1. I have to force quite or
2. I get a messages stating a network error has occurred.
If they happen to work, I am getting lines on my pictures, almost like the whole thing didn't load or "skipped".
Here are a few examples:
I have tried everything. Cleaned my cache, run utilities, updated java, flash. I have tried every web browser out there. The computer did a clean sweep and told me everything is fine. Tried going from WiFi to ethernet, reset my browsers, nothing works except when I run the computer in Safe Mode. I don't get it. I have had a mac for over 10 years and I am stumped. I can run the computer in safe mode, but then a lot of my stuff doesn't work right.
IMac :: Started To Freeze - Only Works In Safe Mode
Jun 20, 2009I have a new IMac 24" and it has started to freeze and not respond. At one point it would only work in Safe mode. After working with Apple for several hours, we did a complete ease and reload of the OS. It would only install the first disk. We called Apple again and made an appointment at the local store. Brought it in and it booted right up. He even reinstalled the OS for us. We brought it back home, plugged everything in and it worked. It then started having the same issues after 4 days. I forced shut it down and unplugged everything. Plugged in the keyboard and mouse and everything works. The only think we have is a Lexmark printer - X5320. The strange thing is everything was working fine for 3 months and with my Mac Mini before that. Could it be a power issue? It is plugged into a APC UPS. All hardware tests pass.

MacBook Pro :: Airport Only Works When In Clamshell Mode Mode
Aug 28, 2010One day I was using my MBP open and external monitor hooked up. Everything was fine until the internet went down suddenly while I was using iChat.
My airport wouldn't see a network and after a couple restarts and a few resets my airport finally connected to my network. Once connected it would only issue a self-assigned IP, which obviously wouldn't work.
I was able to get around this by manually entering in the correct info but the speeds were low at best, usually pausing and stalling every minute.
After frustratingly trying get it to work, I entered clamshell mode because there was no reason at the time to have dual monitors. Once I did, viola, the airport kicked in and started working full force. It's been this way for about a month now.
My laptop is a MacBookPro5,1 with a 2.8 GHz processor and 4 GBs of RAM.
I've read that airports will have serious degradation issues if overheated and while that may be the issue, it doesn't seem to be the case.
I have smcFanControl installed and the MBP seems to be relatively cool to the touch. The fans never seem to be loudly kicking in and I have it raised on a fan powered cooling pad.
I do, though, use pretty much every port on my MBP. External monitor, speakers, both USBs, and firewire 800 are all in use, so maybe this is a resource issue or a very area specific heat issue.
OS X :: Won't Work With Kernal Panic / No Safe Mode And Target Disk Mode
Jul 6, 2010I have a 15" mbp with 10.6 Intel core duo, 4gb ram with a boot camp and ubuntu partition through parallels. The other day I was installing xcode from apple's website, which failed 3 times after downloading saying the package couldn't be expanded. I left my computer for a while and came back where i then had to log in again. it rejected my password numerous time (i'm positive it was correct). when i restarted my computer i got a kernal panic screen when the apple logo came up. it told me to restart the computer which i did. didn't work. i restarted with the osx cd to use the disk utility. when it checked the drive it found a bunch of errors, which i then tried to correct. it went for a couple minutes then told me they couldn't be fixed and i should try to back up my data and reinstall osx. i don't know how to back up my hard drive when i can't log into my account. i've tried to boot in target disk mode and copy some files that way, but the only disk the other computer sees is my windows partition- no mac partition.
i've also tried these, none of these have worked: restarting in safe mode resetting the ram and pram booting with different sticks of ram all result in a kernal panic.
my windows partition still works fine though (as much as i hate to say it) the only things I really care about on my computer are my files from school and my itunes library. is there any way i can get these files off my computer?
OS X Mavericks :: No Safe Boot Mode Nor Recovery Mode?
Jun 5, 2014My Mac Pro main boot drive us encrypted. I booted into recovery mode the other day & it wouldn't let me boot back o my main drive. Now upon start up I can't enter either recovery mode nor safe mode nor chose the main drive to boot from. I'm absolutely stymied in what to do.

May 15, 2012So here the whole story of what I think is relevant to this problem.I tried to install a small program that can read and write NFTS.After installing it needed to reboot my computer.During the reboot my computer shut down before the things were completely installed.My macbook Pro (mid 2009) rebooted and immideiatly stated that the time and date was set to jan 1st 2008.When I tried to adjest this in preferences > time and date the preferences pane did not respond after opening it.I tried to restart my computer again.But now it will only start in Safe mode.

When I try and start up holding shift to enter safe mode it will not start up either. I have tried turning It on and off many times. I am not sure what to do or what the problem might be. Jul 5, 2012MY MBP is giving me the "NOT" sign on start-up. This comes after initially displaying the Apple logo. This MBP had a new logic board installed by Apple just two weeks ago -- and I know I can take it back but I'd like to fix this myself. I put in a different hard drive after getting the MBP back. It has worked fine for several days. Don't know if these points are relevant, but:
1. First thing I noticed today is that neither of the USB ports would read a flash drive. The port would, however, work mouse and keyboard.
2. The initial non-boot episode took place when I had external hard drives daisy-chained in via Firewire. But, again, this had worked previously, as recent as this morning.This may be significant:
3. The last tasks performed on the MBP were -- for the first time -- to edit video in FCE, make DVD in iDVD, burn IMG file.
4.I have connect this MBP as a target FW drive to another MBP and run "disk verify" and "disk repair" in Disk Utility. It says the drive and permissions are okay.
5. I have booted to a copy of Disk Warrior (latest version, version 4, I believe) and rebuilt directories and files along with verify/repair permissions (everything DW will do). And when re-starting, it still won't boot.
6. When I boot off Snow Leopard DVD and run Disk Utility¦"verify disk" says "the volume appears to be ok¦.when I "repair disk" it reports "Volume repair complete." and "Updating boot partitions for the volume as required."
7. I'm able to boot in SAFE MODE, but when I try to restart in normal mode, it won't boot (so nothing was automatically fixed)What can I do in safe mode to address my problem?

Apr 29, 2012I am running OSX Lion latest version on my Macbook Pro 4,1 and can't get the thing to boot from any source. Always get's stuck at the grey screen with apple logo. Have tried all the following...
- Straight Boot (power on)
- Boot via Recovery HD (hold option on bootup then select)
- Boot via Safe Mode (Holding Shift on bootup)
- Boot via Safe Mode Verbose (Shift, Command, V)
- Boot via bootable Lion USB Key (Hold option, and choose the USB drive - not the same USB key works on my other macbook pro)
On every one (except verbose) it just get's stuck on the grey screen with spinning timer thingy. I have done PVRAM reset, SMC reset and have reseated the RAM and all to no avail. I'm pretty sure the problem was caused by removing battery at wrong time (device not responding after sleep mode started and I plugged in power - should have been more patient!)
I have a Time Machine backup but it's a bit older than I thought and very much want to get my newer photos off it before rebuilding - not that Time Machine would work in current state anyway. So what are my remaining options? Will I have to open it up and remove the HD as next step or is there anything else left to try? Can I remove the HD and connect it via a USB caddy to my existing Mac to recover info (hard drive spins and sounds ok to me)?

MacBook :: It Runs Slower On Safe Mode
Apr 29, 2012I heard someone talking about this "Safe Mode" and I thought it was an interesting feature in MacBooks and all I have to do was press Shift. I tried that and to my surprise, everything is slower. I tried to swith spaces and the wallpaper renders pixel per pixel on my screen. This never happened before. It's so slow! It has never been this slow before. I was curious if everything was really slower or it's just me so I fired up Geekbench. The results were staggering. 1280 points. A Power Mac G5 is faster than that. Even the Mac mini from 2007 is faster than that! This MacBook SHOULD be 3695! This is really amazing in a bad way. And other than that, I didn't really notice any difference at all from Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

Sep 3, 2010Today, my Macbook Pro 15" started to automatically boot up in Safe Boot / Safe Mode. So every time I boot up, I have to wait 5-10 minutes and stuff. It's not normal.
I tried: Restarting, Shutting down and booting.
Resetting PRAM, NVRAM
Verifying and repairing Hard Disk in Disk Utility (it fails). Tried in Mac OS and OS Installation Disk. etc. I got this computer 6 days ago, and there is already this problem. Is there a way without reinstalling the OS? I have Windows installed on it for gaming, but I don't see anything else that could be causing the problem.
