OS X :: Any Way To Block Application From Connecting To Internet?
May 7, 2009Is there a way to prevent a single application from ever connecting to the internet? I have a program that always tries to update itself on startup, but the update breaks it. The preference to never check for updates isn't saved between each quit, and if it detects an update it will start downloading automatically, without my consent.
I've tried using the Security section in SysPrefs to block incoming connections, but that just leaves it stuck at 0% downloaded, instead of stopping the entire process. I'm stuck with disabling Airport, starting the application and getting past the main menu and then re-enabling Airport, which is starting to become a pain. I'll use Little Snitch if necessary, but I only need to block the one application. If there's some kind of Terminal command or .plist file I could edit instead of spending $30 on Little Snitch, I'd like to take that route.

OS X :: Possible To Block Wireless Internet Users?
Nov 19, 2009I need some info if this is possible, is there any means software wise other then changing the WEP password on my wireless modem to block someone from using it? This person of interest is using a windows laptop with xp and has some kinda of WEP crack program that can find out the password. So hence changing the password is a lose, and I'm not to sure if there are similar programs to WAP based (if not I go and buy an apple airbase with WAP2 password). I was thinking of some means of knowing the I.P. number of the laptop and preventing the modem from having it connect to it.

For the last two days, Safari, itunes and Google Earth say they cant open the page because it could not connect to the server .I have run the disk utility and ONYX and have not been able to restore the internet access to these apps.The problem appeared after starting up the computer the next day after successfully using Safari and itunes the previous day.

May 29, 2012currently I connect to the internet by doing this: Go to System Preferences / Network. Then I select my internet provider name on the left pane and finally click on the Connect button. That's all. This internet profile has a PPoE service name, an account name and a password. My internet connection uses a cable DLink router (it's not wireless).
Question:
1) Does the password I mentioned above mean that my neighbors can't access my internet, or are they able to do that and, in this case, I need to set another password somewhere else?
2) If I need another password, how and where do I set it,

Jun 29, 2009I remember seeing keyboard shortcuts such as Cmd-F2 that would allow access of the Application Menu. However, this does not work for me.
I have set the fn key to not be needed for function key access. That is, if I press f10, it acts as f10 rather than "mute."

Apr 19, 2012I'm creating an AppleScript application bundle that relies on a separate application. I want to add this application to my bundle and then call it via "tell application xyz ... end tell"
So far I have been unable to make AppleScript see this application, except when I gave it the absolute path of where it is located. Obviously, as soon as my application bundle is moved to a different directory this will not work anymore so is not a solution. Tinkering with "path to me" and thus creating the current path to the bundled application also does not work, when saving the script, ScriptEditor tries to find the application and see if the commands I want to tell it exist btu fails and consequently does not save.
I tried putting the application into the Contents, Contents:MacOS, and Contents:Resources folders, all without success.

Dec 4, 2014I've just set up a FW800 SSD to use as an external boot drive for my 2011 iMac (mainly to speed up start-up).
I wanted to find out if I can direct the external boot to access the program files on the internal HD as a default. Or do I need to reload them all again on to the new partition/drive? My main concerns are that some are 1-time registration programs, plus I don't want to fill the smaller SSD too soon...

Sep 2, 2010I need a plug-in/add-on/application that will block certain websites I want at certain times. For example, block Youtube and Facebook from 4-6PM. Preferably these settings would be difficult or impossible to change once in place, haha. I want to be strict and not let myself procrastinate during the upcoming school year and I think this is the only way to actually do it.

Oct 31, 2009I just recently purchased a Macbook pro and have downloaded firefox as my web browser. I installed the add-on adblock pro, and it is without a doubt 100% ineffective; I view web pages and when I place the mouse on top of the icon it tells me it is active, however below it notifies me that it has blocked 0 out of 150 or however blockable items on the given page. I mean absolutely nothing is prevented, I found a similar add on for safari, and the same results, nothing blocked. I must be doing something completely wrong, or something so blatantly obvious, but I really am clueless.

Jun 28, 2012I will soon be getting a new macbook pro ret (soon) and will leave my macbook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) in the office where I am situated in university. I am looking to ensure that I can leave one at office and one at home. Yet keep access to both, I have seen "logmein pro" and seems to look good except one problem. It says to wake from sleep you need a computer on network running logmein. This I cannot guarantee as it is a university network. It also says that it will need to be linked to the network through cable to wake from sleep.
I will also need to close the lid of the laptop (or leave it open and risk trashing it) and have a password/login lock incase someone decides they want to be naughty. Anyway, I need a program that i can use over wifi (not highest priority) that WILL wake my macs from sleep (highest priority) and WILL (essential) allow me to have full remote access to computers including drag and drop. I dont care about accessing from my mobile as have drop box.

Mar 15, 2010I am connected to the internet via a belkin N+ router..... this is in turn connected to an adsl modem...I am having no problems with the signal to the router but at least four times a day my internet disappears....
When I run Network Diagnostics hey presto, your internet is working fine....The only things I have changed recently was that as I am running osx 10.4.11 I was having that issue where you couldn't access Network in sys pref, it kept saying "your settings have been changed by another application", I found a solution on here whereby you delete the plist prefs and rebuild them... That worked a charm but now I'm wondering is this connected in some way....

I got software from the makers of the belkin N+ wireless usb dongle chip that came with my router (belkin don't provide osx support but said that I could get a utility from the chip makers) I installed this but it never worked so uninstalled it, and ran disk utility and safe boot and pram and fsck (everything I could think of)
I only have one location in network, and airport is the only active network port
any ideas...????
