Desktops :: IMac G5 Spits Out All Blank DVDs?
Dec 19, 2009Whenever I insert a blank DVD there's a long pause and it spits it out again, nearly every time. There's no dialog, no message, no reaction from the OS of any kind.
On the rare occasions when it accepts a disk, everything after that is fine. I can burn DVDs no problem. The DVDs are a variety of different types (all DVD-R), from reliable brands.
I've tried rebooting, changing the settings in System Preferences, quitting all applications except the Finder, but nothing has made any difference.

Jul 10, 2009I have had my macbook pro just over a year with no problems. Now I am trying to burn a folder with work in it (indesign, etc) but when I put a blank cd or dvd-r in, it is not recognized. It doesn't spin, no noise, etc. I have tried clicking on the folder and choosing the "burn this folder" option, but the result is the same. Music and data CD's are recognized. I already have an appt. with the genius bar, but I'd really like to avoid the hassle if possible. I just did all firmware updates and software updates.

Apr 18, 2012I am having trouble burning DVDs. MBP 10.6.8 Never had any problem till about a week ago. I insert a known blank Sony DVD-R, the drive seems to shutter a bit more than it has in the past then the disk icon shows up on the desktop as usual. Add items, hit burn, 1 second later error message Untitled DVD cant be burned because the disc is read-only and cant be modified (error code 0x80020042), disk ejects. When I look under "About this Mac" >Disc Burning and insert a new known blank Sony DVD-R, hit refresh, and look under Media: Blank: shows NO, Erasable: shows NO, Overwritable shows No, but Appendable: show Yes. To make matters more cloudy CDs burn just fine and I can read all expected medias. Only odd thing I have done in this time period was set the computer to book into 64-bit.

Jun 27, 2012I purchased a Mac Mini about 2 months ago and was making DVD backups with a Samsung SE-S084D external drive. The first ones went OK, but now the system suddenly stopped recognizing blank DVDs... the drive reads all other discs unless the ones that are blank. It keeps saying The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.Â

MacBook Pro :: Can No Longer Read DVDs Or CDs
Mar 21, 2012I am running OSX 10.7.3. Yesterday all my thousands of fonts completely disappeared from Suitcase Fusion 2. I was told by Extensis that I could not get them back, but that I needed to upgrade to Fusion 3 which would be compatible with Lion. I did that. When I tried to get my stored fonts off the CDs and DVDs I'd stored them on all the CDs appeared to be blank and I got a message on the DVD that it cannot be read on my computer. (I have used all these CDs and DVDs before.)Â

Apr 4, 2012I held back from upgrading to LION, but recently installed it in a partition on my MacBook Pro (15 inch, late 2008). The OS is now updated to Lion 10.7.3.Since the instation and upgrade some of my video DVDs are not playing. My DVDs are all Region 2 PAL. I'm based in London, England.Specifically, my Shaun the Sheep collection are not being detected or mounting in the superdrive. Other DVDs are unaffected and play just fine.
I've a second partition on the hard drive with Snow Leopard installed, but when I tried the DVDS on that they no longer worked either though had previously been fine on that OS.Should I stop thiinking of playing them on the MacBook Pro?

Apr 14, 2008Apple is investigating problems with its new Penryn-based Intel notebooks that cause flickering and graphics corruption during media playback and web browsing.
The two issues have been widely reported by users of the company's latest 13-inch MacBooks and 15-inch MacBook Pros, both of which began shipping in February.
In particular, users on the Apple discussion forums say (1, 2, 3, 4) that QuickTime playback of video files is routinely marred by flickering or the appearance of "washed out" graphics on their new machines.
"When I am watching the Video Tutorials for any of Apple products my QT flickers dark and light, not to the point where I can't see the video, but to the point where it is annoying," one user wrote.
"Exact same problem here," replied several others.
Meanwhile, the same batch of users are also reporting instances of graphics corruption on their machines when scrolling through Safari webpages or Mail messages -- both of which rely on Apple's Webkit framework.
"My wife has got a current gen Macbook Pro that is exhibiting a very strange behavior," one user wrote in an AppleInsider forum thread on the subject. "When she's on battery power she gets graphical glitches/tearing when scrolling in a browser."
"I have a current generation [MacBook Pro] and I have the same problem," said another. "Also when loading web pages, often with pictures, the content in the active window flickers a lot."
Thus far, it appears the anomalies are the result of a software glitch rather than a flaw within hardware. Several users attempting to diagnose the problem on their own report that the issues became noticeable only after installing the Leopard Graphics update that was released alongside the recent Mac OS X 10.5.2 Update.
One user even went as far as to install a build of the still unreleased Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update -- which is said to include fixes for graphics corruption -- on his system to see if it remedied the issue. Although he claimed the upcoming update fixes the problem, another user performing the same kind of check reported that while 10.5.3 does indeed alleviate some symptoms, it "doesn't completely correct the issue."

For its part, Apple over the weekend formally acknowledged the issues for the first time in an email response to one customer.
"Apple has received reports similar to the behavior you are describing and we are investigating those reports," the company said. "Further information will come in the form of a Knowledge Base article, Software Update, or Software Release."
IMac :: Unable To Rip DVDs
Nov 22, 2010So I recently installed my 120gb OCZ Agility 2 SSD into my superdrive bay and using a USB DVD drive but here are my issues, I can't rip a full dvd in Handbrake (it will rip up to 25 minutes and tell me its complete) and I can't play DVDs using the DVD player program. Was there a different way to format the SSD and relocating the home folder to the original 1TB drive?

Jan 19, 2009I recently came back from a holiday to find that my CD/DVD drive on my intel iMac has stopped working properly. If i put any sort of CD or DVD in the slot in makes a few sounds a just pops it back out about 3 seconds later.
Any ideas on what i could try to get it working again. Maybe reinstalling firmware or something.

Jun 11, 2009I have an Intel IMAC, which is now out of warranty as I have had it for 16 months (and I was dumb enough not to get AppleCare). A few days back, my computer would not startup and everytime I hit the power button, I would hear some spinning noise but no chime from the iMAC. Yesterday, I tried it again and this time I heard the chime but the monitor did not start. I was then able to SSH into the MAC and see that it is indeed connected to the network and booted up, but the screen is still dead. Any ideas what I should do before the painful trip to the apple store ?

Dec 6, 2009Not even a week old!! Computer was asleep for about 2 days, woke it up the same way with a few taps on the keyboard and it just started to beep. Tried to turn it off but nothing. Nothing on the screen, just beeping. Pushed the power button and beeping. Unplugged it and waited 5 minutes and pushed power button and beeping with nothing on screen. Its sunday and it hurts my stomach to think about the lengthy process this will be to get a new one or get it fixed. My wife says to call, but I tell her that if there even isn't anything on the screen then what can they do over the phone. Is it possible the memory went bad. What would cause this? Its plugged in a power strip.

Dec 16, 2009Okay so last night I was trying to burn a file with Disk Utility, as soon as I put the DVD in I heard it was making a little noise (most likely because there was dirt on it - I wasn't thinking properly). When it started to burn, I could hear it make noise....I didn't want to risk not having a smooth burn so I cancelled it, then tried to eject it......to no prevail.
I've tried everything in the book.......from repeatedly pressing the eject button on the keyboard, to restarting while holding down the mouse button, to tilting it on its side and let gravity do its job, to lightly smacking the back part of it........nothing is working
When I do try and eject it, I've noticed it makes 2 different sounds....1st one is, imagine the sounds it makes when you put a CD in....and also taking it out, those 2 sounds very close to each other. 2nd one is sort of like the CD rubbing against something, like a bandsaw but on a low level. It wants to work but something is getting it caught.....
PowerPC :: IMac G3 Blank Drive Install
Jul 17, 2010I recently picked up an iMac G3 with a 600 MHz G3 Processor and a slot-loading CD-RW drive. It had 10.2.8 and 9.2.2 installed. I went into the startup disk menu in system preferences and tried to restart in 9.2.2 and be adventerous. But it would just flash a floppy disk with a ? mark. No matter what I did I could not get back to Mac OS X. I also have a MacBook with Tiger restore CDs. I tried to install that on there but could not and decided to see if it would work if I erased the drive. It did not. So now I have an iMac G3 with a blank hard drive and a Cd drive and a mind that is completely clueless about what to do!

Here�s what happens in greater detail. I quit or force quit all open applications. I press the ON/OFF button until the screen goes black. I wait several minutes and press the same button ON. I get the Apple cord sound and a blank white screen. The Apple icon does not come on; nothing happens. That�s when I close it down again and disconnect it from the back and reconnect it (a few seconds). Nov 4, 2009I did a pram reset but that did nothing (I heard the initial chime and the one after the reset....still the same problem.) I'm a bit worried because I don't hear the hard drive starting up.
Some more info... Intel Imac 17" (late 2006 model), 512 mb of RAM, running 10.4 (I think). I am not familiar troubleshooting macs but I am troubleshooting PCs.
