MacBook :: Password Reset - No Setup File / Directory Found
Apr 10, 2010
Working on a friends computer he bought his wife for christmas. He has nothing on it, but the original OS. I don't have my disk with me and need to reset his password. I have watched several videos, but the part that gets me caught up is the
1. mount -uw/ (this part works)
2. rm/var/db.AppleSetupDone (this does not work) message says No such file or directory found.
He is running 10.6.

How can I make spotlight show the directory location of a found file?Â
Previous Mac search engines would show the directory location of a found file. This feature seems to be missing from spotlight in Lion. Am I using it correctly?

I have not used my iMac in about a year. Forgot the user password and don't remember the file vault password.
I used the cd to reset the userpasword, but it won't let me log on. It says in order to change the file vault password
I need the old user password and I don't remember it. The cd is of no use to me, it won't let me click on the system

I accidentally renamed the home directory on my macbook! its a mid 2007 model running 10.4.11 Tiger and I don't normally restart or log off my computer. I accidentally changed it the other day with a track pad misclick while I was multitabling on pokerstars and went back and changed it back later once I realized what I had done. I didn't think it was that severe of an issue until I started experiencing problems with apps.
I have found the folder with all the old stuff in the users file but I don't know how to apply all the old settings to my account. ALL my applications have restarted and my itunes is completely wiped. All the music files are on the computer but every time I log off all apps are again reset. How do I get everything back to normal?

I am trying to setup test server with following services:
DHCP
DNS
Open Directory
Profile Manager
Software Update
But not having much of success. I have installed 10.7.3 on virtual machine (Using Fusion 4) on Mac Pro and given a 4 GB of RAM. This machine is running in its own bubble, it has no communication even with host. So I have configured DHCP and DNS services which seems to be working fine (I have confirmed with another client which can get IP and DNS server address from this server).
Now whenever I have tried to run OD setup using both tools (Server App and Admin Tool), it takes forever to configure (more than 1 hour) and then it fails with error saying "check your network settings". I have checked and machine has proper IP address (tried both DHCP and Static) and also used "lookup" utility to resolve the DNS address both ways (forward and reverse).

If you're using SSD as boot drive what's your setup? Did you moved your user directory? Or maybe you just moved your Mail folders? Or perhaps you made no changes.

I am trying to run Cache Out. The program asks for the system password. I type in my usual password that I use for installing programs, or trashing stuff from the system folder... It won't allow me to run the program, saying the password is wrong.

I just got a new mac and when I was setting it up, I miss typed my username (well to be honest, this is not my mac, its a friends and I am setting it up! So I missed type their username). I changed the username of the account from the control panel. I now want to change the user directory name. Can I just change it like any other directory? And finally, when u want to install something the security warning that comes up and asks for your password, also has the name miss typed. So how do I also change that?

My mother recently passed away and I've inherited her Mac Pro. She was the official "administrator" and no one knows her password. Is there any way to reset the password without knowing the original password? Or, is there a way to reset the whole laptop to factory settings? I'm not concerned about losing content from the laptop.

I have brought Macbook A1181 from ebay it works fine but there were two accounts but I don't know the password and when I try to get back to the ebay seller he is closed he is account. Also I have read the Mac website that I need to use the Code: If you don't remember the password and automatic login is turned off, you can reset the administrator password using the Mac OS X User Install disc. Because a user with the Mac OS X install disc can gain unrestricted access to your computer, you should keep the disc in a safe place. To reset the administrator password using the Mac OS X disc:
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc and restart the computer.
2. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the spinning gear.
3. When the Installer appears, choose Utilities > Reset Password.
4. Follow the onscreen instructions to change the password.
5. Quit the Installer and restart your computer while holding down the mouse button to eject the disc.
But didn't received any CDs from him so I don't know what version of CD I need it also I am new to macbook so its fully confusing please somebody help me how to reset my password.

Can I reset my password (Without reinstalling, I'm sure that might be the general answer...)for installations? I am 100% sure I typed it in correctly both times, caps, no caps, and then tried another password, caps, no caps. Both incorrect. It was recently fixed so they might have changed the password on re-installation.Is it best to email them if I can't fix it - easily - myself?
