Applications :: Block Websites At Certain Times (Safari)?
Sep 2, 2010
I need a plug-in/add-on/application that will block certain websites I want at certain times. For example, block Youtube and Facebook from 4-6PM. Preferably these settings would be difficult or impossible to change once in place, haha. I want to be strict and not let myself procrastinate during the upcoming school year and I think this is the only way to actually do it.

We have a company, approx 32 macs, Lion Server, IP addresses distributed via LinkSys router. Aside from Parent Control and going via Terminal,I would like to know if there is a simple way of blocking access to certain websites? Are there any new apps which provide (hidden or out of sight) control for blocking websites?

My computer will be shared for a couple of weeks and there are certain websites that i need to block... Let's say i want to block facebook, heres what i did:
Opened up terminal, then typed 'sudo nano /etc/hosts' Added '127.0.0.1 facebook.com' on the bottom, having them separated with TAB instead of spaces Pressed ctrl+o and enter to save the file, then ctrl-x to quit the nano thing. Then i typed 'dscacheutil -flushcache' for changes to immediatelly take place Quit terminal
Am i doing something wrong here? I can still open facebook.com in Opera after those steps.... Am i missing something?

I have an Airport Base Station Extreme and am wondering if it can be used to block certain websites? I have seen ways of blocking websites on a specific computer in the house but with having children there are a few specific websites I want to be able to block on the complete wifi network whether it's used by a Mac, PC, or even a Nintendo Wii or iPod Touch. I figured there must be some way of blocking it with the Airport Base Station Extreme's software. If not, is there another way to block it? I have a comcast modem/router and don't really know of any software that can be used with that.

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station, the newest model until the new model was released this past Tuesday. I have recently installed the new update that Apple just released.
My question. Can I block specific websites such as [URL] I want to be able to block them on all computers on my network including an iPod Touch my son has so this is the reason I prefer to block them through the router instead of on the computer itself. Is there any way I can do this?

In Safari 5, there is a search bar at the top right that allows you to search Bing, Google, and Yahoo!
I would like to know if it's possible to add additional websites to that list. So, for instance, would it be possible to add Wikipedia to that drop-down list? If so, how? Will I be able to do this when the Extension Gallery goes live, sometime later this summer?
Essentially, I want Safari 5 to behave like Firefox/MyCroft and allow me to customize/manage the search list myself. I would never search Yahoo! or Bing, so I'd like to replace those with something a little more useful.

My Uncle just purchased a new Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard and he is having trouble accessing certain sites such as [URL] but has no problem accessing other sites like Apple or Google from Safari.
I tried to troubleshooting the issue by resetting Safari and by deleting the com.apple.safari.plist preference file in his home directory but he still has the problem.
I'm not sure if it is related, but I had to have him change the port from 5190 to 443 in iChat in order to connect to his AIM account so I could screen-share with him.
Also, he uses AOL mail and I was able to get it set up in Apple Mail but it is very sluggish to download.
He is using either Cisco or Linksys router and range extender and he said that his Windows computers have no problems connecting to any sites.

I have been using Safari faithfully since it was released, and in the last week it has developed a strange problem. I can't recall doing anything different that would have caused this problem, but now whenever I try to load a secure website (https), I get the error message "Safari could not load the page https:xxxx because it could not connect to the server." I have tried resetting Safari, but that didn't fix the problem. I have also thrown away the following files (Safari_1.2.pkg, Safari (folder), Safari (application), and com.apple.Safari.plist) and reinstalling a new version of Safari, also without success. I should add that Internet Explorer will always load the pages that choke Safari, but I hate using this program. Has anyone ever heard of this before, and does anyone know how to fix it? Here is a link to the error message I get when I try to log in to my .Mac account:

The last 2 days my sites in safari haven't been displaying properly. Here's an example:
As you can see the page is displaying in half the window. Other users are having no problem in safari, just me. When I reset Safari the problem seems to go away, only to come back in a couple hours. This problem has only come about in the last couple days, anyone ever have this problem and know how to fix it?

When I surf the Internet I always have a Facebook.net cache cookie in Safari. I already have installed Glimmerblocker, Facebookblocker, AdBlock, Ghostery, and Facebook Disconnect plugins all with strict filters but nothing works. The option to block third-party cookies is enabled, of course. I don't see Like buttons on webpages anymore but the cookie comes again and again. How can I ban that terrible Facebook from my computer?

I have set my Safari Preferences originally to block cookies from advertisers and third parties, but it ignores that setting. Finally, I set it to block all cookies. It also ignores that setting. Is there any way to have Safari recognize it's own preference settings? By the way, I had to use Firefox to sign on here at the Apple Website today. Safari no longers seems to work with the Apple discussion site. Very odd.

stop selected cookies from being set in Safari? For instance, I would like to permanently block cookies from, say, Facebook and Google Analytics. I have tried clicking the radio button in Preferences>Privacy that supposedly blocks cookies from Third Parties and Advertisers, and like many other users I have found that it does nothing. I get just as many cookies from third parties and advertisers whether the button is clicked or not. As far as I can tell it’s a placebo.
Apple’s Safari help on this issue is suspiciously carefully worded. It says that if you click the radio button, “this MIGHT HELP prevent certain advertisers from storing cookies on your computer.” What?!! What’s with the “might” and “help”? Talk about weasel words! Does it work or doesn’t it? Is it so difficult for software to recognize and delete a cookie? I find it pretty hard to believe that the problem is technical and not, um, deliberate. Apple is, after all, in the information business just like all the other major players.
Anyway, the software that people usually recommend for zapping cookies is Safari Cookies, but that deletes them only when you quit Safari – in other words, after said cookies have reported back to their source. So what’s the point? By then they have done exactly what you are trying to stop them from doing. I want the cookies deleted when they are set – BEFORE my privacy is compromised.

What's up in Safari 5.1.3 Cookies. After removing all the website data, I recently chose "Block Cookies Always" After opening "Yahoo" in Safari, I looked at the "Privacy Preference Pane" again. It now reads "Block cookies Always" and says 37 websites stored cookies or other data. I looks like the choice to block cookies has little effect on Safari. Is there any way to protect yourself from unwanted cookies? By the way, in order to sign in to the Apple discussion website, cookies must be enabled.

I waited a long time to upgrade to Safari 5.1 because the first time I installed it, it kept my fan on constantly / ate up all my CPU. I deinstalled and got the previous version. Finally, when no longer able to watch BBC content, I upgraded and got 5.1.4.
Safari used to work great. Now it decides that it has to force reload all pages about once every 40 minutes. It dumps all my cookies so I have to sign back into everything I had open - the facebook, Netflix, twitter, email, etc. It doesn't even remember what Netflix movie you were watching so you have to rebrowse - just because of the force reload. And if you somehow miss clicking on every open tab at the time to start the reload, then the next time you go to that tab it will start all the reloads again. Sometimes I just force quit Safari altogether and restart, clear my whole cache and dump all my cookies. Then I can get a clean hour out of it.
It takes up endless time to suffer through this bug and I see that it has been a bug for well over a year. What, if anything can one do about this? Why hasn't it been fixed?

I have three computers on my home network; A dual 1.8 G5 with Leopard, a Macbook Pro with Leopard, and a Windows XP Box. My problem with Safari started about 3 months ago, when I tried accessing a website via my g5. Safari said it could not connect to the server. I assumed the site was down. However, I hopped on my MBP and the site worked fine. In fact, I found a lot of sites that my G5 didn't want to access that my MBP could, on the same network. I have flushed my DNS cache, reset safari, cleared safari's cache, reset my router, cable modem, checked the DNS servers. Everything seems identical between the MBP and the g5. The problem happens in both Safari and Firefox

MacBook hangs on certain websites (yahoo mail, cbs sports, mens fraternity) but only from one of my wireless networks. PC works flawlessly on this situation and macbook works flawlessly on my first wireless router so the problem is tied to the interaction between my Macbook and the second wireless router. I've searched the forums and tried many fixes already that have been posted here or elsewhere: Reset Safari (it then allows me to reach yahoo mail once, hangs on every try thereafter). Go to Safari preferences and uncheck the box for warning of fraudulent sites (no change) Go to advanced settings and input DNS numbers from my ISP (this solved the problem for some websites but not others) try firefox (same problem as safari) software update everything (no help) install onyx (about to do that). network is a DSL modem connected to the first wireless router (DLINK N+). Second wireless router is linksys G (the problem child) and it is hardwire connected to first wireless router.

so I've had my MacBook for over a year, and I've never had any issues like this before. On my personal account, Safari, FireFox, Opera, and the like cannot access [URL], [URL](or any variation that leads to the same site), any other Google-based websites, my school's online gradebook, nor will it allow me to log into my Yahoo! account, though i can still search on yahoo. I can use the Google search bar at the top of my safari window just fine, but not [URL], as mentioned before.
