View 2 RepliesFor some reason when I try to activate some menu bar items, they won't stay active long enough for me to write or click a button. For example, when I click on the Fantasical calendar app, I can write and schedule a calendar event, but when I launch say the small window in the menu bar for Day One diary, it won't stay open. When I use the keyboard shortcut to activate Alfred, the app launcher, that window also won't stay open in order for me to write my input. I hope this is coming across clear. If need be I can do a screen capture to illustrate the problem. This is very annoying, and I really need to fix it. I ran disk repair a couple of times, but I don't know what else to do.

Closing an application used to be simple:
Right click on the dock icon > then > "Quit"
Or menu bar > app name > "Quit ___"Â
But recently I discovered, after checking in the Activity Monitor app, that some apps just will retire its icon from the Dock, but they will still be running in the background actively consuming resourses (real mem, % CPU, CPU Time, etc.)Â
I have noticed that this can happen with other apps. (So far) these others are: iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, AddressBook, QuickTime.Â
It is disturbing to think that every time I have to close an app, I have to do it by using the "Quit Process" in the Activity Monitor utility.Â
Either the app is set to keep the icon in the dock or not, after closing the app, the icon's light indicator turns of or the icon removes itself from the dock acordingly, but the app will remaing running in the background.Â

I just upgraded to iTunes 10.6.3 on my MBP running Lion. iTunes is HOGGING my memory and making my MBP run VERY HOT. When i try to quit the process from the activity monitor it immediatley restarts.?

I enabled the Mac equivalent to fast user switching (allows more than 1 profile to be logged in); when I want to shut down the system I get box that says other people are signed on, if you want to shut down, enter user name and password.
The problem is that no matter which user id/password combo I put in, it is not recognized; not even either of the admin users.
I am unable to Bind any of my Mac Clients to Active Directory after upgrading to Mac OS 10.5.5 and 10.5.6.
I am now running 10.5.6 but the problem started when I upgraded to 10.5.5, 10.5.6 did not resolve the problem. The Directory Service Plug-in will not authenticate my username and password.
BUT.. I just doubled my RAM from 1 to 2 gigs. After a fresh boot and loading up Safari, Firefox, and iPhoto, and then CLOSING all of them and running no apps, Leopard shows more than a gig of ACTIVE memory, which even after sitting there for an hour doing nothing - does NOT go over to the INactive section. Why? I'm not asking why it doesn't go to "free". I know why.
My top command output:
PhysMem: 240M wired, 1006M active, 307M inactive, 1559M used, 489M free.
VM: 5579M + 374M 276396(0) pageins, 61(0) pageouts
I put my iMac to sleep before I go to bed and it usually stays in that state until I get up. Lately something is waking it routinely during the night. I have attempted to fix this by following the suggestions in Mac Help but I still can't get to the bottom of it.

All of a sudden when I pause iTunes on my iMac it will unexpectedly start playing again after a few minutes. Can't seem to find a way to stop this.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI looked at the size of my library - huge! It's huge becuase I ripped all my CD's to iTunes as aiff to maintain quality a while back, but now I figured it was time to convert to Apple Lossless. I went to the iTunes music folder, filtered by bitrate to select out all the 1411 Kb aiff files, selected all of them, and right clicked to convert to Apple Lossless. The process went smoothly enough, but when I checked, the conversion had stripped all the playlist assignments for every tune. I had a bunch of empty playlists, and a huge list in "recent imports", all piled in to this single huge file. I shouldn't have to go back and re-assign every tune to it's previous playlists just because I wanted to convert format. There must be a workaround that leaves them with the playlist designations before they were converted.

View 1 Replies View RelatedCheck this out. Minimize iTunes using the green button to get the mini-player. Then plug in your iPhone. iTunes 8.1.1 no longer expands and pops to the front of your screen! That's really cool! I noticed this in 8.1.1, but it could have been introduced in 8.1, I don't know.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am unable to quit Safari on my Mac. The option is not highlighted on the drop down in the top left hand corner and when I try and quit from the Safari App in the dock this does not work. As a result I cannot shut down my computer or download new software updates.

I got my new Office Mac, and I was hoping to install it. It said Firefox and Safari needed to close. Firefox was a snap (good job guys!), but Safari is doing HORRIBLE. It is not forcing to quit at all, and I don't want to restart or shut down (I bet it wouldn't work.) Now, according to THIS issue... I can't install my Mac Office 2011, and THAT on the other hand stinks, because I need it for school projects.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having a situation where I will "quit" an application and it closes but then it leaves a grey screen that I cannot interact with or make go away. When I scroll between the various screens there is a blank grey screen where the application that I just closed used to be. When I use my track pad to show me all of the screens that are open it shows the application that I was in (e.g., itunes) but shows it as a grey screen that cannot be closed unless I restart my computer.

I accidentally quit finder instead of Safari this morning and now Finder will not open. I still have it in the dock but nothing will work. I also do not have the toolbar at the top either. I can still open the other icons on the dock and use them so I can get on Safari, Ical, etc. I thought I did this once before but I can't remember what I did to rectify the situation.

Recently I have been unable to quit Safari, it starts running really slow and when I try to quit and restart nothing happens. The 'Quit' command under 'File' is greyed out and right clicking in the dock doesn't reveal 'Force Quit'; only 'Quit' shows but that doesn't work. The only solution is to re-boot the computer. This has happened a number of times recently.

I get the message - hl2_osx has unexpectedly quit - everytime I try an launch CS source, DoD source or any other Half Life based game on Steam. I have read similar questions, but none are pertaining to a gaming issue. These games used to load fine until recently.
I have some software such as mail, text edit running and suddenly it stop responding. The mouse cursor keep on spinning for a long time. What you normally do is hit Option + Command + Esc to force quit the software. After i've done so. The software crashed and ask you to send in the crashed report and everything else is very normal. But the software dint actually quite. i can still see a small indication (at the dock) below the icon that the software still running and when i hit Option + Command + Esc again. I still can see the software in the force quite dialog, it doesn't report it as stop responding. When i check the Activity Monitor, there is nothing there.
