View 10 RepliesI use Toast to burn DVDs. But recently my MBP Superdrive has been refusing to play ball. Whenever I insert a DVD and set up Toast to start the burn, I get:
Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
Sense Code = 0x73, 0x0x
I also own an external DVD/CD drive (USB2) which I use with my little ASUS. So, I plugged my external drive into my Mac and tried Toasting again. But:
Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
So, either my Superdrive is fragged, or my external drive is fragged, or both. But the external works fine with my ASUS. And it sounds like a longshot both are fragged with the Mac. Maybe the DVDs I'm trying to burn to are fragged. Or it's a software glitch in Toast. Or....
my Superdrive is fragged for writing. Other posters have had problems with their Superdrives too. BUT my external is fine. So it must be either Toast or the DVDs, right?
When I try inserting blank (brand-new) CD+ or CD- and DVD+ or DVD- discs, the slot-drive seems to accept the disc just fine. But then. I hear 2 short "whirrs", nothing for about 10 seconds, 2 short "whirrs", nothing for about 10 seconds, 2 short "whirrs", then the disc is ejected.I have experimented w/different discs & get the same results each time: drive accepts the disc for about 30 seconds, never mounts it on desktop, then ejects it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently picked up an iMac G3 with a 600 MHz G3 Processor and a slot-loading CD-RW drive. It had 10.2.8 and 9.2.2 installed. I went into the startup disk menu in system preferences and tried to restart in 9.2.2 and be adventerous. But it would just flash a floppy disk with a ? mark. No matter what I did I could not get back to Mac OS X. I also have a MacBook with Tiger restore CDs. I tried to install that on there but could not and decided to see if it would work if I erased the drive. It did not. So now I have an iMac G3 with a blank hard drive and a Cd drive and a mind that is completely clueless about what to do!
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo my super drive is not able to write double layer dvd's, even though it's supposed to, as confirmed by the System Profiler. I'm using the right kind of blanks (DVD+R DL), tried different brands, and it always just stops with a "media writer error" right away. It recognizes them as writable disks when I insert them, but simply refuses to actually write.
It's the 17" G5 iSight model. Is there an easier way to fix this than to send the whole thing to Apple to have the drive replaced? Also, how much does it run for Apple to install a new super drive for me?
I got my Mac Pro about 1 week ago. I got the BTO of 2 super drives. Well, I just tried burning an ISO and when I put in a blank dvd it won't pick it up to burn the file. I have tried with Memorex DVD+R's and Sony DVD-R's. Neither will work. Now the weird thing is regular dvd's work, games, and even Windows 7. Also I have toast 10 and it will pick it up but when I choose ISO and drop the ISO in it, it then says it can't burn audio tracks or some warning.

I recently updated to iTunes 10.6.3. Since the update, I have been unable to burn CDs from any iTunes playlist. When I hit Burn, it asks me to insert a blank disc; I do; but then iTunes doesn't recognize that I have done so.Â
Strangely, I am able to burn the CD just fine in Toast Titanium, which did recognize the blank CD -- so the problem isn't with my SuperDrive. It seems as if iTunes isn't talking to the rest of the Mac.Â

so i go to turn my imac on tonight and it makes the normal noise when it always turns on but the screen stays blank(light blue)....after about 2 minutes this little picture of a folder with a question mark shows up in the middle of the screen. it keeps making this clicking noise as well. ive tried unplugging everything and restarting it here is a pic of what the thing that pop ups looks like [URL]
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with my internal SuperDrive where it is saying that blank DVD's are not writable. When I insert a blank disk the Mac recognises it is a blank disc as the Blank DVD Options box appears but when I actually go to burn a disk the burn will start then immediately fail saying the disk isn't writable. From Disk Utility I get the following info from a blank disk: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J:Firmware Revision:FEW7 Interconnect: [code] It doesn't matter what brand of disk I buy (have tried Verbatim, Bulkpaq, Sony, Tesco & Asda) I get the same issue. All these disks have then worked fine in my girlfriends PC (yuk!) laptop so I don't think it is the disks themselves that are at fault and the fact it is happening with different brands points to a problem with the drive rather than the disks. The drive seems to be working ok as it will play DVD's ok.

When using Final Cut Pro X (iMac mid 2011 model-version 10.1.3) to burn 1 hour movie onto DVD, it seems to render but when computer says 'Sharing to DVD successful' and yet DVD is blank, what's my next move? Burning hardware is working as I burned a project using iMovie afterwards. I filmed a funeral service and family get together afterwards but can't share it with family and friends...

a little history.
I live in Thailand and a couple of years ago passed on my iBook to my girlfriend who absolutely loves it. After a while the video went. I researched and learned about the dreaded bad soldering on the video chip. my GF was happy again! Although it will occasionally not work, a little pressing on the outside case usually brings it back.
Last week something else came along. The dreaded folder with question mark on start up. I am aware this often means the HD.
For the moment I'm going to assume it's a separate problem to the video chip as the ?FOLDER? is actually up on the screen (though I understand simple video like this may be in the firmware or something and may not come through the video per se.
My question is what would be a clever sequence to test the HD?
The disc drive is no good for ages. I have an extra HD in a case with USB. I was thinking of installing OSX on the extHD and trying a startup from that but a friend says the iBook needs Firewire. (Is that true?)
What I also have is a MacBook.
Can I use target mode or something and start up the iBook from the MacBook HD or the MacBook disc drive thus clarifying if the iBook HD is really a goner?
how do i do a diagnostic on the hd.
and is there a defragmenter like on pc's..sorry for that devil word.
So I've been passed an old ibook to see if I want to switch to a Mac.
it's an ibook 12" G4, 1.33Ghz with 512k RAM and a 40GB hard drive and runs Tiger. The HD seems okay, but the battery is shot - lasts for about 30 minutes. I've checked the serial in the battery upgrade programme and that's been done.
It seems to me, it might go another year of useful life if it had additional memory and maybe an upgrade to Leopard.
But before I commit money to the project, do any of you have any advice on what else to check on the machine, and how to go about it? Crucial RAM for this model is a bit expensive for what it is, and Leopard seems tricky to get hold of.
Someone is selling me a powerbook, but I want to find out what the harddrive rpm speed is, they don't know what it is. Is there anyway to check using system profiler or something?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've got a 15in aluminium powerbook, a couple of years old. So far I've had nearly everything go wrong with it. replaced screen, knackered hd, ram port failiure, and a battery that lasts 10 minutes.
I recently replaced the harddrive, as the standard issue one packed up a few times. I followed the instructions on ifixit.com website. To my delight I actually managed to do it, and the pb worked well for a few weeks. Then suddenly, the screen froze and faded to white. So far I've tried everything -
Resetting the pmu. Resetting the pram and nvram. Opened it up to check I reconnected everything.
and checked to see if the hd is still working starting it up from another computer, and it works fine. Everythings still there. Someone also said if you hold 'R' key down on start up it resets the lcd.
BUT STILL BLANK!!!!!!!!!
The screen still seems to turn black after a little while, indicating the energy saver is still on. I'm thinking I may have dislodged an lcd connection or something?
i have a powermac g5 dual 1.8 tower. the dvd burner is a pioneer dvd-rw dvr-107d. according to the system profiler, this should be able to burn either - or +R discs and cds. also, the computer belonged to a friend who was using it to burn dvds up until the day she delivered it to me.
i switched out the harddrive and reinstalled everything fresh (in case that matters.)
now when i put in a blank dvd or cd (different brands, different formats) it comes up with an error message that says: This disc cannot be used because it is not recognized.
I bought a Powerbook G4 about 2.5 yrs ago, top of the line, new from an Apple Store and its been great. However over the last 2 months, its developed this habit of crashing/sleeping/going blank while it Itunes is streaming music, and/ or while Safari is up. Last night it did it while I was recording a Live DAT into garage band. I used to be able to hit the space bar or any key, and it would come back briefly, crash, repeat etc until I restarted. Now however, its just suddenly black. nothing. All I can do is take the battery out for a little while, wait, put it back in, and then restart. I've backed up everything as a precaution. I am diligent about uploading software updates, and I run MacJanitor from time to time...
I probably have 1200 songs, 15TV shows on Itunes, and 1000 pictures on iphoto, So I would hope my hard drive still has ample space.
I've got an 800Mhz iBook G4 (640MB RAM, latest update for Tiger 10.4) which has worked without a hitch for the last 2 years. Suddenly it has started going dead while in use - the screen goes completely blank (although the backlights are still on) and all sounds cease. It doesn't matter if the machine is idle, or playing World of Warcraft, or encoding a DVD in DVD Studio Pro. It is completely random. The only way to get out of it is to hold down the power button to force it to shut down. Powering up is also becoming difficult - 9 times out of 10 the machine boots but I get no startup sound. Instead the screen stays dark and the fan goes on full throttle, and nothing happens. Sometimes I can force it to shut down by holding down the power button, sometimes I need to take the battery out. When the machine does boot and I get back into OS X, sometimes it displays a message saying my clock and time/date are set before 2001 and I may have problems.
I understand this message comes up if you reset the power management unit, but on checking the time/date it is set correct. I have tried resetting the power management unit, but it doesn't make any difference. I have run the hardware test CD, and all items pass on the extended test. The iBook's battery is almost dead - this I know! But would that make any difference? With the time/date error that sometimes comes up on restart, it's almost like the internal battery that stores data like the time has run flat. Is this charged by the big battery? I haven't booted into open firmware, but I've read I can run the reset -nvram and reset-all commands from there (not sure what they do). It's not hardware, as the hardware test CD works. It doesn't seem to be a software error (although I haven't reinstalled OS X). Has my RAM gone bad or become unseated?
I had a good-running Powerbook G4 for several years until -- seemingly out of nowhere -- it started rejecting all new, blank CDs (DVDs as well). It still reads disks with data on them, but after a couple of seconds, ejects blank ones. I'm running OS 10.3.9 and do all the software updating.
I've tried re-starting, while holding the option key down, and some other things I picked up on the Internet, but to no avail.
My 2002 iBook G3 notebook with OS X3.9 started acting up on me finally! 2 days ago I turned it on and it sounds like it is starting up normally, but when the screen comes on, it just stays lit up and black - I tried everything, from trying to adjust the brightness, to restarting it a zillion times to completely draining the battery and then restarting it again, nothing seems to work right! I thought it may be the backlight, but then the light does come on, and stays on - the apple logo on the back stays lit up even when I close the notebook.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI came home for lunch today, and found my Mac Mini G4 with the fan running, and a blank screen. It was obviously locked up. System has 10.5.2 with all of the latest updates. This is not my primary system, I have an MBP for that.
Here is what I did:
Force a power off/on, and I get the normal gray screen with the Apple, and spinning gear, but it never stops spinning.
I have a G5 that has started intermittently booting up with a totally blank screen - not blue, no video at all. Sometimes on reboot or after resetting the PRAM it works again.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an Intel IMAC, which is now out of warranty as I have had it for 16 months (and I was dumb enough not to get AppleCare). A few days back, my computer would not startup and everytime I hit the power button, I would hear some spinning noise but no chime from the iMAC. Yesterday, I tried it again and this time I heard the chime but the monitor did not start. I was then able to SSH into the MAC and see that it is indeed connected to the network and booted up, but the screen is still dead. Any ideas what I should do before the painful trip to the apple store ?

Power is getting to the machine and a certain amount of whirring is heard but not the signature! as it starts. The screen remains blank and would stay like that all night if I let it. The only thing I did differently before this appeared was to take it to work in a different bag a few times. Rucksack before, Side bag (more vibration).

It also has the 7800gt video card.After I start it up it runs for about 15 minutes and then the display goes blank and the system fans go full out. I've tried resetting the PRAM, PMU, VRAM, all of those things...the last thing I have is the video card to test.Also the power supply was just replaced by a Apple Repair Center under extended warranty.

But when I restart, the computer seems to turn on fine but the screen remains dark.
