I need to block outgoing traffic on specific ports. Is there anything default in OS X to do this? If not, what application could I use? I'd prefer to use the OS, if it has an ability to do this.
View 4 RepliesTurns out that on days when I'm not at work, a co-worker is using my computer to access two specific porn sites. I would just like to block those sites to see if he gets the hint before reporting the problem. I can't just log the computer off when I'm not around.
**Bonus Challenge: Can I redirect him to, say, a page on my own domain that will let him know that he is busted?

Browser: Safari
Connection: DSL
Network: Hard-wired ethernet, connected to network printer but not to any other computers on the network.
Instead of making a never ending list of websites to block, I'd rather just enable a few websites and block everything else, is that possible?

I'm using Tunnelblick to a OVPN server. I noticed Tunnelblick doesn't have an option to "send all traffic over VPN" like say Viscosity does, I would use Viscosity but I'm on a 64 bit kernel and Viscosity has no support for that, I know there are several guides but they don't work. So simply, how do I know if Tunnelblick is sending all traffic over VPN or not?

We already had a block set up with openDNS to effectively block all web sites through our router (apple time capsule) but that doesn't do anything to block p2p file sharing and our guest has figured this out. I discovered this because they are not too computer literate and all of their downloads from limewire and frostwire ended up showing up in their itunes shared library.
I am looking for some advice from some pro network admins / elite type users.
I have some specific problems I am trying to address and could use a pointer in the right direction in terms of what software to get.
a) I'm looking for any software suite / program, MAC or PC, which can enable me to detect TRAFFIC on MY OWN network, and possibly correlate that traffic with known port numbers to create a graph / picture / etc of WHAT KIND of traffic a specific IP address / interface is transacting.
The purpose of this is to attempt to pinpoint how much torrenting / limewire / etc is going on on my network, and from what computers.
b) Any advice on any wireless router brand / model that enables IP / computer based bandwidth throttling such that I can clamp down on people who leech and drive my ping times through the roof.
This is a home network, college residence with approx 10 different users on the network. I have full control over the cable modem and the router. It is a consumer model (netgear) with limited configuration options, but very good wireless reception.
Love it or hate it, I couldn't stand the all-gray iTunes and the vertical traffic lights. So I dropped a little script in the terminal and installed a modification to bring colour back to my icons. Now that iTunes 10.1 is out, does anyone have any experience with it breaking such modifications? I can't quite remember what it was I changed or I would experiment for myself. Unfortunately I'm tech savvy enough for basic trouble shooting and following explicit directions but not enough to know all the components of iTunes. I think I replaced a resource file of some kind.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm new mac fan who has bought a macbook pro and thrown BG & MS out of my life, almost. The transition has been a little tough. I am finding some Mac things so easy. And other so hard. Apple Mail is giving me fits. In outlook express, I have 3 email accounts for various levels of privacy. All using verizon's outgoing mail server to send email. So, same username, pw & settings & outgoing Pop are the same on all 3 accounts. No problem in Outlook Express.
Mail says you cannot have the same username & pw& pop in 2 separate accounts whether it is outgoing or incoming pops/servers. On 2 accounts I have started using their own pop to send mail out. I still cannot get 1 account to email out. For 2 accounts I use onlymyemail to filter spam and then I download it from their incoming pop. So, these 2 accounts must have the same username and password and pop to download the filtered email. It seems like this whole thing is reversed. This should be a MS problem, and Mail should allow the same usname & pw on all accounts.
My prob is that I have directed my gmail and my office mail address both to my mac mail. I get all the messages and my office account exists as well, but when I respond to a mail that came into my office account and I reply to it, my gmail address is seen as a sender address, not my office one. What can I do? I have already put my office email in the outgoing add. and the smtp field.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAbout an hour ago (have been trying to sort it since) I was in the middle of sending a couple of e-mails (been emailing a friend for about an hour, so was a sudden occurrence). And the messages don't send, wait in the outbox and an error message pops up JUST on my sky e-mail account, who are my ISP providers. They're claiming the port number and the outgoing mail server are incorrect/causing the error yet I have no touched the setting since the day I set the account up about 5months ago. The first line of the error says 'there may be a problem with the mail server or network' and then it goes on to mention the outgoing mail server and the port number (which is 995).

Entourage 12.2.0 was working fine on my OSX 10.6.2. I believe after upgraded Entourage to version 12.2.3, all my outgoing mail were not updated to exchanges server.
All mail reaches it intended recipients and a copy keep in local folder. other function like calender and contact are able to sync with exchange without problem.
I need a plug-in/add-on/application that will block certain websites I want at certain times. For example, block Youtube and Facebook from 4-6PM. Preferably these settings would be difficult or impossible to change once in place, haha. I want to be strict and not let myself procrastinate during the upcoming school year and I think this is the only way to actually do it.

I installed the add-on adblock pro, and it is without a doubt 100% ineffective; I view web pages and when I place the mouse on top of the icon it tells me it is active, however below it notifies me that it has blocked 0 out of 150 or however blockable items on the given page. I mean absolutely nothing is prevented, I found a similar add on for safari, and the same results, nothing blocked. I must be doing something completely wrong, or something so blatantly obvious, but I really am clueless.

View 1 Replies View Related'lo i use a iMac mid '09 @ work we have access to multiple connections Ethernet and Airport. Sadly the Ethernet is fire-walled and doesn't allow specific connections through; lucky though the airport is not.
The thing that is most frustrating is our system critical app HAS to run through the Ethernet to function under the fire-walled connection; but being on mac it's a friggin task to switch between the two because you have to go into network and set the service order each time to flip between them. I really need away that i can assign a specific application to use a specific connection (airport) that is active and connected while keeping the service order the same as to not mess with the system critical App that has to run through the enet. Is there any process or outside app that i could use to force other apps to use the airport connection while still leaving the Crit app using the enet?
I've been able to set the service order over to airport launch the app i want to use it and then switch back over to enet for the crit app but it seemed to work fine but that's a lot of Jank to pull each time i want to use an outside app. also i didn't really do it for any length of time so i don't know if that process would even hold up over time or flip back over to the opposite connection when it needed a fresh link

In the past couple days, I've all-of-a-sudden noticed that I'm receiving incoming network traffic; sometimes it's 300-400kbps, sometimes it's almost 1Mbps. It'll occasionally stop for a period of a few seconds to a minute, then pick up again. Disconnecting the computer from the network will stop it (obv), but it picks right up immediately upon reconnecting.
No programs are running that would seem to cause this behavior. Nothing is being downloaded (I mostly do that on a separate machine anyways) and nothing is running when this begins that would lean me towards a problem. Switching from a wired connection to a wireless connection does stop the download completely, which lends me to think that this is most likely an attack on that IP, though I can't find a way to be sure or to even look further on that idea.
What is the process used to direct certain IP addresses or a range of IP addresses to the second ethernet connection on a Mac Pro? I have a set of Mac Pros that use the first connection for internet access and corporate server connections using Samba. But the second ethernet connection is used for a lan between the Mac Pros and printers. It currently works but it take a bit for the "connect to servers" dialog to connect to a Mac Pro on the lan because I think it is searching Connection 1 first which has hundreds of Windows servers attached to it. And it takes several minutes to connect if our service has an interruption on Connection 1. All of the Mac Pros and printers are set up to use a manual IP address (192.168...) The Mac Pro workstations use Snow Leopard and we have a Mac Pro Server running Lion Server that we use to conntrol a network RAID.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI tried putting together an iMovie project last night, but the main VOB files that I got the movie clips from were huge. The DVD I'm working with has chapters that last five minutes. I have MacTheRipper and I've tried Handbrake, but from what I can see, I can only go as small as ripping chapters from the DVD. I don't want something that large piling up on my computer when I'm only using tiny clips. (Perhaps even I did my iMovie project wrong? I got a terrible surprise this morning when, after deleting the large movie files, my iMovie project no longer worked.) Is there a program that lets me rip from - say 7:13 to 8:05? Just that clip - not a chapter or the whole thing?
