I have ordered a new imac with 2TB hd option. I wanted to know what people are using for a backup drive. I dont intend to partition the internal drive and have a lot of content and thats why i ordered a 2TB drive. To backup i am assuming at least 4TB external drive would be required.
View 7 RepliesI'm looking for a 1 TB backup HD from my iMac. I like this because its small in size but has the storage space I want. Like the idea of the USB drive so I can just move it when I need to, to another machine with ease. But is this like a typical external HD for storage, where you can just drag and drop entire folders into it, w/o having to use any kind of firmware and you must run it in backup mode? I basically want a small HD like the Passport that I can just drag entire folders into w/o the need for any dedicated software or controls. How is the life expectancy in this little guy, is it like the Time Capsules that roll over a die far too often or do they last a good while? I have an old Maxtor External 320 GB HD that's going on 8 years old.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am unable to move files from a 250 GB backup hard drive to a 1.0 TB b/c I keep getting the warning that isn’t enough space. Get Info says that 999.72 GB on it are in use. But the 1.0 TB was almost empty. If I add up the space of each of the 3 or 4 items on it, I get less than 20GB. What’s taking up the other 979 GB?For background, I now have iMac backed up with LaCie 2Big NAS system. The 250 GB is primarily to hold iPhoto Library and backup copies of original photos. the 250 GB is full. So I am trying to switch over from 250 to the 1.0 TB for photos. Moved a few smaller files over, but then could move no more. Thought of running disk utility to erase the 1.0 TB, but now I can’t move the few files on it back to 250 GB, but of error message that it too is full.I did run Repair Disk on 1.0TB before started trying to move files.

I just got a new MacBook Pro for graduation. I've decided to use my iMac as an external display and use my Macbook Pro as my main computer. My iMac has about 1TB of space while my MacBook has about 500 GB. Since I'll be using my iMac primarily as a external display I was thinking about also using it as an external harddrive so I can backup my data from my Macbook via Time Machine.Is this ok to do? Does anyone advised that I don't? I just want to make sure I don't screw up anything before doing so. BTW I also have a WD external harddrive connected to my iMac.

I have an iMac desktop with OS X version 10.9.4 Mavericks operating system. Processor 2.06 core 2 duo Memory 4GB 1067 MHx startup disk hard drive.
Problem is I deleted some photos from my hard drive to free up space, thinking I could access them from my backup drive if I needed to. However, when I try to get the photos through my TimeMchine backup drive, it won't let me, saying it's not the original library. How do I access my old backed up photos?

View 6 Replies View RelatedHad a quick question. I'm on my third 27" stock 3.06Ghz imac that was replaced yesterday. The good news is that so far it doesn't seem to have any of the problems of my previous two 27" imac's. There is one thing though. A couple of seconds after pressing the power button to bootup there is a brief mechanical sound from the dvd drive like a quick ejecting sound even though there is no cd in the drive. My first 27" imac dvd drive made the sound but the second imac 27" Imac I had didn't. Is this sound normal? Would be curious to know why two out of the three 27" Imac's I had make that noise.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using a 20" white intel iMac and cannot manage to remove a linux boot disc from the optical drive.At first, the only way that i managed to boot to the linux disc in the first place was from the Startup Disk menu in OSX. I could not even get to the Startup Manager ('opt' at boot) or boot straight to the disc ('C').Now i'm in a position where no matter what i do, the system boots to the linux disc. I cannot even force the startup into OSX to try to eject the disc from there. I've tried holding all of these keys/combinations at startup

The intel iMac was made in late 2006 and the iMac G3 was made in 1999, 1998 or 2000.
So i have the new I7 Imac. I have a Duet and a Powered G drive. The Duet takes firewire 400 and the GDrive takes fire wire 800. But my imac only has one firewire 800 port.am i able to run my duet daisy chain off my g drive?

I've swapped my iMac's optical drive twice since it originally failed three months out of warranty. My first replacement was a UJ-875. My latest replacement was a UJ-225 Blu-ray reader. Here's the thing:
When attempting to insert discs, both drives failed to "grab" it and pull it into the iMac. The bezel of the iMac is so thick that I would lose the disc inside without the optical drive actually taking hold and loading the disc. With the tip of a pen I was able to push the disc in another few millimeters and it would grab and load up without issue. Both drives functioned flawlessly once I got the disc in there.
So...What is Apple doing to customize their drives so that they "grab" earlier rather than later? Is this a mechanical adjustment that can be made on the optical drive? I'm rather surprised that I've been unable to find anything like this on the web.
Just out of curiosity, is a UPS battery backup needed for my imac?It has a surge protector now but I am wondering if I should get a UPS for it.

Time Machine needs a drive somewhat bigger than their iMac HD, but not many of us want to shell out $500+ for 4T backup drive. I've been thinking of partitioning the iMac and backing up only one, smaller volume via Time Machine. Anyone else doing that?

Does anyone have any recommendations on an online backup service. I do have a backup external drive that backups my iMac but I am really thinking about paying for an online service. I think I will feel more secure knowing that if something happens to my computer all my data is replaceable.

My problem is time machine now says I don't have enough space for a backup. The iMac has a new hard drive so I am not sure what is going on. I could always Format and restart TM but I am not real happy about trying that. It will be may last resort.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm buying a iMac i7 with 2tb HD and am thinking to go with a Time Capsule for backup. Can I just run the backup periodically, keeping it turned off most of the time? I see that the product lasts about 18 months, so I should get much more use if that 18 months were due to continuous running, and I only turn it on when needed. I'm sure it will be a few years before I ever get close to using 2 TB if ever, in that sense, would it be better to buy a 1 TB Time Capsule over a 2TB simply because of the longevity issues & my backup requirements, not to mention the expense?
