OS X :: Block All Incoming Connections / Stealth Box Grayed Out
Jul 8, 2010My Macbook has arrived, and since I have time to waste until the modem comes I figured I'd mess around with the Macbook and setup what I can in the meantime. I have some questions relating to the firewall and user accounts.
1. When I select "block all incoming connections" under the firewall options, the "stealth mode" box gets checked but grayed out. The box being grayed out confuses me. When I select "block all incoming connections" is "stealth mode" on or off? Why would that box be checked but grayed out?
2. I've seen it suggested that you should use one user account only for administrator purposes and another for daily use but not administrator purposes. Do you yourself do this?
3. When my modem arrives I'll have to configure it in Safari. Will I be able to setup my modem and use the internet with a non-administrator account?
Software :: How To Block A Specific Site
Aug 8, 2008Turns out that on days when I'm not at work, a co-worker is using my computer to access two specific porn sites. I would just like to block those sites to see if he gets the hint before reporting the problem. I can't just log the computer off when I'm not around.
**Bonus Challenge: Can I redirect him to, say, a page on my own domain that will let him know that he is busted?
These are my specifications:
OS: 10.4
Browser: Safari
Connection: DSL
Network: Hard-wired ethernet, connected to network printer but not to any other computers on the network.

Nov 5, 2009My MBP 3,1 (early 2008?) normally just connects to my WLAN when I start it up but very occasionally it connects to a nearby WiFi Hotspot. When it does, turning Airport off then on again sometimes gets it to connect to my WLAN but sometimes it just keeps re-connecting the the hotspot. The only solution - and it works every time - is to reboot. But rebooting seems such a Windows thing to have to do.
Does Airport "prioritize" its choice of connection, e.g. first tries to connect to the last WLAN it was connected to? One other thing. If I go into Network Prefs and click the Advanced button, I see my WLAN there but there seems to be no way to tell it to connect to that particular WLAN - the equivalent dialogue in Windows for example has a Connect button so you can select a WLAN and hit connect to force it to (try to) connect to that one, but there's no Connect button in OS X. In case it's important, I don't broadcast the SSID on my WLAN.

May 26, 2009I need to block outgoing traffic on specific ports. Is there anything default in OS X to do this? If not, what application could I use? I'd prefer to use the OS, if it has an ability to do this.

Jul 19, 2009I have an Early 2008 White MacBook. Recently I have been having problems acquiring wifi signals with it. My iPhone, othere peoples' phones, my sister's computer and everything else can get wifi in my room, but my MacBook has not been able to "see" the connections for the past few days. I am tethering my iPhone 3G right now and it's killing my data plan, I have used 3 GBs in 2 days (I have 6 GBs on my data plan)

Aug 28, 2009Is anyone else having problems with SL dropping your wireless connections. I've never had any problems with Leopard and my home wireless network but SL has dropped my connection numerous times since I did my install. The only way to recover seems to be to reboot my computer.

Mar 25, 2012At least 2-3 times daily my brand new Imac drops the connection to my home network- I have tried to reboot my airport extreme- my ipad and iphone and nest thermostat do not have these issues of dropped connections. As soon as I click the pale wireless signal at the top of the imac, it finds my home network and joins again, but it is a drag to have to redo this every time I want to stream music around the house or check my mail. All of my updates are current.

OS X :: Unable To Block A Wifi Signal
Nov 10, 2009I have 40 MacBooks in a small private High School. The High School is on a church campus. The school has 4 Airport Extreme's with an SSID of CCHS. On the same campus there are 2 other public WiFi networks. What I want to figure out without having to worry about blocking the Mac Addresses on 2 different routers everytime a new High School MacBook is being used it to setup on the MacBook so it won't connect to those WiFi signals. We use Apple Remote Desktop to monitor the MacBooks and sometimes the students are connected to other network and we can't see their laptops.
We have an Xserve server that all the MacBook's are bound to and can make changes to the MCX records but need to know what I can do in order to make it so they can't connect to these 2 other networks.

Apr 8, 2010'lo i use a iMac mid '09 @ work we have access to multiple connections Ethernet and Airport. Sadly the Ethernet is fire-walled and doesn't allow specific connections through; lucky though the airport is not.
The thing that is most frustrating is our system critical app HAS to run through the Ethernet to function under the fire-walled connection; but being on mac it's a friggin task to switch between the two because you have to go into network and set the service order each time to flip between them. I really need away that i can assign a specific application to use a specific connection (airport) that is active and connected while keeping the service order the same as to not mess with the system critical App that has to run through the enet. Is there any process or outside app that i could use to force other apps to use the airport connection while still leaving the Crit app using the enet?
I've been able to set the service order over to airport launch the app i want to use it and then switch back over to enet for the crit app but it seemed to work fine but that's a lot of Jank to pull each time i want to use an outside app. also i didn't really do it for any length of time so i don't know if that process would even hold up over time or flip back over to the opposite connection when it needed a fresh link

Apr 14, 2012I have a windows PC from work that I use at home and I connect to the Internet from the PC and all my other devices using Time Capsule. The PC connects to work on a work VPN but it also shows up on my Devices list on my MacBook. Is there a way to prevent the PC from connecting to the MacBook and to stop it showing up in Devices? I assume it's a OS issue but maybe it can be done in Time Capsule. Either way, I have no idea what to look for.
Here's why I want to do that. I have two external USB drives connected to my MacBook and they both keep staring and stopping at a minute or less interval. I finally realized that this only occurs when the PC is on and listed in Devices. So I'm pretty sure that the PC is doing something across the network that is causing the USB drives to spin up when they would otherwise be idle. I think it would fix the problem if I could prevent the PC from finding the MacBook.

Apr 27, 2010My 2010 15" MBP has constant Wifi dropouts, sometimes minutes at a time. Sometimes I have to reconnect. Yet it gets 4 bars. My MacBook never had these problems. It's generally slower, too. It's now useless for online video like Hulu. Anyone else seeing this? I wonder whether it's hardware (e.g. they moved the antenna, and/or because of the metal case) or software/drivers? I'm going to submit feedback after input from ya'll.
