What is required to enable the burning of DVDs from a new iMac Retina (OS X 10.10.1)? Will an external Super Drive be adequate?

What's the matter with Apple, don't they know there is such things as DVDs . I have quite a lot of DVDs from my day's with a PC, but now I have a iMac I don't seem to be able to use them except for 1 time recording. Say for accounting , if I use the disc utility I cannot use them more than once and the same with Roxio Toast. If the backup is only 39mb that is an awful waste of a DVD to only use it once. Alternatively am I wrong with my approach's to use more than once?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to burn copies of dvds, like the second season of the office for example. On my PC we used DVDshrink to rip the dvd and then the same program would burn a copy on a blank dvd. I downloaded Mactheripper and ripped the dvd, and burned it using the burn folder in the finder. The first time the file was too large [ 7 something gb when the dvd is only 4] The second time I thought it worked but when I went to watch it it said "incorrect disc" I'm not sure if I'm doing somehting wrong of if there is a better program for ripping and shrinking the size of dvds?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having issues with burning data DVDs on my Mackbook Pro (running Snow Leopard) I'm burning large files (DVD/Blu-Ray rips) and the discs are unreliable. I'm trying to pinpoint the problem but haven't been able to. Some of the discs are not able to be read by the Mac - sometimes it spits the disc out a few seconds after being inserted...other discs just spin and spin and spin and it seems the Mac cannot read them - I can't even eject them without rebooting the computer. There seems to be no rhyme or reason between discs that read OK and discs that don't. Some discs were burned via the internal superdrive and some via a Sony USB dual layer burner. All discs burn and verify OK - there was no indication on any of them that anything went wrong. I am using Sony and Memorex discs, single and dual layer. Are there any known issues with either the Mac superdrive, or the burning of large (4+ GB - almost 8 GB) single files? I've got a good number of discs here and like I said all burned OK...but I've been having to go back to retrieve files and am only now finding that some of the discs are giving the problems described above, which means many of the backups I thought were legit are no good. Alternatively, if there is a better method for backing up these files . They are stored on hard drives being used by a streaming video player. I thought backing up each file to DVD would be a reliable backup method but apparently this is not the case. It's not ideal to back up to other hard drives - there are too many files and it would be too expensive. I don't know that online backups would be feasible because of the amount of time it would take to upload them and the space they would take up would likely be too expensive to maintain.

Mac Book Pro / 10.5.8 Impossible to burn DVD, it refuses to burn then ejects the DVD. (It's not the first time, the computer has already been fixed for a similar problem and it then didn't accept any DVD, even for playing). For the moment he can read. I've tried only Verbatim DVD+R or DVD-R. Through Toast Titanium 10.0 or not.

Notice that with CDs, all is right, burning and reading. It seems then not to be a "mechanical" problem. I'd like to know what does this code mean? How to fix? Can you tell me what to do and propose some solution?
I bought Roxio Toast Titanium 5.0 and downloaded the 5.2.1 update so I could burn some DVDs on my iMac (which is about 2 months old). I set it to record a video_ts file from one of the DVD discs that I've ripped to the hard drive. It records the files and verifies, then it says that the DVD was burned fine. The problem is that when I try it on any DVD player, the disc will not play. It won't play in a stand-alone DVD player, on the iMac nor on my PC. I checked what was burned, and all the files were recorded fine. I've gone through 6 discs with the same result. The only time it recorded anything viewable, was when I set it for "disc copy" and even then, the entire DVD was not recorded because of some error and when I popped it in the player, the portion that was recorded was very pixelated and unwatchable.
last week i tried burning a dvd using roxio toast, but before it began to burn it says the following error: the drive reported an error: sense key = medium error sence code = 0x73, 0x03 i tried to use another dvd, but it is saying the same error (i have been using the same brand of dvd before but never encountered such problems), so tried to restart, and it proceeded to burn, no more errors, so i thought it was only a one time thing, so today, i tried burning again, the same thing happen, the same error, i tried 4 dvd's but the same error keeps on happening, but when i restart the macbook pro, it would proceed to burn with no errors. i wonder what seems to be the problem? my dvd drive or the software? anyone encountered the same problem before?

But what I don't want is the smarmy "Themes" iDVD insist there be on the result. IS there a way I can do this without the Themes or will I have to use a different burner? Some videos I have are .avi, DVIX, .wmv, etc. I'm sure that the starting format has nothing to do with my problem, but one never knows. I'm running OSX 10.6.2 and am really happy with it. Although, I haven't see any difference when running it in 64-bit mode. But maybe if I were using more 64-bit software?

I am trying to burn movies from iPhoto to a dvd for backup. I have attempted to do the export to another file method, then burn to DVD, but whenever I try the export, I get a list of 20 video files that were not exported. This is the only method I have been able to find that is supposed to work for getting movies out of iphoto and onto a disc.

I was testing the pwpolicy on a newly upgraded Yosemite. After rebooting, I found my local admin account was disabled.
I ran the pwpolicy on a non-server version of Yosemite and the only support article I could find is OS X Server (Yosemite): Global policies can lock out Admin accounts - Apple Support. I tried to follow the steps in the article to clear the account policies for local admin, but once I entered "/usr/bin/pwpolicy -n /Local/Default clearaccountpolicies", the system seemed hanging there and the local admin account was still disable.
Actually once I used launchctl to load the com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist, the system started to show signs not working properly, such as some basic commands like ps, dscl, man, nano, or even ls stopping to bring up any results. However, "launchctl list" showed the daemon was launched with a number of 78.
I tried to create new admin user account by rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone, but the new admin account was disabled possibly immediately after birth because of the global policy settings.
I operate an iMac: v 10.6.8, 8 GB, and ample space.
I have checked all the requirements for Yosemite, but nothing happens when I click on the download button.

I have a imac 21.5 inch mid 2011 which will not turn on. It runs on osx Yosemite. So when the loading bar that shows up when turning on is in the middle it stops loading and after a while randomly shuts down.

I have a 2013 iMac running 10.10.1 and I've noticed this gray bar that appears at the bottom of my screen.Very short...about the width of the standard folder icon. It only appears with the dock and it doesn't matter if the dock is at the bottom or the left/right side of the screen....when the dock disappears, so does the bar. (photo attached)

I have just installed Windows 7 Home Basic with Paralles. Windows is working fine along with OSX. I am facing a problem.
1. I cant drag and drop copy from MAC to Win or reverse.
2. I cant see Mac drives from Windows also I cant see Windows desktop folder or documents folder from Mac OS.

I Installed Yosemite to my Imac last night, must say I don't like the interface half as much as the last one! But that's not my main gripe. I don't appear to be able to search on Google. Is this deliberate, because of the rivalry between apple and Google? also since downloading ios 8 on to my Ipad2 it keeps freezing, and dropping out. Not impressed with this at all.

When I start Safari it takes a while to get going, a window opens for a moment with a spinning wheel and then the program crashes. I'm using a mid 2007 20" IMac (2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4GB of memoryrunning Yosemite.
The system error report which gets sent to Apple makes no sense to me, as I don't have any technical knowledge, but scrolling through the report I found this section which refers to something crashing,.

System Spec: Late 09 21" 3.06, GeForce 9400, 4gb ramCurrently I have itunes and safari running, if i enable the visualizer my imac is noticeably slower, especially when browsing the internet.I thought it might be the fact I was running a second 1080p display from the 9400 would have caused the slow down. But the same thing occurred after i disconnected it. After repairing permissions and restarting, pmram etc.Is the 9400 causing the slowdown? I know its fairly old but itunes visualizer and safari should be quite basic tasks. Its not the end of the world i know but does the 27" imac have similar issues as i plan to upgrade my machine in 2011.

After I change my OS from Mavericks to Yosemite, moving files between folders is very slow.
For example, if I move one jpg file in Desktop to Pictures folder (or just any other folders like Trash), it takes about 3 seconds.
When I was still using Mavericks, it made that Ding sound and transferred files right away. However, now, although it makes the Ding sound right away, the file is still there for 3 seconds.
I tried to clean up my mac using many apps, but they never fixed this problem.
I've also tried what I saw on this one thread. OS X File Transfers Very Slow
Go->Connect to Server then type "cifs://server-address" but it says there is a problem and did nothing. (maybe different issue)

Finding an effective way to transfer old VHS videos to my Mac with Yosemite so that I can burn them to DVDs. These are so important to me as they include videos of my three children from birth until the age of DVDs. There is NOTHING out there that I can find that will work. The "Debut" program available online for free does not clarify whether it will work with a Mac or with Yosemite.

Some weeks ago, I installed OS X Yosemite, as shown on my App Store, that was a "System Update available for my IMac 2009". Followed all the steps, normally and installed it as I did many other times ago (with the Maverick, Mountain Lion, OS X).
Just after the installation, I noticed that every single folder or program that depends on "Apple", stopped working.
Examples: Office package opens normally, so as Firefox. But, IPhoto, ITunes, Safari and App Store itself do not.
When trying to reinstall Yosemite or return to the one I had before, using App Store became impossible. Even the "Apple Icon" on the top left corner does not work. I click, it flashes, just IF it was ready to open, but nothing happens, seams that have something stopping the "loading process" of the software.

I have a later 2012 iMac 27". The computer was running slow for the past week or so. I decided to update to Yosemite today. The installation stated it had a critical error and the downloaded file was corrupted. It asked to re-download the file, and then the iMac froze. It went to a gray screen without a restart. I forced the iMac to restart. After the restart, a progress bar with the Apple symbol would come up and then the iMac would shut down. I have attempted to restart using Internet Recovery; however, the OSX will not show a drive to install to. I did another Internet Recovery and had Disk Utility come up, but it only sees a partition with approximately 2 gigs of the 3 terabytes I actually have. It seems as if iMac is not properly mounting the drive. I have two questions.
1) Is there some way to have the bios remount the drive and
2) if 1 is not possible, is it possible to recover the data off the drive?

My 27in late 2013 iMac using Yosemite 10.10.1 will not recognize USB card readers. I've tried 3 different card readers and even a brand new 3.0 reader. I only Lexar Professional Compact Flash cards, so I have to use an external card reader. My 2010 Macbook Pro has no problems reading all 3 of my external card readers. If I plug in an SD card to the external card reader nothing happens, but if I insert the SD card straight into the iMac it can recognize the card immediately. What am I doing wrong?
