Desktops :: CRT IMac Battery - Failing Fast
Jul 13, 2010
the PRAM battery clearly is failing fast. After two assurances from a large local computer seller/repairer (Best Buy) that they could indeed go to her apartment, and after acquiring the correct battery for her, I have now found out that they won't go to her apartment because the computer is more than six years old. Dead end there! Does anyone know of a place in New York City (or an individual) that would both visit her apartment and be sufficiently conversant with the innards of such an old Mac that there would be a good chance that the battery will be replaced without harming the computer? There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it besides the failing PRAM battery, but Barbara is willing to pay handsomely to have her baby fixed, even if it means having the person go over it with a fine-tooth comb and charging accordingly. The computer is extremely heavy, or I'd take it in to the Best Buy store myself, and though we could get it into a taxi (with help from a doorman), there is the problem of getting it into the store and downstairs, where the repair area is. I'm strong but probably, not strong enough to do it, and we don't know anyone who could help. Any thoughts? There are multitudes of repair places and individual repairers in NYC, and many who visit people's apartments, but we clearly need someone who knows very old iMacs intimately and is not afraid to approach the problem.

Originally my iMac G5 (1.6 GHz 17 inch) was failing to boot up. It would get to the grey screen and the apple and it would just stay there and pretend to be a rocket ship with it's little fan whirring as fast as it could after five minutes. So I reset the SMU, fan stopped, still wouldn't boot. Booted it off the 10.5 install cd (which it was running fine until it wouldn't start up). It wouldn't see the Macintosh HD for a while unless you went to disc utility > partitions and changed it from current to one and instead of applying just let it sit there before switching it back to current. Took about 10 minutes of sitting there.
I did disk repair said there was no problem. Disk permission repair said there was a few problems and said it repaired them. To be safe I backed everything up using target disk mode (where the fan tried to play rocket again even though I reset the SMU), erased my hard drive and reinstalled. Now it shuts down randomly when it goes idle, and takes 10 minutes to start up past loading the dock to load the apple bar Mac HD icon and whatever is on the desktop (which is a single empty folder).

I bought my iMac about 2 1/2 years ago. The mouse I got with it (mighty mouse? $50) has constant problems re getting dirty & failing to scroll properly. As I have discovered on Apple's own site, this problem is not rare. For a while I could turn it upside down & just play with the scroll button till whatever was stymieing it resolved itself. But now it won't scroll down at all (other directions OK). Based on the Apple reviews I am reluctant to replace it with the same model. Is the Magic Mouse ($70) a better value? What are the advantages? Or would I better better off getting a cheaper non-Apple mouse? I'm not into having to do a lot of regular maintenance or popping the mouse open to clean it. I also think a $50 or $70 mouse should not be "disposable".

I'm worried about too much heat and wearing out fans in both the card and my Mac.Below are the conditions, but first:
-Is it normal for this kind of card to run ALL the time? How do I know if it's acting correctly?
-Given the heat and fan speed info below, are my Mac and internal drives OK?
-Am I risking any breakdowns? Due to heat or fans running too much... or?
-Do all graphics cards cause the fans to run like this? Is there a cooler card out there?
-Suggestions to lessen the heat effects... or for another alternative?
Condition:

I get the whole part about that I set my laptop to go to sleep in 5 minutes, and if I close the lid it'll go to sleep, and the little light at the bottom starts to pulse, etc. But in sleep mode, my battery seems to drain extremely fast!
For my old Gateway M275 laptop while in sleep mode, it would probably lose about 5-7% of it's battery in a day's duration. With my MacBook Air, I just came back to it tonight after a day's worth of sleeping, and my battery was down to 16% from 29%. And to check, it was indeed sleeping!

Recently I've been noticing that my MacBook Pro's battery has been draining really fast. It's draining about 5% every 7 minutes. The battery condition is normal and it only has about 290 cycles on it. My brightness is turned all the way down, bluetooth is off and the only application I have open is Google Chrome, and I'm only using it to do some light browsing. Does anyone have this same problem? I have a MacBook Pro (mid-2010) running the latest version of Lion?

I bought my white Macbook less than two years ago, and updated to Lion last summer. But I recently found that the battery goes down very fast, it could be down to 50% within an hour even though it has just been charged. And for the laptop itself, it gets hot very easily! What's the problem of my Macbook?

I get my first macbook yesterday. Loving it! Got the White model, the first refresh of the year, just before this june refresh, buy I don't care.
So, here's the deal. I gonna use this machine 80% of the time in my home, not gonna move it from the desktop. So I'm using right now without battery, connected to the macsafe. Should I keep it that way? or I need to put the battery? Because I heard that if the battery is always there and the macbook is connected to magsafe, the battery die fast. I also don't know if that I'm doing is safe for the Macbook, to say without batery.
When I first remove the batery, something really strage felt off the macbook, was like a tiny tiny tiny little metal, works well without it, but I want to be sure that's nothing importante.

My battery was at 100%, but I unplugged it for about 15 minutes while I was still working and it was at 96%. I plugged it back in, but it won't charge. It says battery is charged instead of __ until charged. Why won't it charge, and why does it die so fast? Screen brightness is all the way down and I'm only using firefox and word.

I have noticed that my battery seems to be draining fast while the macbook is sleeping.
Its a blackbook, core duo, 2gb ram.. According to iStat Pro my health is 92% and the cycle count is 102.
Earlier today the battery was at 80% i just opened the mac up to write a email and closed it right back.. about 3 hours later the battery dropped down to 76%..
Seems kind of hight 4% for 3hours.

My last battery popped, and on Monday, Apple store gave me a new one. The lady told me that it was best not to keep the power connected all the time. So I charged it to 100% and pulled the plug. It runs down incredibly fast. This morning it's been unplugged for almost an hour, doing just a bunch of web searches, and it's already down to 37%. This isn't normal, is it? I was able to watch a 2 hour movie on a full charge for my old battery. Does the charge get better over time?

I purchased a Macbook Air 2011 in December. It came with Lion preinstalled and it is up-to-date. Sometimes I experience excessive battery drains when the computer is asleep (lid closed), i.e. 40%-50% battery charge gone overnight.
This is not an expected behavior. The battery seems to perform well when the system is running, i.e. it last for 5-6 or more hours, so I think the problem is with the sleep mode. How can I diagnose sleep problems? Is this due to WiFi or running programs?

I use first-gen unibody 15 inch Macbook Pro. I rarely shutdown and leave it sleep. However, sleeping somehow drains battery quite much. For example, after one day of sleep, my battery goes from 100% to about 60%. My previous Santa Rosa macbook pro never did this. My current setting is sleep and hibernate. I checked it in SmartSleep.

After installing the update for Mac OS (10.7.4) my battery starts too drain too fast. As usual after 100% charge my laptop showing me time near 5 or 6 hours. Of course I understand that this number is relevant, but i always get this numbers when using not so heavy apps (Safari, Mail, Pages, Twitter and iTunes), but now i can see only 2 or 3 hours. After long searches i found the problem. My MacBook Pro 15 inch have problem with graphic-card changing, it always changes to AMD Radeon card when I start Twitter or Reader! I think that Twtitter is not so heavy app that must use diskrete grpahic-card. And because I always run Twitter in background my MacBook Pro's battery drains in a few hours.

my iMac has been running strong for about 9 months now. The only gripe i have had is that is has begun to get SLOW booting up and mundane tasks such as opening apps. iTunes takes a good minute to get up and going. I never even noticed the slowness until i got a MacBook with much worse specs that blew it away.
So I decided to run TechTool Deluxe and see what happened. My iMac did great until the Volume Structure. I repaired it a good five times. The last two times it couldn't find anything to fix and it is still failing!
I don't want to have to buy DiscWarrior (i think thats right), or reformat my drive, mainly because i haven't the foggiest on how to do that. Any options available to me besides these? And do you think the slowness is more due to a growing amount of files, or maybe even a *virus* *gasp*, or to the failing structure?

I have a fairly new iMac that I upgraded to Snow Leopard a few months ago. It seemed to me that prior to that my external HD worked fine with Time Machine. Since then it is recognized for a short period of time when I connect it, then it disappears. I replaced it with a WD My Book. It worked perfectly for a month and now it has shut down. Has anybody had run into this before? I can't believe that every hard drive fails within a month in the same mysterious way!

I have a mid 2011 27" iMac (the one with thunderbolt) and the display is starting to fail after 1 year of average use (an hour of use every day on average). The display is now much dimmer on the left half of the display (the GPU sits underneath that portion) and also flickers the whole display now and then to a lower brightness.I am about 45 days out of warranty and basically will have to cough up $500 to have it fixed by Apple.Has anyone else ever had this happen to them? The genius bar employee thought that it was something he has seen happen to displays when exposed to heat over long periods of time.So basically playing starcraft 2 and doing video encoding killed my display if you believe that to be the cause. Are there any conditions in which apple would recognize this as a manufacturing defect and fix it free of charge? Otherwise it looks like im writing a check for $500 next week.

Specifically the hard drive fan runs at 1600rpm and the optical fan always runs at 1350 rpms.
Those fans run faster than my 2007 24" 2.4ghz iMac.
Somehow I figured with the cooler running ddr3, 9400M igpu and better cpu architecture that this new 2009 20" iMac would be dead silent because the fans would barely have to run. Or at least be less noisey.
But that's not the case.
Anyone have any fan speeds to report on new iMacs? Particularly the 20" model?
Download the iStat Pro widget and report your fan speeds today!

I have an rev. A iMac G5 that was purchased in January of 2005. The applecare has long expired. However, in May of 2008 due to factory defect Apple replaced the logic board, power supply and super drive [URL]. In December 2008 after experiencing problems with my hard drive I took my computer to the apple store. There they said it was dying and it would be cheaper to replace it myself. After purchasing a seagate hdd [URL] my computer won't recognize it. It stays at the black screen while the power light glows. After a few minutes the fans kick in at full force. I tested the hdd in another iMac G5 rev. B and it works fine. Any ideas on what the problem is or how to resolve it?

Before the 10.7.4 update the WIFI connection from the iMac 21.5" to the airport extreme router works fine!
Now it's failing several times a day! it looses the wifi connection and you are unable to see any wireless accesspoints or SSID's
Macbook pro, iphone & ipad + PC's still works fine!Â
The only way to get the wireless up and working again is to shutdown and restart the iMac.Â
In the log i can see alot, don't know if this is some clue or error occuring just after the wireless connection is dropped for unknown reasons.Â
"kernel: 2329.723808: ath_chan_set: unable to reset cannel XX (XX00Mhz) flags 0x10080 hal status 17"
"kernel: 2632.354892: ASSERT: Can not reenter VAP State Machine"
"kernel: AirPort: Link Down on en1. Reason 8 (Disassociated because station leaving)."Â
Turning off and on the wireless interface only shows the following in the log, and the wifi will not see any SSID's : "kernel: 71847.200440: switchVap from 1 to 1" Â

IMac late 2009, Os X 10.8.3. 8GB RAM. IPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPad mini. iCloud calendar only. Nothing defined On my Mac.
I sync between the mobile devices and iCloud without problems (Mostly Calendar & Notes). Over the last year I have had occasions when my Mac Calendar failed to update with the message "The server is currently not reachable or the connection was blocked). Sometimes the problem went away and Calendar resumed normal syncing. It has been off-line now for 2 weeks.
I have deleted and recreated the icloud calendar in Calendar >Preferences>Accounts. I have unchecked Calendar in System Preferences>Mail, Contacts&Calendars>iCloud and rechecked it. I have created a Google calendar as a test and it is being imported and displayed by Calendar on my mac.

I recently bought a 1st generation 500GB Time Capsule as I don't need the dual-band functionality of the 2nd Generation. Since setting it up I've been having a problem, whenever my iMac sleeps from a long period of time the backup is delayed when I wake the computer up. This would be less irritating if the backups continued like normal after the computer was awake, but I have to keep re-starting the backups manually to get the backup schedule back on track. This is especially frustrating as the whole point of the system is so I don't have to worry about manual backups.
