Nov 17, 2008I have a large library and just in the past day, many of my songs have become greeted with the following: The song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it? I have not moved any files to another location since the last successful play and when I locate the file it is still in the original location. I have many different playlists and I cannot just delete my library or I will lose the content of those playlists...

Dec 4, 2014Today I went into my Itunes on my Macbook Air using OSX 10.9.5...Normally I play my songs on my Ipad but thought I would use my Macbook instead. The majoirty of my songs have an "i" besides the song and when I click to play it, I get the following message. "The song “*******” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it"? I then have the option to locate or cancel. The songs are still playable on my Ipad.

Feb 27, 2010When I attempt to songs in itunes on my computer I get an error message that says: "The song < Name of Song Here> could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" All the songs are listed but can not access them.
My OS: Vista
Have tried:
System restore
restoring via back-up
Uninstalling then re-installing iTunes
Rebooting computer
Have approx 1300 songs only 60 are accessible. Songs are not available on my Itouch. Itouch syncs but no songs there. Issue happened on 2/25 after my wife bought a song from iStore.

No problem I thought as I was using time machine however, when I went to re-load from an earlier back up iTunes failed to load completely, the song titles are the but with approx 50% of them I get the error "original file could not be found" also in many case I get the iCloud sign but with a ! in the cloud...

Jun 11, 2012For some reason, most (not all) of the songs in my iTunes have an exclamation mark beside them that says "The song [song title] could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
1) I dropped my computer a week or so ago. At the time it seemed fine with the exception of a small clicking sound from inside the computer.
2) Somone told me that the clicking sound might be because of a harddrive failure (or from a problem with the fan or optical drive). SO I started using Google Drive to backup some of my files, so far however it's only backuped up some of my music (maybe this is why only some of my music works)
3) Whenever I restart my computer now, my trash can becomes full of "Recovered Files". I think I might have deleted these the first few times I saw them.

Feb 28, 2012After I moved my iTunes media and library back from an external drive back to my new laptop (with a larger drive), I can't open iTunes. I get this message "The iTunes Library file cannot be found or created. The default location for this file is in the iTunes folder in the "Music" folder. The only option it gives is to click "OK" and iTunes shuts down. I tried reinstalling iTunes but the problem persists. I've checked and my iTunes Library.itl file is in its proper location.

ITunes :: Mp3 Will Not Rename - Reverts Back To Original File Name?
Jun 22, 2012I have a bunch of mp3 files that I would like to rename the original file name. Itunes only allows me to change metadata, but to fix broken names and keep organized, I need to change the file name. Once I rename the file, it shows the new name, and then upon playing it, it reverts back to the original name. I do not have any locked permissions. I have parallels and tried to rename them on the windows 7 side but same effect. I tried to shut all programs off so the file was not in use. I even tried to export it as a acc file type. I am exhausted looking for a solution, this is why I am using this forum as a last ditch effort.

Jan 20, 2009In trying to set up shared music among the users of my computer I think I deleted the original file info, even though there was a music folder showing folders for the individual artists in my library. These however now appear to be empty. I have the music listed in iTunes but when I try to open a song I get a window with the following message, "The song "...." could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" But no luck locating the files. The guy at the Apple Genius Bar said I could retrieve the music but refused to tell me how because it is supposedly illegal. I don't know why it is illegal because the tunes were purchased. But he did tell me to google the problem and I have come up empty handed.

I am wondering if there is a way to apply the info in itunes to change the original file names. So that I don't have to change them all manually on my hard drive if I want them in some sort of order. Something like 'apply itunes info to original filename'. I am pretty sure it isn't possible but thought it might be worth a try.

Aug 23, 2009ok trying not to get a panic attack here. I downloaded espionge to encrypt my valuable files and while it was encrypting (AES 128 bit i think) the program froze and I had to Force quit it. Now I try to open my file (that i was trying to encrypt) and it looks f*^&# up. I can't open it, and when I tried to unmount the partially encrypted file, espionage gave me errors that it couldnt recover the original file.
I had basically all my life's valuable accumulated data in that folder (it was 10 Gb+). I will praise anyone to the end of my days that can somehow tell me how to restore my file to its original state. Usefull info:
1) AM planning to pay gazillions for recovery software if need be, but free alternatives are always better.
2) I never secure delete if that helps
3) I still have the .sparseimage for the file created by espionage. (P.S. sparseimage's size looks really close to the orignal, also 10 Gb +).
4) Newest version of OSX, and have an IMac.
5) after incident I haven't done anything (no installations or downloads) apart from writing this.
6) the encrypted file was gonna be in HFS+ i think

Nov 24, 2010Time Machine was making a backup to my NAS (a Lacie Network Space 2), when I suddenly got a power failure in my apartment. After that I can't access the share anymore. I can connect to the share but when I click on the share TM was copying to (named "Open Share"), I get the error message: "The operation can�t be completed because the original item for �OpenShare� can�t be found" I can access the other shares and if I use an ftp-application I can access all shares normal.

Mar 13, 2009The volume for "Growl-1.1.4.dmg" cannot be found. At some point I must have accidentally added a DMG file to my Places, then removed the DMG prior to clearing it from Places. Now, when I attempt to select or right-click it I get the above message.
It does not appear in Finder > Prefs > Sidebar > Places.
How I can clear this out?

Dec 8, 2014My job entails working with well over 100,000 images and up until we upgraded to Yosemite, we had no issues locating a file while typing the name into Finder. Now when this search is performed, the search returns the files alias only. Normally we would be able to open the parent folder, but that option is gone from the list.

Oct 1, 2008I have an XServe running 10.4.11, with a United Digital RAID. About once a week I get a call from a user saying (and I quote one below): Quote: I've just lost a large Photoshop file due to the ongoing server problem - when you try to overwrite a file you're told you don't have permission, and the original file disappears. This has been happening on and off for about a year now, and I can't pin down the cause. Permissions are correct, they are saving to folders they have write access to - in fact they are usually opening those files, modifying them and saving them again when it happens. Due to hardware failures we've replaced the RAID three times this year, each time with a different model, so I'm fairly confident the RAID isn't involved. The files that are affected are Adobe Creative Suite 2 and 3 files, mostly Photoshop but some Illustrator and InDesign. Can anyone advise what I should check, or any known issues I've missed?

Jan 20, 2009Ive noticed that a couple of websites that have only .wmv available to download movies. I am running a Mac G4 with OS Tiger and Opera/Safari/Firefox for the net. I can easily play wmv's with my QTpro and or VLC.
The movies that I typically DL are usually 300 to 400 megs. They completely DL on my browser (Opera, Safari, or Firefox) after about 10 minutes or so. However once I DL the .wmv files onto my harddrive , they show up at only about 3 or 4 kb!!?? So thats about a total of like .2 seconds of play back!!?? Therefore one second of total playback.I believe this is not an Apple vs Windows issue, but something else. Any ideas?

Dec 31, 2009I've looked at some other posts that have gone over how to move files to an external drive, and they all say to use command while moving. I understand this copies the file and deletes the original, but when you make a copy and delete the original, you lose some of the original data, such as creation date, etc... This makes storage and organization more complicated than it has to be.

Dec 1, 2014I've successfully moved from a Mac Pro (2,1) to a Mac Mini (6,2), running OS 10.9.5 and iTunes 12.0.1.26. There were several glitches during the move, but I finally associated my iTunes folder, now on an external HD, with the application using the option key during launch method. Everything works, iPhones, iPads, iPods all sync properly, all the playlists are there and play all songs, the App Store and iTunes Store function normally using my single Apple ID.
Just one problem.
When I try to play content from within the iTunes Music [Media] folder, either by double-clicking on a track or by control-click "Open With", I get an error message "The Application Can't be Found".
My iTunes Library goes back to iTunes 3 and contains over 350 GB media. This new behavior is worrying, because I don't understand why moving the iTunes Folder should have caused this.

Jun 7, 2009Ive uploaded around 20CD to iTunes and twice now I have opened up a CD in my iMac to listen to it and the first song could not be found. What is going on here? Its not a big deal or anything because these are my CDs so ive just uploaded them again.
What might be going on here?
