Power Mac G5 :: Startup Only In Safe Boot Mode

Oct 11, 2007

We have an older model G5 Dual (no Intel Core) at the office that we tried to install CS3 on. I told them that first we would need to upgrade from 10.3.8 to 10.4.10, which they did, and then installed CS3. But they did it without running the disk utility repair permissions after the OS software installation, as I have routinely done with my Mac Mini at home, after the horror I experienced with the 10.4.9 upgrade. For a couple of days, the computer ran fine, but I noticed an increase in the fan spinning up yesterday afternoon, then quirky keyboard things -- like I'd select an item with point and click, and it would highlight everything else near it, I'd go to quit an application and it would ask if I wanted to quit all applications.

After backing up my current InDesign work files on a flash drive (but not the whole darn art folder), I rebooted and it came up in Safe Boot mode 6 times without holding any key down. Attempts to boot from disk have failed, even with holding down the "C" key. It's also not allowing us to type out full passwords at the log-in screen... you start typing and after you hit four digits, it clears, then only allows two digits. How we can:
1.) Force boot from disk, and,
2.) Hopefully fix with disk utility whatever wonkiness is occurring?

MacBook :: Circle With Slash At Startup - Cannot Boot In Safe Mode

Feb 25, 2010

I was troubleshooting an issue my brother was having with his Macbook over downloading files, installed Firefox for him, ran Apple updates and while the updates were installing the computer froze. He restarted it, and on startup he got a circle with a slash through it. I've been googling and checking forums and I tried booting into safe mode (Shift at startup, I believe?), and putting in the OS X disc that came with it and booting from that (C at startup?) but I get nothing. It just goes from the Apple with the loading circle, to the picture of the slash circle. I'm not really sure on the specs of the computer or the OS version, as I'm rarely on it.

MacBook :: Shuts Off During Startup - Can't Get Through Safe / Single User Mode

Aug 31, 2014

My best guess is the problem is not specifically hard-drive related since all the 'normal' fixes just won't work. The only way i've managed to keep the Macbook Pro on for longer than a minute is through target drive, where it seems to work just fine - i can access everything. To sum up everything:

1 - I tried resetting the PRAM

2 - I tried to go in to safe mode, it shut off before i could type the password

3 - I tried fsck -fy command from single user mode, sometimes i can get to actually typing it but mostly it shuts off before

4 - I tried to repair disk via target drive - success, no problems detected

5 - I reinstalled OS Mavericks.

The Macbook Pro previously had some problems with the power-button not working properly (a mac-cunning friend of mine had to open up the mac and start it by swiping to metal pins on a specific (battery/power?) part inside it.

OS X :: Unable To Boot Into Safe Mode Or Use Install DVD

May 11, 2010

I am using a Late 2009 Mac Mini. This afternoon I did a software update, it was 4 programs that were updated. I didn't take a look at what was updated, which was a mistake, I know. But anyways, they installed fine, and the Mac rebooted, it got to just before the user select/login screen and hanged there. I was able to move the mouse around, but nothing else, and after a long period of time, I powered off my Mac, and now it is hanging at the Apple logo.

I tried booting into Safe Mode, and the grey progress bar would appear but and get half way through and then disappear. Next I tried inserting the Install DVD, hold down C while it was booting up but that wouldn't do anything.

Mac Mini :: Slow Bootup With Blue Screen - Able To Enter Password In Safe Mode

Nov 28, 2009

I've been using my Intel Mac-Mini without a hitch for three years now. Previously it had been plugged into a Samsung 32" LCD TV, but I've just swapped it over for a 1080p Panasonic 37".

Now when I turn on the mac it takes a long time to boot up and then eventually settles on a blue screen. The mouse pointer is visible but nothing else. I've tried using a dvi to vga adaptor and an HDMI to vga cable and the same thing happens.I tried a 15" Samsung monitor and the same thing happens.

If I boot in 'safe' mode it allows me to type in my password but when I try to log in it fades to blue and then returns to the log in page.

Software :: Unable To Connect To Internet In Safe Mode / Little Rainbow Pinwheel Thing That Freezes Up

Apr 17, 2010

Note: I've tried safe mode, and I don't have this problem there. But when I'm in safe mode, I can't get to the internet, so it's useless.I have an ibook g3. I don't know the exact kind, but it has dual usb ports and a translucent keyboard.

I know my g3 is old, but it works just fine. I can start up, log in, and my desktop will come up just fine. I can run any of the applications I have installed. I can get on the internet. I can do pretty much anything... for ten minutes.

After being on my g3 for a little while, it starts to go slower and slower and slower until I get the little rainbow pinwheel thing and it freezes up. Then I have to turn it off by force. BTW, when all of this starts, it doesn't really heat up or make any odd noises.

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Connect To Internet Via Ethernet Or Wi-fi / Internet Connects In Safe-mode

Jan 1, 2010

I'm running OSX 10.5.8 on a Macbook Pro, and today I've been unable to connect to the internet via ethernet or wi-fi, unless I'm in safe mode. Then everything seems to work as it should, which makes me believe that this is a software issue rather than a hardware problem. I've tried making a new account with administrator priveleges, but that doesn't solve my issue. Does anyone have any advice on how I can connect to the internet under my normal user account, rather than in safe mode? I should note that I won't be able to get my hands on my repair CD or perform a clean install of OSX because that stuff is at home, and I'm in college. Also, I'm at a university and don't have a router. I just use the campus-wide wi-fi. Finally, my roommate has no problem accessing the internet in our room via ethernet or wi-fi, but I do. Thanks for the help everyone.

OS X :: Won't Work With Kernal Panic / No Safe Mode And Target Disk Mode

Jul 6, 2010

I have a 15" mbp with 10.6 Intel core duo, 4gb ram with a boot camp and ubuntu partition through parallels. The other day I was installing xcode from apple's website, which failed 3 times after downloading saying the package couldn't be expanded. I left my computer for a while and came back where i then had to log in again. it rejected my password numerous time (i'm positive it was correct). when i restarted my computer i got a kernal panic screen when the apple logo came up. it told me to restart the computer which i did. didn't work. i restarted with the osx cd to use the disk utility. when it checked the drive it found a bunch of errors, which i then tried to correct. it went for a couple minutes then told me they couldn't be fixed and i should try to back up my data and reinstall osx. i don't know how to back up my hard drive when i can't log into my account. i've tried to boot in target disk mode and copy some files that way, but the only disk the other computer sees is my windows partition- no mac partition.

i've also tried these, none of these have worked: restarting in safe mode resetting the ram and pram booting with different sticks of ram all result in a kernal panic.

my windows partition still works fine though (as much as i hate to say it) the only things I really care about on my computer are my files from school and my itunes library. is there any way i can get these files off my computer?

OS X :: Can't Boot In Safe Mode?

May 17, 2010

I have a 08 MacBook pro (not unibody) and it is now not booting up. I recently installed a Hitachi 500gb hard drive on the computer and restored through time machine and it worked fine for about 2 weeks and now wont boot and I'm wondering if its probably the hard drive. When I click power the light on the front of the computer will come on and it will sound like it is about to boot then a clicking noise seems to come from the computer and it instantly shuts off. I have gotten it to turn on a couple times since it happened by slamming the comp on the bed then for some reason it will work but as soon as I shut it, it wont turnback on. Any ideas?

Oh and PS the screen never comes on and can't boot in safe mode.

OS X :: Won't Work To Use Safe Mode For Maintenance

Oct 8, 2010

I have a 21.5 inch iMac and am running Snow Leopard. I am familiar with Safe Mode and I understand that it does a disk check and repair and also does some cache clearing during a startup process that allows the user to startup into a system where certain kernel extensions, etc, are disabled to allow for trouble shooting. Then the user can do a restart and end up back in normal mode.

My question is whether starting up into Safe Mode could prove beneficial as some sort of routine maintenance?

OS X :: Won't Work With Start Up In Safe Mode

Feb 12, 2008

Leopoard 10.5.2 - Quad Core Mac Pro.

I'm trying to start up in safe mode, per a recommendation from Objective Development, for a Little Snitch upgrade. I'm following these steps perfectly, and I see no indication that I'm running in safe mode. Of course, I've never seen safe mode, so I'm not sure what it looks like, but I'm guessing I ain't in it because I never see the "Safe boot at the login window".

Quote:

To start up into Safe Mode, do this:

1. Be sure the computer is shut down.

2. Press the power button.

3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key (the Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before).

4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and the spinning gear. Please be patient, booting in Safe Mode may take some while.

During the startup you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.

OS X :: Won't Work With Starting In Safe Mode

Jun 11, 2008

I started (because I wanted to) my MBA into safe mode. Just hadn't tried it before. It took, what seemed, an inordinate amount of time to boot.

I pressed the shift ket at the BONG and released at the spinning gear screen. Is this normal? Does OS X perform disc read/write, verification, cache handling, etc. that causes the lengthy boot.

OS X :: Applications Only Launch In Safe Mode

I've been running OSX 10.6.2 without any problem for the last six months until today....Now when I try to run applications (other than Safari which is working slow, but otherwise ok) the application icon will appear in the dock for 2-3 seconds and then disappears without opening the program. I'm not aware that I've added or changed anything that might have triggered this problem. I can however open the applications without any problem if I boot into safe mode. I've tried more than one user profile, disk utilities, resetting PRAM, running Onyx maintenance utilities etc.

Mac Pro :: Won't Work / G4 500 Starts In Safe Mode

Jul 18, 2010

I have a G4 533 and up till 3 weeks ago it worked wonderful for a mail server. I have 1.5gb and a 300gb hard drive which has been working wonderful with no conflicts. When restarting after a software update, I noticed on the start up screen that it restarted in "safe mode". I checked for a stuck shift key and of course they were just fine. I thought it might be a heat problem because the next day I started it back up and it started normally so I ran disk utility to make sure. The next time I started, no matter if it was cool or warm, it went straight to "safe mode" just for grins, I backed up all my information onto an external drive and attempted to re-install the 10.4 disk and it went straight to the black "kernel panic" screen. "OK" I said, so I took out the 300gb hard drive all together, installed a freshly "zeroed out" 120gb hard drive that I had and then tried to start it up and it went straight back to the "kernel panic" screen. Next, I not only unplugged the cord but also took out the battery which only then would it start up alright. So now that is the only way that I can get the machine to start up in anything other than "safe mode". At this point, it is a pain in the ass but so far it is working. Does anyone have any idea what I have overlooked or what is wrong? I would really like to use the box but it is just a pain in the a$$ to do this.
