PowerPC :: IMac G3 Blank Drive Install

Jul 17, 2010

I recently picked up an iMac G3 with a 600 MHz G3 Processor and a slot-loading CD-RW drive. It had 10.2.8 and 9.2.2 installed. I went into the startup disk menu in system preferences and tried to restart in 9.2.2 and be adventerous. But it would just flash a floppy disk with a ? mark. No matter what I did I could not get back to Mac OS X. I also have a MacBook with Tiger restore CDs. I tried to install that on there but could not and decided to see if it would work if I erased the drive. It did not. So now I have an iMac G3 with a blank hard drive and a Cd drive and a mind that is completely clueless about what to do!

MacBook :: Install OS On Blank Hard Drive Without Install Disc

Jun 3, 2014

I have an aluminum Macbook from late 2008, model A1278. I just had to replace the hard drive, and need to install an OS on the currently blank HDD. Problem is, my CD drive doesn't work, so I can't just install from a disc. I had installed Mountain Lion on my old hard drive, but the original OS was Snow Leopard. I haven't succeeded in getting any of my information off my old HDD. Is there another way to install either Snow Leopard or Lion onto my new hard drive?

Mac Pro :: Install Windows On Blank Internal Drive WITHOUT Using Bootcamp?

Feb 16, 2009

My bootable drive is a JBOD (concatenated array) of two internal disks. Therefore I cannot use Bootcamp. I have placed a third blank drive in the third hard drive bay. I have my download of the Windows 7 beta, which I burned to a bootable disk using Disk Utility (.cdr file). Now, might any of you in the audience be able to inform me of what I should do to get the Windows OS from the bootable disk onto the completely blank internal drive?

MacBook :: Will Snow Leopard Install On A Blank Hard Drive?

Sep 3, 2009

"In addition, it is possible to completely erase a hard drive and install Snow Leopard without a pre-existing operating system in place, enabling users to bypass the possible headaches of an upgrade and go with a clean install instead."

I'm a newbie here but wonder if the above AppleInsider statement is true. I installed Snow Leopard over my existing Leopard w/out a hitch. Earlier OS X retail DVD versions clearly distinguished between "Install" and "Upgrade" - correct?. I'm confused where I read Snow Leopard required an existing OS (Leopard or Tiger) to install. It appears Snow Leopard is a "full install" DVD?

IMac :: Install New Hard Drive But Missing Leopard Install Disc

Jan 30, 2010

I'm using a iMac PowerPC G5 that I've received from my brother. He gave it to me with a fresh install of Leopard on it, but he unfortunately no longer has the disc that came with the computer that he also used to format it before handing it to me. With that said, I ordered a new internal hard drive. Naturally, I'll need to re-install Leopard, but I don't have an install disc anywhere. How is this going to be possible? Or will it not be? Do I have to buy a new Leopard install disc? If so where and how much?

Can I do this? And if so how? Or do you think I should try and install Leopard on the existing Hd in the iMac? I still have these discs but have to get the SL applications install disc out of my drive (it's stuck and the iMac won't boot past the blue screen).

PowerPC :: G4 - Install Largest Hard Drive?

Feb 13, 2008

I have an old PowerMac G4 7400 (450 Mhz) and I'd like to use it to replace an old Micron PC I'm using as a file server. My question is, what is the largest size HD I can install in it? I checked Mactracker and it said it only supported up to 128 GB per drive. But I didn't know if this was related to the OS at the time or whether it was a hardward limitation. If I'm running Tiger on it would it support a larger 500GB drive? If it is a hardware limitation I guess I could always add a couple external firewire drives. Let me know if this should have been posted in the "collectible forum".

PowerPC :: IMac G3 233 Ghz Freezing When Trying To Install OS

Jul 21, 2006

I have an old iMac Rev A (or B?) and it is constantly freezing. It freezes in OS 8, 9, and 10.3.. but most frustrating is that it also freezes while trying to install an OS. So right now it does not have an OS installed because of that. It will not boot up to my OS 9.1 disc.. but it will boot up to it's original 8.5 disc and a 10.3 disc.. However it always freezes near the beginning of the install process (often before it even writes to the HDD). I tried taking out the old RAM and leaving it with just the one (new) 256MB chip and that didn't work.

It was freezing before with only the old RAM so. I guess it's not the RAM. I have an identical iMac that doesn't choke on anything (never freezes) and it only has 96MB of RAM. I don't know what else I can do. I'm trying to use XPostFacto to put 10.4 on this thing (it's possible, I want to try it out at least) but it won't get through the first OS install and if it does, it won't get through the second (10.4). Even more frustrating is that I don't have any diagnostic software such as the Apple Hardware Test because the original iMac didn't come with any.

PowerPC :: Trying To Install Tiger On G4 IMac?

Mar 4, 2007

I've got a flat panel G4 iMac, currently running 10.3.9. I'm having ongoing problems: frequent kernel panics, weird things happening to the display (display breaks up into a jumble of lines on occasion). I've done the usual troubleshooting: disk utility, apple hardware test, reboot in Safe. I want to try reinstalling the OS to see if this helps.

Problem: I don't have the install discs for OS 10.3.9 - about a year ago the logic board was replaced and I had the service swap in a new hard drive at that time and they loaded 10.3.9 when they did this. I don't want to buy 10.4 at this point - with Leopard coming out soon from what I understand, also want to make sure I can get the computer running properly again before I throw any more money at it. I've tried using borrowed discs to install 10.4, but I keep getting a message stating: "you cannot install this software on this computer". This has happened with 3 different borrowed install discs. Two of the borrowed discs were for iBooks, one was for a G5 iMac.

PowerPC :: How To Install Tiger On My G3 600 Mhz Imac

Jul 4, 2008

so i want to install tiger on my G3 600 mhz 256 mb RAM imac that has no dvd drive.i looked around the net and found that apple used to accept tiger DVD's and exchange them for CD's for a 10$ fee but thats no longer the case....

i also found that i could install tiger from another mac with a DVD drive using firewire disk mode...so i looked around my things and found an old firewire cable and hooked both machines up (imac and my mbp) and restarted the imac holding down the t key and so then the firewire symbol shows up on the imacs screen...well from what i understand the imac's HD is supposed to show up on my mbp desktop...this never happens. And ive tried it multiple times...so i dont know what the problem is..and ive tried it using OS 9 and 10.0 the OS's the machine came with..

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Will Not Install Leopard From Partitioned Drive?

Dec 28, 2010

I have a PPC iBook G4 with 1.3 Ghz and 1 GB SDRAM that I bought new in 2006. I've never had a single problem with the machine, but it doesn't have a superdrive and the OS Tiger capabilities are limiting.

Last year I upgraded to Leopard with a .dmg via FW external drive and loved the interface, but with only a 40GB HD I deleted any app I didn't need. Over the summer I bought a new iMac, but I still need the laptop whenever I'm away from my desk. I tried erasing and reinstalling now that I don't have to keep much data on the drive...interested in getting back those non-essential apps. I've done it before with the exact same resources, but this time it's not working. I'm hoping someone out there can tell me what step I'm forgetting.

Here's what I've done:

1. Connected iBook to iMac in target mode via FW and erased/partitioned HD in Apple Partition Format.

2. Reinstalled Tiger on iBook from original disc.

3. Connected iBook to external drive via FW and restored .dmg to smaller partition on iBook.

4. Opened .cdr on smaller partition, saw the Leopard disc image, set the Leopard install disc as the startup disc in System Preferences. Hit restart button in System Preferences and got the little "not happeneing" noise.

5. Went to desktop and opened the Leopard installer disk image and pressed the install/restart button there. Reboot was slow and dark at first, but ultimately booted Tiger.

6. Went back to System Preferences, selected Leopard install disc as the startup disc again, locked the selection and restarted...booted Tiger again.

7. Tried these tactics again while holding option key and then S key at restart, but the second partition with the installer was never recognized. Tried from Safe Mode, only booted Tiger.

8. Then I tried connecting the external drive again and opened the .dmg, then .cdr from there. Again System Preferences recognized the installer, but it would not boot with the same variables as before.

9. I connected the iBook to the iMac in target disc mode again and ran disc utility, all good. Then I did same with external drive, all good. I made sure both drives and the install disc image were bootable. Tried the boot again from both, all bad.

10. I did a lot of reading on troubleshooting this process and thought it might be a permissions problem, that the installer was not executable. I did a terminal tutorial and managed to make the partitioned drive and disc image both owner enabled. Still the exact same results as when I started.

PowerPC :: Can Use My Ibook Dvd Drive To Install Apps Onto My G4 Power Mac

Jan 27, 2007

I have a g3 dual usb ibook that has a DVD/CD drive, 640 ram and a firewire port. I just bought a G4 800 mhz tower that has a gig of ram, but it does not have DVD drive (it's a cdrw only). My Ilife install disk is a DVD, is there anyway to use the DVD drive on my ibook to install software onto the G4 tower? Both devices have firewire but if possible I would like to use an ethernet cable connection between the two. I dont have the correct firewire cable(it's expensive).

A second question is i an os 10.3 on my ibook and 10.4 on my G4 tower. Is there a easy way to transfer all my files, settings, ect... from the ibook to the G4 tower? I don have the osx 10.4 install discs either (if that matters).

PowerPC :: Snow IMac G3 - Bad Safari Layout - Can't Install FireFox

Jul 7, 2009

I've been in and out of these forums since last December. I bought my first MacBook and I couldn't be happier. Best computer ever! I am never going back to PC, and I'm trying to convert the rest of my family. I am starting with the most difficult hill to climb first, my father. He just barely learned how to download music and burn CDs this year. My mom just needs to send emails and pay bills online. So for fathers day, I bought my dad a used show white iMac G3. I can't believe how fast it is. He thought it came from space, but was excited. He's not tech savvy in any way, but he is trying and is slowly learning. I'm trying to get it as close to what he's use to, and there is the problem. He knows what FireFox looks and feels like, but I cannot install it. I download the program, "install" it, but I can't load it up. I click on the icon and it bounces up and down in the dock and then fades away. Its like the feeling you get when your car is about to start and dies down. I have no idea what to do. I'm only 7+ months into Mac's, so I could be missing something simple...maybe? I've check the permissions on firefox and allowed everyone to read/write but nothing I can think of anything else. Also, I've been searching and searching for this one, but I have no idea how to word it and I'm coming up nothing. Since I can't run firefox, I'm teaching the old man to use safari. He could eventually learn it, but even I prefer firefox. That's another story for another time. Any ways, the problem with Safari on his G3, even after every possible update (I think), every layout on every page is totally off. When I click on Safari and the apple home page comes up, some icons are cut in half, the bottom bar with the list of links is towards the middle, and side bars are just messed up. Pages like craigslist come up with a harsh fully aligned left layout. Other pages have words stacked on other words so its impossible to make out whats going on. My mom was going crazy because she couldn't figure out how to log out of her bank account (kinda funny). I've tried Displays on the iMac, I've tried View on Safari, messing with text size, ect, nothing has helped me. I don't know what to do here either.

MacBook :: How To Install OSX On New Blank Harddrive

Jul 17, 2009

Windows On Mac :: Blank Screen When Trying To Install XP SP2?

Oct 29, 2009

I am trying to set up boot camp on my new mac mini. The primary reason is that 10.6 intel macs don't support my version of mac photoshop (Photoshop 7). I have an XP version of photoshop installed on my old laptop, and want to boot XP on my mac and move it over. However, when I tried to install Boot Camp, and re-started with the windows CD in from Boot Camp, I had a gray screen for a bit, then a blank screen.

I have a brand new Mac Mini, with OS X 10.6, and I set up the boot camp partition successfully. My windows CD is XP with SP2 as apple claims is required.

Additionally, I have an external hard drive with a .bkf file on it from a backup of my old PC laptop that has photoshop in it, but I can't extract that to my BOOTCAMP drive, at least without windows already installed on it.

I tried some other windows CD's, and a windows DVD that are supposed to be bootable borrowed from friends, using the boot camp application, with the CD in, at least XP SP 2, and I still got a blank screen as it re-started, and thus have been unable to install windows.

Is there another way I could install windows? Perhaps from my .BKF file? Is there something I might be doing wrong? I do have an older monitor, a viewsonic 17 inch, and I'm using an apple adapter. Could it be that windows install CD's don't support my graphics card? If so, how am I supposed to install windows? Also, my keyboard doesn't seem to be recognized either. It is a macally ikey extended keyboard, and I can't even get the caps lock light to turn on while it is trying to load of the windows XP disk with boot camp.

MacBook :: How To Install An OS On A Blank Harddrive

Apr 15, 2012

I've got a problem with my harddrive, it's on its way out. The Mac will still start, but after a while, the HDD gets stuck and so it's time to replace. I have a full backup on my time machine external hard drive - my question is, how do I get this on the new blank hard drive?

I'm using 10.5.8, but I don't have an installation disk. THe HDD was replaced once before under warranty, and the people in the shop were kind enough to stick on the new system, upgrading me from 10.4, so no disk available. I MIGHT have an installation disk for 10.4, but as far as I understand, I would not be able to restore my system because my backup is on 10.5.

Also, I'm pondering installing an SSD which would be 125GB (financial reasons prevent me from buying a bigger one).

My current HD is 160GB, i.e. the backup will be bigger than the capacity of the SSD.  I presume if I somehow get to install Leopard (or Lion) on it, I can restore selected folders, thereby circumventing the problem?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8), 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB, 667 mhz, ddr2sdram
