OS X :: Internet Only Works In Specific Applications?
Jan 28, 2009
i noticed that my internet, while working just fine in firefox, refuses to work in mail or ichat. Also, i have only found one page that refuses to load (the most important of course) which is [URL]. Has anyone had this problem before?
my girlfriend and I live in different cities and our main way of communication is using iChats Video Chat. Before I moved I was on Comcast cable internet and used a Microsoft base station as my wifi router. We never had a problem with connecting to our video chats. She is on Optimum optonline cable internet with a netgear router. Now I have moved in to another place with a friend and we just got Embarq DSL, I am using their 660R router into an older linksys router my roommate had. Now we can never connect to video chat. We alway get the communication error when we try. I even tried hooking my base station up but for some reason I see the wifi but the internet never works for me then. If anyone has any insight on what I can maybe do would be great. I have tried apples test AIM names appleu3test01, 02 and 03. They work for me and I get mac's commercial streaming to me.
I can't connect to the internet from 8 pm to 8 am because my parens are turning my internet off. No i'm not a little kid or anything, besides nobody would give a little kid a laptop. i have an v10.5.7 2 Ghz intel core 2 duo macbook. I don't know how my parents are automatically turning off the internet at exactly 8 pm then turning it on at 8 am. And it is just my laptop because my brother can connect to the same network after 8. How is she doing this and is there a way to connect? also, if i restore my laptop to factory settings, would it change the IP address?
can someone tell me a way to monitor ALL my internet usage per/month or spesific dates. I have looked at some widgets, but none of them do a good job. Please keep in mind that I connect via wireless, USB based 3G modem and ethernet. But I also browse/copy/move files on my local network. So I need true internet usage not including network traffic.
Has anyone had this issue? Install windows xp on boot camp SP2 everything installs smoothly but I cannot connect wirelessley to the internet. The internet works via OSX but not the other way around. I always get the following error when trying to connect:
"Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again."
I've tried repairing, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, reinstalling windows, restarting, nothing works. I'm not real good at figuring out IP and such so I have no other idea what to do.
Wifi works but no connection to Internet. 2nd MacBook Pro on same wifi network works (but is using Snow Leopard while I am using lion 10.7.4). iPad works.
This is an odd one, My imac can't seem to recognize my airport card. The airport utility can't recognize any device. The network diagnostics recognize the internet with the green lights but the airport lights are red... My browsers are connecting to the internet and I am receiving email. The airport icon in the menu is blank and when I open the menu it says "Airport:Not configured"
I just got the new macbook, with snow leopord, and is running on 10.6.2. My internet is really slow when I connect it to my linksys router. It is a wrt54g router. And I am using a WPA2 password. The internet works fine with the three other laptops in my house. But is slow when I connect with wireless to the router. But when I connect to the router with a ethernet cable it works really fast.
My macbook wont load any web pages. It is connected to my wifi network and it says my Internet connection is good under my network settings. All my other devices on the network have no issues (ipad2, 2-iPhone 4's and 2-PS3s). Also when I connect my MacBook to my router with an Ethernet cable it loads any and all web pages instantly. I also tried installing Firefox thinking it may have been an issue with safari. No luck there. The issue was intermittent at first and would require I restart my computer/router and then issue would be corrected. Now the internet wont load any pages at all. I also tried zapping the PRAM, flushing the DNS cache, removing files from the system config folder under Library/Preferences/system configuration and a few other things I can't exactly remember. My MacBook is up to date, my routers firmware is up to date. I even tried tethering my MacBook to my iPhone via wireless Internet and still could not load any websites.

Got a Mac OS X Version 10.7.4 last week and first off it was fine the Internet connected perfectly and was the fastest connection I've seen. But this morning I came down and it connected for 5 minutes and then although it appeared to be working (The wifi bars were full) the internet wouldn't search for any sites. All the while my iPod and laptop still connected. I did a clean-up of the Mac but that didn't make a difference. It seems to be able to connect for that first 5 minutes every time I restart the computer, but you can't do anything in 5 minutes. I need to correct this, do you have any idea how?

Just got a new iMac and when I use safari, my connection is VERY slow. I have my old imac and other NB's running on the same home network and they work very fast and work fine. my new imac seems to show the address it's going to but sits there for literally min's before it connects or if it connects.

I've tried three different browsers (safari, firefox, chrome). Here is a copy-paste of the ping to facebook.
Ping has started Ping: cannot resolve [URL]: Unknown host
I've got no network software running in the background (other than dropbox), and I don't think I've set up a custom DNS. Not really sure how to check what it is. This is an on and off thing, sometimes facebook loads, sometimes it doesn't. Using computers connected to the same WiFi, I can freely access Facebook with no issues.
I recently completely a wire pull from the network hub (Dell Power Connect?) in the office of a church, to a computer in a different room of the church. I plugged in the cat5e cable to the computer, it connects to the network, computers on the network can access it's public folders and remote access it, but the computer cannot browse the internet using the built-in ethernet plug. The wireless-internet on the computer allows me to navigate the internet just fine.
With the Airport turned off, and the ethernet plugged in, I can ping [URL] with 0% packet loss, but when I try to connect to google on Safari or Firefox it says that Safari/Firefox cannot connect to the server.
I bought a new iMac and it connected to AirPort Base Station, internet works fine on it. However, when I connect my MacBook to the wireless network, it doesn't let me go on the internet. I checked the status of the router through AirPort Utility. (Status: Conflicting DHCP Range) I don't know how to fix this.
My wi fi iPad works fine on wireless home network but the Mac will not connect to internet even through airport diagnostics shows connectivity ok, how can I resolve?
'lo i use a iMac mid '09 @ work we have access to multiple connections Ethernet and Airport. Sadly the Ethernet is fire-walled and doesn't allow specific connections through; lucky though the airport is not. The thing that is most frustrating is our system critical app HAS to run through the Ethernet to function under the fire-walled connection; but being on mac it's a friggin task to switch between the two because you have to go into network and set the service order each time to flip between them. I really need away that i can assign a specific application to use a specific connection (airport) that is active and connected while keeping the service order the same as to not mess with the system critical App that has to run through the enet. Is there any process or outside app that i could use to force other apps to use the airport connection while still leaving the Crit app using the enet?
I've been able to set the service order over to airport launch the app i want to use it and then switch back over to enet for the crit app but it seemed to work fine but that's a lot of Jank to pull each time i want to use an outside app. also i didn't really do it for any length of time so i don't know if that process would even hold up over time or flip back over to the opposite connection when it needed a fresh link
I tried putting together an iMovie project last night, but the main VOB files that I got the movie clips from were huge. The DVD I'm working with has chapters that last five minutes. I have MacTheRipper and I've tried Handbrake, but from what I can see, I can only go as small as ripping chapters from the DVD. I don't want something that large piling up on my computer when I'm only using tiny clips. (Perhaps even I did my iMovie project wrong? I got a terrible surprise this morning when, after deleting the large movie files, my iMovie project no longer worked.) Is there a program that lets me rip from - say 7:13 to 8:05? Just that clip - not a chapter or the whole thing?
I have my firewall set to "allow specific services and applications."
I noticed today that DashboardClient, System Preferences, and a program called "ScreenSaverEngine." Are all set to allow..
Typically i'd just want itunes so I can use simplify media, and safari/firefox because i think it has to be enabled.
What are the parameters for allowing a program incoming access in general - i seem to get asked it now that I have this option checked and wanted to make sure? I find it odd that i have some system utilities on my list set to allow - is it just me?
I've used migration assistance before to transfer things in bulk, like everything from my old macbook to my new macbook... but I was wondering if I can transfer small, specific apps like my itunes library and my iphoto collection from my macbook to my new imac. does migration assistance give you an option like that when you use the ethernet chord?
When I'm in printing and want to print a specific page after viewing in Preview, is there a way to select from within Preview that certain page, or range of pages to print?
There are many video converters on mac but I 've not found something to suit my needs.
Videomonkey(buggy?), roadmovie, mpeg streamclip etc.
Sometimes we do not want just a beautiful interface but also get the job done the way we want it.
So this is what I want:
- specify the exact video format I want my video to be converted. Not just a selection 'for ipod, for apple tv' and so on. So what? Am I supposed to make several conversions in order to see what each so labeled options mean in reality? I try to export to .mp4 and this should be a straightforward process.
- most important: limit output filesize. Specify the desirable filesize and converter should output a file that has this filesize. If anyone has seen convertxtodvd in windows, he should understand what I mean.
For some reason my mac always resets my 'open with' preferences if I restart my computer.
So for instance, even if I go through the usual route of selecting a program as the default player (select file/get info/open with/change all), as soon as I restart my mac it will always revert back to the default players and not the newly selected one.
Is there a work around? A setting in OSX which im missing? Or perhaps a third party app which can handle this?
