OS X :: Deleted Bootcamp - Original Item Cannot Be Found?
Sep 4, 2009
I received a Mac Mini for my birthday from my husband. I've had my wonderful Mini for less than 2 weeks and am trying to get used to it after working with a MS/Dell system since the early 1990's. I accidentally deleted Bootcamp and now when I click on the bootcamp icon on my desktop I get the following error message: The alias "My Boot Camp" can't be opened because the original item can't be found. What do I need to do to reinstall/make this work again?

Time Machine was making a backup to my NAS (a Lacie Network Space 2), when I suddenly got a power failure in my apartment. After that I can't access the share anymore. I can connect to the share but when I click on the share TM was copying to (named "Open Share"), I get the error message: "The operation cant be completed because the original item for OpenShare cant be found" I can access the other shares and if I use an ftp-application I can access all shares normal.

I just bought the disc from apple, updated my computer to snow leopard, and am confused by this question mark. I have highlighted it with a red box for your viewing ease. What does it mean? It says "Item can't be found" when I click it.

I couldn't find any resolve from anyone on this topic in older forums, but I have the folder generated and backed up on my iMac and my backup drive, a DROBO. I managed to get rid of the lost+found items on the iMac, but the DROBO says "The operation cant be completed because the item dir_1558208 is in use." as well as the rest of the contents.

I have a large library and just in the past day, many of my songs have become greeted with the following: The song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it? I have not moved any files to another location since the last successful play and when I locate the file it is still in the original location. I have many different playlists and I cannot just delete my library or I will lose the content of those playlists...

Today I went into my Itunes on my Macbook Air using OSX 10.9.5...Normally I play my songs on my Ipad but thought I would use my Macbook instead. The majoirty of my songs have an "i" besides the song and when I click to play it, I get the following message. "The song “*******” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it"? I then have the option to locate or cancel. The songs are still playable on my Ipad.

I have copied many Cd's and digital music files to iTunes but since restoring my hard drive, this message appears every time I click of most songs in my library: "...original file can not be found. Would you like to locate it?" However, I can't find it.

I bought me a brand new iMac. I freaking love this thing, don't know why I didn't make the jump (back) sooner. Anywho, I have two external hard drives in which I used to transfer data, including some pictures and audio from my Windows Vista computer to the new Mac. I go ahead and finish transferring over the files. When I go to delete the files off my external hard drive, I am met with a "the item (insert file name here) can't be moved to the trash because it can't be deleted". Now, I notice that this happens with ANY file or folder that I attempt to move to the trash can from either of my external hard drives. I can't seem to find a solutions anywhere either via a Google search or on this forum.

After performing a Time Machine restoration, the "Places" list in the Finder sidebar contains a folder icon that can not be selected or deleted. It does not appear on the list of places to show in Finder Preferences, so there is nothing to uncheck. How do I get rid of this erroneous icon?

My problem is that I can't drag a file to the trash. When I try to delete a file by right-clicking and choose "move to trash" I get a message telling me that the item will be deleted permanently and that I cannot undo this action. In other words it is possible to delete a file permanently, but I would like to have the option to move them to the trash first. I have recently tried to partition the internal hard-drive using Boot Camp, however unsuccessfully. I don't know if the two are related. I have Macbook 13,3" early 2010 with the latest version of Snow Leopard, 10.6.4.

I was seeking a job for the past 6 months. I finally got a call for an interview at 3 places. I am in big trouble now. I was having major problems with my computer constantly crashing, and I was advised to re-install my MAC OS 10.5 original disc to get a new system. I forgot to backup my important files and folders. Now I need to print my resume that I saved, it has been deleted completely. I do not even have a hard copy to refer to. I cannot remember what was on it in order to make another one. I have 2 job interviews on Monday 12th and 1 on Tuesday 13th. Do they have any software I can get to restore files that were deleted when I re-installed my original MAC OS 10.5 disc

In trying to set up shared music among the users of my computer I think I deleted the original file info, even though there was a music folder showing folders for the individual artists in my library. These however now appear to be empty. I have the music listed in iTunes but when I try to open a song I get a window with the following message, "The song "...." could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" But no luck locating the files. The guy at the Apple Genius Bar said I could retrieve the music but refused to tell me how because it is supposedly illegal. I don't know why it is illegal because the tunes were purchased. But he did tell me to google the problem and I have come up empty handed.

I move a file to Trash or use the delete command a pop message comes up "This item will be deleted immediately. You can?t undo this action" - 'Show warning' is not selected in finder preferences. I have a nine day old 27" gi7 imac where I copied all the settings from my macbook pro via time machine. Both machines were on 10.6.2 and I am the only user - this problem only surfaced today. I ran Repair Disk Permissions with no luck and called Apple?.. they said that the only way to get rid of this was to perform a clean install making sure to back-up everything. I said that that was crazy and would involve me in having to invest in a new HD as I've already filled the imac with 500gb of stuff that has now been wiped over and I don't have a spare 500 gigs kicking around.

IMac OS X 10.5.6 on 392.86 GB (392,855,289,856 bytes) of HD. 392.86 GB (392,855,289,856 bytes) of Windows Vista on what is left of original drive. My first action was to format the "Spare Disk" HFS+ which was successful but. The anomaly began once I removed the Bootcamp partition. I now have two drives which was once the original drive. The drive which had windows on now appears as "Spare Disk" when I view it through System Profiler but does not show up in the finder menu. It now appears as though the "Spare Disk" us useless and wasted space. My goal was to remove the BC partition and reunite the windows partition with the original. I'm not sure if I'm explaining this properly but simply put, I would like to connect the spare disk with the original disk so I have more usable space.

Okay so I don't know what happened but before I reformatted my OS X, I deleted my 50GB Boot Camp partition, but when I reformat I notice that it says I only have "200GB" available on my HD instead of "250GB", I'm not sure what happened to the partition I "deleted"I'm still new to a Mac, is there a way to check how much space is used already and etc? I really don't know what happened to the 50GB.

I bootcamped my Macbook Pro with minimal assistance from my mac geek husband tonight - and messed up - BIG TIME. When in the "partition mode" of windows it asked which of the systems I wanted to FAT or partition. Well - me not knowing - thought the 200mb space was a little small and deleted it.
When the system restarted and I read the error - I knew I was in BIG trouble. So I went to boot camp assistant and got this message:
The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
I am FREAKING out BIG TIME! Can you help me to restore the information - so I may go and humbly as my husband to help me do it right - or maybe google the directions before starting.

I've looked at some other posts that have gone over how to move files to an external drive, and they all say to use command while moving. I understand this copies the file and deletes the original, but when you make a copy and delete the original, you lose some of the original data, such as creation date, etc... This makes storage and organization more complicated than it has to be.

I have a MacPro (Intel), and I had my Music folder on a second (non-boot) internal drive. That drive was getting full, so I bought yet another internal drive to put in one of the other bays, thinking to copy the folders to the new, larger-capacity drive. So I bought a 2 Tb drive and transferred all my MOVIES to the new drive, but then went back and deleted my MUSIC folder and emptied the trash. I knew immediately that I'd made a mistake.
I haven't written anything to that drive whatsoever from that moment on, so absolutely nothing should have been over-written. I have plenty of room on the new drive to which I can recover the deleted files. Unfortunately the folder/directory was very large, with over 20,000 files, mostly of podcasts/spoken word stuff, much of which is no longer available or would represent thousands of hours of download time, plus all my digitized folk music from long out-of-print LP records.
You'd think I'd be more responsible with >600 Gb of data! However, fortunately the drive is in good working order, it just requires a good recovery strategy. I know that services that do recovery charge a fortune, and because I haven't written anything to that drive and it still mounts without problems, I'm hoping I can do this myself with a good data recovery software package. Because I am talking about literally thousands of files, it is just too painful to think about editing all the metadata about each file (name, artist, album, etc.), and ideally I would like to recover the files and the file structure so podcasts are recovered as such, etc.
Is this at all possible?
If so, what are the relative merits of File Salvage vs. Data Rescue vs. Kernel for Macintosh (Nucleus Data Recovery) vs. VirtualLab Data Recovery vs. Stellar Phoenix? Is there something better than these--these are the only ones I found on a Web search. Are there any head-to-head reviews of which someone is aware?

I have both my gmail accounts set up with teh Mail app on my Macbook Pro , I went ahead and deletd a bunch of files, some that contain attachements and I emptied the trash, they appear to be gone, not really, if i restart the computer and start up Mail again and click the ALL MAIL box all the emails show up again!! and if i search a phrase or name via Spotlight all the emails show up again! I want the emails gone for good, I went into Mail Prefrerence and checked/unchecled all the necessary tabs, I also checked that I dont want messages saved offline, FYI when I check the email inbox via browser www.google.com / gmail teh emails arent there but they seem to be stored on my mac.
