OS X V10.7 Lion :: Applications Stay Running After Quit?
May 17, 2012
Closing an application used to be simple:
Right click on the dock icon > then > "Quit"
Or menu bar > app name > "Quit ___"Â
But recently I discovered, after checking in the Activity Monitor app, that some apps just will retire its icon from the Dock, but they will still be running in the background actively consuming resourses (real mem, % CPU, CPU Time, etc.)Â
I have noticed that this can happen with other apps. (So far) these others are: iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, AddressBook, QuickTime.Â
It is disturbing to think that every time I have to close an app, I have to do it by using the "Quit Process" in the Activity Monitor utility.Â
Either the app is set to keep the icon in the dock or not, after closing the app, the icon's light indicator turns of or the icon removes itself from the dock acordingly, but the app will remaing running in the background.Â

It's impossible to quit iTunes, force quit neither. It stays active, with force quit it appears again.

Mail is running in the background, but it won't quit or open. I need to reboot (i.e. hold down start for 10 seconds) to restart. Other applications are also very slow to respond during this, incl. Safari. I'm on a Late 2007 Macbook running 10.6.2, which I updated yesterday.

Sometimes random applications quit unexpectedly, and sometimes the Finder keeps quitting and restarting repeatedly. Last time this happened after waking the machine from hibernation, and Skype and Chrome quit. Before other applications has quit as well, such as MATLAB and Spotify. Anyone got any idea what might be amiss? I've got the newest version of everything that I'm running.

My iMac keeps semi freezing. When I click the mouse and the little color wheel begins to rotate it always freezes. It cannot complete an order to open a program or even take any action. Not even the internet works. To quit I have to unplug the computer. Force quit and even the on/off button doesn't work. I'm running 10.6.8.

I am running Mavericks 10.9.3.
I always quit out of all apps before doing a shutdown. I make sure that nothing, except Finder, is running when i shutdown. And, I do a full shutdown, not just sleep. Â
Yet, occasionally, the apps that were running before I quit out of them will restart when I turn the MacBook back on.Â

Lion makes the sleep process take a while. But after a short time my Mac Pro wakes from sleep and even though I have it set up to go back to sleep after five minutes of inactivity it never goes back to sleep. This wasn't a problem with the first version of Lion.

i would like to install my system and all applications on flash drive. I have seen those SSD kit I can install [URL]... but was wondering if I could simply install and run from SD card, would save me from replacing my optic drive). Â
Basically I would like my system and all applications running from Flash, while all my Medias would still be saved on the hard drive. That way, my daily work (Mail, Calendar, IMovie, Photoshop, Safari, ...) would run extremelly fast and when it comes to watch a movie and look at pictures (which i shouldn't be doing at work anyway...) it would read from my hard drive and then have the "normal" speed. Â
For Info, I have an early 2011 Mac Book Pro 17", 2.2 I7, 4g of Ram, basic configuration) Â
It seems pretty easy in my mind to set it up that way, but it might sound too easy... and wondering why apple never actually made it that way in their machine. Because lets face it, that would be awesome !!! Â
So... millions of question here. First is it possible ? is and SD card reliable enough to run all day long, every day ? I would have to use an expresscard Adapter, would that make me loose speed ? Â
I will also upgrade to 8g Ram. Â again seems like a cheap way to get the dream computer, so there might be something I'm not aware of. Â

It's just that simple: I set the Finder preferences to always open a new window to a partition, it works, but after I restart, it opens to my home folder, and the preferences window has a blank space for "New Finder windows show".Â
Things I tried:
-- Trashing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
-- Repairing disk permissions
-- Repairing the drive
-- Created a new user account.Â

this is the worst OS apple has ever released and if i could go back to snow leopard I would, but i cannot because of icloud. Â

I run Address Book and "Open at Login". I'm running MacOS X Lion 10.7.4 and Address Book 6.1.2 on a MacBook Pro. I have just recently noticed that though the Dock shows the little blue indicator that Address Book is running and the Ctrl-TAB shows that Address Book is running, there is no way to bring up Address Book's Window. This started about a week or so ago.

After installing Mac OS Lion my iMac will not stay connected to wifi. I've read numerous discussion strings and this problem is pervasive with OS Lion. Apple needs to address this ASAP! Is there an answer discovered in the last few days?

My brand new iMac will not stay connected to wifi. When I try to open Safari it says a wifi connection does not exist. When I diagnose the problem it connects to my wifi before I even get a chance to choose a wifie network to diagnose. This happens every single time.

For some reason when I try to activate some menu bar items, they won't stay active long enough for me to write or click a button. For example, when I click on the Fantasical calendar app, I can write and schedule a calendar event, but when I launch say the small window in the menu bar for Day One diary, it won't stay open. When I use the keyboard shortcut to activate Alfred, the app launcher, that window also won't stay open in order for me to write my input. I hope this is coming across clear. If need be I can do a screen capture to illustrate the problem. This is very annoying, and I really need to fix it. I ran disk repair a couple of times, but I don't know what else to do.

I have a problem with my iMac which is running OSX 10.8.5. I think the easiest way to explain this would be to just give a simple example. For example let's say I have Excel and Word both open. I shut them both down. Then I completely shut down my computer. Power off. I go to bed. Next morning I boot up and guess what? Word and Excel are now running again, just as if I had never shut them them down.

I use a White MacBook (early 2008) with OS X Lion on it. I checked for updates recently, when I found that OS update 10.7.4 was available.Â
When I started the update, the Software Update utility asked me to update by restarting. After I did this, the update got downloaded and the machine restarted. Now, it is getting stuck on the boot screen with the Apple logo replaced by a 'circle with a line in it' (like a typical "not allowed") logo.Â

I have two printers connected to my iMac (10.7.3) and I am trying to enable printer sharing for my MacBook Air to utilize the iMac's printers. On the iMac, I go to System Prefrences > Sharing and check Printer Sharing and I ensure that both printers are being shared. Everything is checked, but the second I close the System Prefrences window, the printer sharing stops working. I go back into System Prefrences and the Printer Sharing box is unchecked.

Check this out. Minimize iTunes using the green button to get the mini-player. Then plug in your iPhone. iTunes 8.1.1 no longer expands and pops to the front of your screen! That's really cool! I noticed this in 8.1.1, but it could have been introduced in 8.1, I don't know.

I have used CandyBar to change the icon for my iDisk. However I have run into some strangeness On the desktop, if I quit and then reconnect to the iDisk it will show the new icon for a moment and then change it back to the default purple drive with the cloud picture. yet, in the finder on the left hand side it shows the new icon. But at the top of the finder window it shows the default icon. WTF?
I have tried changing it in CandyBar several times but this is always the behaviour after the changes

When installing apps through Installer (from .dmg disk images and .pkg packages), everything works smoothly until it asks me for a password. When I enter it, Installer goes back to the screen before it asked me for the password. When I click next, it asks me for my password, and the cycle repeats. I tried removing my password to no avail. I can install .pkg files from the sudo installer -pkg command. I dont know how to do this for installers that are in app form.

How do I close an application that won't quit and doesn't show up in the force quit dialogue box? I was trying to open Printer Pro but it doesn't show up in the finder and when I tried to put it in the trash it says it can't throw it away because it's open. The forced quit dialogue box does not list it as open. What do I do?

I got my new Office Mac, and I was hoping to install it. It said Firefox and Safari needed to close. Firefox was a snap (good job guys!), but Safari is doing HORRIBLE. It is not forcing to quit at all, and I don't want to restart or shut down (I bet it wouldn't work.) Now, according to THIS issue... I can't install my Mac Office 2011, and THAT on the other hand stinks, because I need it for school projects.
