I accidentally quit finder instead of Safari this morning and now Finder will not open. I still have it in the dock but nothing will work. I also do not have the toolbar at the top either. I can still open the other icons on the dock and use them so I can get on Safari, Ical, etc. I thought I did this once before but I can't remember what I did to rectify the situation.

I tried to reinstall it with a .pkg but it's the same result...I can restore the application with the restore disk if I have to...But all the other iLife apps work...
I tried every option to empty trash... Clicking alt when I select empty trash in finder... Using terminal / see locked files...
I tried to empty trash by removing files from trash it ended copying files to my desktop instead of removing them from trash...

I am unable to open my finder app. When i click on it and hit, open, a box pops up and says "finder cannot be opened -600, finder was working perfectly earlier today and now i have issues. i have a macbook pro 2.9 ghz, OS x 10.9.4
i opened the console and cleared display, but i am unsure of what else i needed to do, cause that didn't work.

I'm sure it's not a virus but I'd like to prevent this episode again.
-About 10 minutes ago I inserted my memory stick into my keyboard, and then connected to Cisco.
-I then tried to connect to my school's server and while the progress bar was loading I opened InDesign.
-The Indesign icon started doing it's little jumping thing but nothing was happening. I minimized my browser to look at the progress bar and it was still trying to connect to server. I waited about 2 minutes and when nothing happened I tried a force quit.
-It said that InDesign was not responding so I Force Quit it and nothing happened.
-I then tried to shut down the progress bar but I had that infuriating pinwheel going.
-I decided on a manual shutdown.
-I then turned the computer back on.
-Repeated the same steps except that this time Force Quit said my Safari AND Finder was not responding.
-I Force Quit Finder first. Then Force Quit Connecting to server but all of a sudden my desktop items disappeared as well as my toolbar at the top.
-I tried another manual shutdown because I couldn't call up my Force Quit with my shortcut keys and waited a minute.
-Turned my computer back on but the screen hadn't changed it was as if I had merely put my computer to sleep. I tried this twice.
-Then I turned it off again and this time unplugged my computer and waited a couple seconds.
-I am now on my third try and am afraid to connect to my school's server. I have only opened Safari to type this. I have an assignment due tomorrow!
I noticed that this problem started last night. When I open anything in Finder or a folder on the desk top and double click it doesn't open. But on the desktop,if I right click the folder and click open it opens. But in finder it doesn't. I have shut down the computer and waited and re-started but still no help. This also happens when I use pages, and numbers.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI don't know what the deal is. I'm trying to install 2 sticks of 2GB into my 7,1 iMac, and the screw just won't turn. I'm using a standard Phillips head, and nothin' doin'. The screw is now starting to strip, so I guess I'm going to have to take this into the friggin' Apple Store just to have them open the thing.
I open the finder, it does not seem to quit like the other apps, when I right click it, there is no option to quit.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried everything. All of the screwdrivers in my house, with no force and with full force. The damned screw wont move at all. I've had this iMac since 2008 and I just feel like adding more RAM, as the 1GB is kind of well, small.
I recently made a program go off the dock so that it doesn't bother me, and I also played with some SSH settings in /etc/sshd_config and /etc/services (specifically, the ones mentioned in Rule #4 of Mac Geekery's Basic Mac OS X Security article) and now my computer won't shut down, saying that Finder won't quit.
However, the little white arrow is not below the Finder icon in the Dock. Also my desktop items and top menu disappear. Once the "Logout timed out because Finder failed to quit" window pops up, I reopen finder from the Dock and everything comes back. I have tried manually quitting the hidden server application before shutdown, so I don't think it is that. By the way it is a Mac Book running OS X 10.5.4 which i bought new last august.
I was just messing around with Speech Commands and accidentally discovered that if, in Finder, you say "Quit this application", Finder will quit!EDIT: I should also add that if you don't have any other applications open, it will reopen right away

View 24 Replies View RelatedSometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.
Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

When i click on the iphoto icon in the dock it will not open for me to view or add any photos. The machine is an imac G4 OSX 10.2.8 with the original 125 ghz processor & 256mb memory. I have never had this problem before. It was purchased in 2003.

If I go to the Finder from another application, the Finder quits and windows disappear. If I select "new finder window" finder repeatedly quits. After 10 or fifteen times (usually I just restart) I can get the finder window to stay open.
Using Safari and selecting a file to upload causes Safari to quit. Firefox works fine.
I have done a clean install. Problems persist intermittently.
Any advice on how I can fix this?
When I try to open a folder or click Finder Find File, nothing happens. To get the folder window to display, I must force quit and relaunch Finder. I have just upgraded from Snow leopard to Lion.

I've assigned the tags I want to a file, I'll get the beach ball. If I go into the Force Quit window it will say that Finder is not responding. But if I wait about 20-30 seconds it stops and I can go about my business w/o re-starting the Finder. I only noticed this after installing Yosemite. I use tags A LOT.

Q. I stopped an update installer of some Apple software and the Finder, now crashes without showing the desktop. Only the Apple logo and a spinning Beachball which never disappears. I can start up in the Unix mode and also in the Windows mode. I have an Imac with Osx 10.4. I could reinstall the system but probably I will loose a lot of unique files and poto's. In the Unix mode I have removed the Installer file from the desktop but it didn't change the startup. I have little experience with Unix.
