Intel Mac :: Gray Screen On Start Up - Backup Files Using Safe Mode?
Mar 8, 2012
I'm getting the gray screen when I startup. I tried using the install disc to repair the utility, but it said it cannot be repaired. I had to use a plug-in mouse instead of my normal wireless mouse to get the startup disc out on a restart. I want to now startup in safe mode, but holding down shift during startup with my wireless keyboard doesn't work. Do I need to have a plug-in type keyboard for this function to work? Can you backup files using safemode?

I woke up this morning and my iMac G5 (w/ Leopard) was frozen. I restarted it manually, but it would freeze on a blue screen without loading the OS. It can start up fine in safe mode, but that's it! I've tried repairing permissions and zapping the PRAM - any other ideas?
What can I do in Safe Mode that might fix my comp? I haven't recently installed any applications, and I have all "open at login" items turned off.

Did a Shift - Command-V and the black screen showing all the startup steps appeared and it all looked good except: AFL Alart Sockwed cant update and INIT Reboot transmit failed. All else looks good. I have tried this 3 times and never go past that point. Then the screen turns off white like it does when it starts normally before the apple appears and the last time the screen went black.
I have tried starting with just the Shift Key and computer starts up but not in safe mode. I have tired starting with the OS X disk and the C key and it will not recognize the disk.I used the #1 disk since the instructions are printed on the disk. Did not work so I tried disk 2 and I get a menu to start the OS or tools. If I click on either one the screen goes white and stays that way.
computer starts fine and provides a login window, and then the desktop screen with screen saver pictures in perfect color. As it goes through starting programs it starts the same programs that is had open when the computer originally crashed. Even when I close them, before it locks up again, and I am forced to restart the same programs open up to the same place. Its like the computer is frozen in one location and will not go beyond that point. Eventually the screen turns white and sometimes black and sometimes gray.
Tech support thought it was the video card, put a new one in but did not fix the problem and then said it was not that but that it was the monitor. I said that did not make sense since the monitor and desktop icons and pictures are beautiful and clear. They then said it was the inverter board on the monitor and Apple only replace the whole thing. I purchased an inverter board and replace it. No change. The tech person said that the computer works find without the monitor connected - I will see if that is correct next. Isn't that a more systimatic testing procedure then trying parts to see if it works? Oh I did do the complete long hardware test. Took about an hour and it passed! Isn't this strange?

My iMac G5 froze. I restarted it manually, but it kept freezing on a blue screen without loading the OS. It can start up fine in safe mode, but that's it! I've tried repairing permissions and zapping the PRAM.
Finally I resorted to an Archive & Install. That didn't work so I did a clean install but that didn't help either. After having done everything under the sun to it to get it to work, it will still only start up in safe mode. I even tried starting up off each of my two external fire wire drives with no luck (it froze on the fire wire screen with both drives - a Maxtor and a Western Digital). I am thinking that something on the mother board has died so that normal booting is prevented but safe mode booting is allowed.

So I have a MacBook Air, 2008 I believe, running Mavericks....Â
Today it decided to get stuck on the gray startup screen with the Apple and never ending rotating circle. I have sifted through TONS of articles and discussions and tried various things including:Â
- Holding Shift+cmd+V to do a safe boot while seeing the progress and a disk0s2: i/0 error is at the bottom.
- Holding down Cmd+R on start, then Reinstalling OS X Mavericks: would act like it was working, then would just revert back to main OS X Utilities window.
- Repair disk: cannot repair, instructs me to backup my files, reformat the disk and restore.Â
Well I have tried duplicating the main disk image with an external hard drive, and that won't work because it says the disk won't unmount.Â
I cannot find any way to backup my files before I resort to erasing the disk. The disk cannot be repaired, nor will it unmount. I unfortunately don't have an old backup to restore it to. Any way to backup my disk in its current state, then enabling me to erase and restore the disk? Or any other options that would work?Â

I have a 2009-2010 27inch iMac with OSX and software fully updated. My Mac started shutting down or going into deep sleep when left on.I've tried rebooting, power long hold, checking cords etc.I've attempted the 5 second hold after disconnecting the power cord, plugging back in and start no luck.I hear a very small click inside when I long hold, sometimes a very faint spinning sound but nothing else. The fan came on once after a start attempt but nothing else happened. I can't seem to safe start because the screen remains black.

Leopoard 10.5.2 - Quad Core Mac Pro.
I'm trying to start up in safe mode, per a recommendation from Objective Development, for a Little Snitch upgrade. I'm following these steps perfectly, and I see no indication that I'm running in safe mode. Of course, I've never seen safe mode, so I'm not sure what it looks like, but I'm guessing I ain't in it because I never see the "Safe boot at the login window".
Quote:
To start up into Safe Mode, do this:
1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
2. Press the power button.
3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key (the Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before).
4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and the spinning gear. Please be patient, booting in Safe Mode may take some while.
During the startup you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.

I have a mac book pro 17. I have 2 logins. on the main one it takes a long time and only the top bar appears. the normal icons dont appear. when i move the mouse i just get the spinning wheel and i stays like that. you can not operate anything. you have to hold power button to turn it off.Â
- if i try to log in in safe mode it does not owrk either.Â
- if i sign in as another user in safe boot, things seem to work. i suspect something is not sitting right in the main sign in.Â
I have checked the disc and it says it is fine. Â I have tried to back up but i does not seem to work, it just seems to hang too.Â

My macbook (early 2008 model). Looks like my disk drive isn't working correctly; I put in a new hard drive. I went to reinstall Snow Leopard then upgrade to Lion. Ever since then my mac only seems to work in safe mode. I used my imac to load snow leopard (with firewire); and downloaded lion from app store. Is there a way to wipe clean and start over? There is nothing on the computer that I need. I keep all my important files on an external hard drive. My big concern is I don't know how to do it and second since I don't have a disk for lion will just going back to app store allow me to re-download or will I have to pay 30 bucks again.

I've been trying to partition my drives and install Windows on my late 2012 imac. I last adjusted my partitions using disk utility and now receive the prohibitory sign on start-up and cannot boot up in safe mode; pram reset; type commands in single user mode. Running on Mavericks OS.

I have an extremely slow Time Machine backup. I've gone through the motions and tried to resolve the issue by doing the suggested restart in Safe Mode.I don't use Norton Symantec but I didn't the Norton Remove script through the Console already. I don't run any anti-virus software. This started when I was backing up to at Time Capsule. I backed up to the TC for years before this started. I then moved to backing up (started fresh) to a external HD connected via USB. I have a 2010 Mac Mini with OS X 10.9 (Latest Version)

Ok... So, I have an extremely slow Time Machine backup. Many people do. I've gone through the motions and tried to resolve the issue by doing the suggested restart in Safe Mode. I even followed some of the other tips that are on this string: slow time machine backupÂ

If I try to mount almost any DMG file I just get an error message saying that there is no mountable file system. I know that these are not corrupt dmg files because these are ones that I have mounted before, it affects almost every single one and more importantly if I reboot in Safe Mode every single one mounts perfectly.Â
Clearly then something is running in normal mode that is preventing dmg's from mounting but I don't know how to find out what. I went to System Properties>User & Groups>Login Items and removed everything that was there but that was just iTunes Helper and something called WDC something or other which was unchecked anyway and is just a utility that controls my external hard drives. With everything removed and rebooted still DMG files won't mount.Â
Safe Mode = DMG's mount
Normal Mode = DMG's won't mount.Â
how I can find out what is causing this problem and/or how to fix it as it's annoying as **** and preventing me from easily updating software.

Tried everything from archive and install (wouldn't read disk2 until the 9th try and ended up with 9 system folders). Then tried an Erase and Install. Still it refuses to boot. Get's hung up at the blue screen. Will only boot in safe mode. Now for the last few days even the startup chime is missing. Tried PRAM and NVRAM resets. no help. Won't boot from DiskWarrior boot disk either. Just hangs
