Sep 28, 2009I am trying to put a disk into my IMAC desktop and for some reason it keeps spitting back out the disk no matter what disc I try any idea?

Sep 7, 2006I've decided to reinstall OS X on my powerbook, but I'm having trouble. I can't partition or erase using disk utility from the cd. It says it's trying but it just sits there. When I try to do a erase and install, it stays at "preparing the disk".

Feb 18, 2009Yesterday I switched on my macbook (Leopard) and got the flashing question mark. Ran all the resets and booted with disk utility which encountered an 'Invalid B-tree Node' when attempting to repair the disk. Additionally, the SMART status was verified.
I ran DW 4 last night, and performed the hardware tests which reported that the disk was operating like normal. The majority of my media files and additional work is backed up to my Time Capsule but I still have a folder of papers that are relatively new, and wanted to retrieve. While DW managed to reconstruct the majority of my drive (there seemed to be 15g missing - but it's just music files) including this folder, it couldn't replace the disk, as it encountered 'Serious Disk Malfunctions'.
So, via the Disk Preview I want to transfer my saved folders to my TC, but I don't appear to be able to locate it (via ethernet) through DW - even if it's connected when I boot up in DW. So, first request is: Can I connect to my TC to transfer across in DW's preview?
Second is: What are my options if DW can't replace? Do I need to take it into Apple and get a new HD (it's out of warranty)? It's possibly worth noting that I'm a student and have absolutely no money - so cost effective options are a bonus!

Apr 11, 2010I am considering purchasing diskwarrior but want to make sure it can help my situation before I purchase it. My imac will not boot from the internal hard drive (Intel processor) When I use disk utility to try and repair the disk, I get error messages and it won't repair. I can see the HD but cannot repair it. When I connect using target mode with my mac book pro, the hard drive does not appear on my host (macbook pro) computer. I have reloaded OS X (Leopard) onto a firewire external drive and can boot my imac that way but I can not find my original internal Macintosh HD. Will disk warrior be able to help with this scenario. I would really like to access that internal Macintosh HD and retrieve my files.

OS X :: Unable To Boot From Disk
Sep 23, 2010So I have been running into a bunch of weird issues lately (got errors on emptying the trash, FCP is acting all crashy, couldn't unmount an internal disk to format it, etc) so I wanted to run the hardware test that is on the installer disk that came with my MP. Problem is, the machine won't boot from the disk. If I boot holding down the D key it boots to a grey screen and a dialog box pops up for a second and then *poof* the computer shuts down. It happens so quick there is literally no chance to read what it says. If I boot holding down option and try to click the install disk I immediately hang, the mouse doesn't respond anymore and I'm screwed and need to hard restart.
So I figured "hey I got a backup, I'll just reinstall OS X". Nope, still won't boot using the "install Mac OS X" from the disk. I click restart and I just get a grey screen again and nothing happens. I hear the drive spin up and then spin down and silence. Everything is disconnected from the computer except for my screen my keyboard and mouse.
Everything is up to date. Zapped pram, repaired permission and ran cron scripts via Onyx so I am at a loss what to do now. This is troubling because even if I have a problem I have no way of reinstalling the OS. I can work because the computer is working almost normally but this worries me.
This is a new MP 2.8.
Everything has been working tip top until this morning.
EDIT - I bought SL for my MBP so I have the retail disk. I was able to boot from that but it doesn't have the hardware test so it still looks like I am SOL for now.
OS X :: Unable To Eject - Disk In Use?
Oct 25, 2007I have just started getting this pretty annoying error today on my external FW drive.
I want to eject it so I can put some felt pads underneath it as its making a right humming noise on the desk but when i try to eject it i get the error.
Now unless I am missing something, it tells me to quit all apps, yes, ive done that, the only thing that is running is finder.Is there any easy way of finding out what is open on the external drive before I just pull the plug on the whole thing!?

Jul 20, 2009It all started last week when I tried burning an ISO to a blank Memorex DVD-R. When I inserted the DVD it would eject the CD over and over again no matter how many times I tried. The same thing would happen if I used a Memorex CD-R. Now these CD's worked in the past without any issues, and seem to work just fine on my other computers.
I decided to go out and buy a different brand of DVD-R's at Office Depot, thinking the laptop just wasn't really into these DVD's anymore. I ended up buying TDK DVD-R's. The computer seemed to like these more because it didn't eject them when I placed them into the drive.
OS X :: Unable To Find External Disk?
Apr 27, 2010I got a 500GB WD external disk for my MBP 2.2GHZ/2GB/500GB which with up-dated Snow Leopard and Windows XP pro(Boot camp). Here's wot happened and my probs:Last Tuesday I used the external disk with no problem. But on Friday the external disk is unable to be founded by MBP either in Disk Utility or Finder. I tried to switch to Windows XP where I installed MacDrive to read Mac partition under windows. The system says it cannt install the disk coz device unrecognizable. First I suspect it 's the problem with external disk enclosure but when I replaced it with another new one, problem stay still.
So here's some questions, First, is there any instruction I can take to solve the issue, or if the disk unfortunately crashed any possible chance I can rescue the data (My vital working data achieve is inside) using application or else.
OS X :: Unable To Repair Disk Permissions?
Aug 21, 2010When I open Disk Utility and select one of the 2 volumes in the left pane, the buttons "Verify disk permissions" and "Repair disk permissions" remain greyed out. Only the "Repair disk" and "Verify disk" buttons are enabled. This is not the startup Volume. For this volume all 4 buttons are enabled.
How can I repair the disk permissions on the volume?

Feb 13, 2008I recently (obviously) purchased a MacAir. While on the whole I'm pretty happy, right now, I am having a problem with the remote disk feature. I was able to migrate most of my information from the Mac desktop, but now, I am unable to access DVD's on the desktop. Networks are fine, the MacAir "sees" the other three computers on the wireless network, and I can log into them fine. I have enabled sharing and Remote Disk. The mounted Remote Disk in Finder on the MacAir shows the desktop, and the volume name of the DVD. Then it says "the operation cannot be completed because the original item for "(DVD or CD volume name)" cannot be found" I've tried this with both applications I wanted to install from DVD, as well as date DVD's containing pdf's but no applications.

I will notice the system start to slow down, I will have Onyx verify startup disk and it tells me to repair it. I will boot to SL DVD, repair the disk and it will run fine for awhile but eventually end up in the same situation. Do I need to reinstall SL or is this a hardware issue?

Jan 3, 2011I've created a Snow Leopard boot disk using this method link. I created it on a 16GB CF Disk. I've tried it twice. First time I formatted the disk as eXfat with 1 partition. Next time I used Mac OS Extended for a 7Gig partition and fat32 for the rest.
Upon boot I get the normal install stuff like I do with the DVD, but then no hard disk shows up. I thought it was because of the eXfat which is why I tried again. I looked into the system profiler and I can see my seagate hard disk, but under disk utility it doesn't exist. My Sata DVD drive shows up though. If I boot off of the DVD I can see and install to my hard disk.
I'm trying to make a USB Disk because I'm planning on getting a SSD and I will be removing the Dvd drive.
This is a Mid 2009 Macbook.

what would you think is a better set-up,
3x internal drives (all of the same model, probably WD 640's) set in raid 0 (both serve as boot drive and scratch disk) occupying bays 1, 2, and 3. In this set-up, everything (DVD's, music, photos, final cut media) would be stored on this array.

Jan 6, 2009for the past month or so my automated backups with time machine/time capsule have not been working. Every so often the following error message pops up:
"the backup disk image could not be mounted"
in troubleshooting, i have tried to mount the sparsebundle image directly but without success. from reading around a bit i can see that others have had this problem, and that one solution is to delete the sparsebundles and start again.
but that of course means losing all my archived backups, which i would rather avoid.

Feb 5, 2009I'm trying to copy from my Vista hard drive to my Mac hard drive. I'm getting rid of the Vista machine.
I took out the hard drive from the Vista and put it in an external enclosure that is USB attached to my Mac. The Mac is unable to read the drive.
I thought that leopard was able to read NTFS file systems?
It acts as if it doesn't even understand the partition table format on the drive.
Is there a simple way to get this to work? Does NTFS-3G help reading the partition table?

Feb 23, 2009I am trying to partition my current HardDrive so I can run a Macintosh on half of it. The other half will of coarse be windows. I've tried programs like BasiliskII and SoftMac, neither work.
I grabbed some spare 10.4 disks I had, and my computer refused to read them. So I got my hands on a different set of 10.4 install disks and my computer still refused to read them.
I am trying to do this because it's a project for my Computer Hardware class. I've spent way too much time on this without any progress.

May 10, 2009I usually just turn off my monitor at night but for some reason, the HD constantly makes spinning noise even then the computer hasn't been used for hours ( i don't run time machine ).
Is there any way to tell what process is causing this stupid HD activity? My previous Dell machine was so much more quiet than this POS. I prefer not having to explicitly put the machine the sleep every time.

OS X :: Unable To Partition External Hard Disk - How To Fix It
Sep 28, 2009My intention is to partition an external HD in half allowing it to serve as a backup for a pc running windows xp, and the other half as a backup for a mac(10.5. I am using a Seagate external HD(new) that was initially partitioned on a windows xp computer.
The 1st half of the 1TB HD was formatted in NTFS format, and the second half was erased and (I thought) reformatted in HFS plus but when I attempt to use CCC(Carbon Copy) to copy the mac 1/2 of the hard drive, I get this message:
"You may have difficulty booting from this target volume, the underlying disk is not formatted with a partitioning scheme that Apple recommends for Intel Macs."
I have read the recommendations that the external HD need to be partitioned with APM or GPT, but I cannot seem to get to that option now for the mac side of the external HD.
In the Disk Utility, the external HD shows both sections of the partitioned drive(the xp section and the leopard). I do not want to reformat the entire drive(both sections) if at all possible.
I just want the Mac side of the ext drive to be properly prepared for CCC, and the windows side to remain as is.
Windows On Mac :: Unable To Boot From The Installation Disk
Nov 15, 2009My problem is that when I try to boot to the XP installation disk, I get the very fast, flashing, gray apple, followed by a question mark folder, followed by the ghostbuster symbol, without the ghost.
The disc keeps spinning, but the windows installation screen never appears.
I'm new to installing windows with boot camp.
Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?
OS X :: Unable To Create The Necessary Partition In Disk Utility
Nov 19, 2009I have a Mac Mini and on the internal drive I have Snow Leopard installed on the first partition and I'd like to install Snow Leopard Server on the same drive on another partition (I'm new to Mac, this is my only machine and my only drive, and this is only for testing purposes, so don't bother with stupid questions about why etc).
The problem I have is that I can't seem to create the necessary partition in Disk Utility. I have shrinken the Snow Leopard partition to get some free space and I've created a second partition for Server but for some reason I can't choose the options button to select GUID. The button is grayed out, see attached image.
What am I doing wrong? Or is it not possible to have two OS partitions on the same internal drive?
