View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to get a battery backup for my PowerMac G5 dual 1.8ghz PPC, but the numbers confuse me. the UPS selector tool on APC's website suggests I can get away with one that runs at 800VA.i dont need it to last long, I'm really just looking for something that will protect from surges, condition the power, and give me enough time to shut down in case of a power outage. I wouldnt need more than a few minutes, and I dont expect more than a few minutes power supply.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have got a macbook pro with 2.2 ghz AMD 6750 graphics card. Its around 8 months old. The battery used to last around 4 hours but recently I get around only 2 hours. I have tried to change settings in energy saver to improve battery life but its still the same. I ve noticed that when it shows AMD graphics in about my mac, it takes more battery life. So, I guess its using more battery at that time. Ive read it switches automatically depending on the task but is there anyway to change it in settings?
Also, how is it possible to get the best possible battery life? Should I keep charging and discharging it every now and then.? Currently I unplug the adapter as soon as it gets fully charged and the battery last for over 2 hours (surfing, listening to music, half an hour of video).

I am getting the following error from Time Machine when doing my first backup. The startup disk being backed up, and the TM disk are both the same size.
Macintosh HD: 465.44 (total); 393.99 (free); 71.45 (free)
Time Machine: 465.44 (total); 465.29 (free)
The Time Machine error is: Quote:
"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 472.7 GB but only 465.3 GB are available." why would this be? Other disks are excluded from the backup, and Time Machine is telling me that it needs more space than it actually needs. What should I do?
I have ordered a new imac with 2TB hd option. I wanted to know what people are using for a backup drive. I dont intend to partition the internal drive and have a lot of content and thats why i ordered a 2TB drive. To backup i am assuming at least 4TB external drive would be required.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'd be interested in hearing what people are doing about backup with their huge iMac drives. Time Machine needs a drive somewhat bigger than their iMac HD, but not many of us want to shell out $500+ for 4T backup drive. I've been thinking of partitioning the iMac and backing up only one, smaller volume via Time Machine. Anyone else doing that?

the PRAM battery clearly is failing fast. After two assurances from a large local computer seller/repairer (Best Buy) that they could indeed go to her apartment, and after acquiring the correct battery for her, I have now found out that they won't go to her apartment because the computer is more than six years old. Dead end there! Does anyone know of a place in New York City (or an individual) that would both visit her apartment and be sufficiently conversant with the innards of such an old Mac that there would be a good chance that the battery will be replaced without harming the computer? There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it besides the failing PRAM battery, but Barbara is willing to pay handsomely to have her baby fixed, even if it means having the person go over it with a fine-tooth comb and charging accordingly. The computer is extremely heavy, or I'd take it in to the Best Buy store myself, and though we could get it into a taxi (with help from a doorman), there is the problem of getting it into the store and downstairs, where the repair area is. I'm strong but probably, not strong enough to do it, and we don't know anyone who could help. Any thoughts? There are multitudes of repair places and individual repairers in NYC, and many who visit people's apartments, but we clearly need someone who knows very old iMacs intimately and is not afraid to approach the problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a 1 TB backup HD from my iMac. I like this because its small in size but has the storage space I want. Like the idea of the USB drive so I can just move it when I need to, to another machine with ease. But is this like a typical external HD for storage, where you can just drag and drop entire folders into it, w/o having to use any kind of firmware and you must run it in backup mode? I basically want a small HD like the Passport that I can just drag entire folders into w/o the need for any dedicated software or controls. How is the life expectancy in this little guy, is it like the Time Capsules that roll over a die far too often or do they last a good while? I have an old Maxtor External 320 GB HD that's going on 8 years old.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm buying a iMac i7 with 2tb HD and am thinking to go with a Time Capsule for backup. Can I just run the backup periodically, keeping it turned off most of the time? I see that the product lasts about 18 months, so I should get much more use if that 18 months were due to continuous running, and I only turn it on when needed. I'm sure it will be a few years before I ever get close to using 2 TB if ever, in that sense, would it be better to buy a 1 TB Time Capsule over a 2TB simply because of the longevity issues & my backup requirements, not to mention the expense?
