So i have the new I7 Imac. I have a Duet and a Powered G drive. The Duet takes firewire 400 and the GDrive takes fire wire 800. But my imac only has one firewire 800 port.am i able to run my duet daisy chain off my g drive?
it would be like this Duet--(FW400)-->Gdrive--(FW800)--> Imac. Is this going to cause any issues for my duet or my imac?(power and performance wise)???
I'm trying to get my optical output to work on my imac. In my Audio Midi set up it says that "output is not supported" under the Audio output settings.

View 6 Replies View RelatedHad a quick question. I'm on my third 27" stock 3.06Ghz imac that was replaced yesterday. The good news is that so far it doesn't seem to have any of the problems of my previous two 27" imac's. There is one thing though. A couple of seconds after pressing the power button to bootup there is a brief mechanical sound from the dvd drive like a quick ejecting sound even though there is no cd in the drive. My first 27" imac dvd drive made the sound but the second imac 27" Imac I had didn't. Is this sound normal? Would be curious to know why two out of the three 27" Imac's I had make that noise.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using a 20" white intel iMac and cannot manage to remove a linux boot disc from the optical drive.At first, the only way that i managed to boot to the linux disc in the first place was from the Startup Disk menu in OSX. I could not even get to the Startup Manager ('opt' at boot) or boot straight to the disc ('C').Now i'm in a position where no matter what i do, the system boots to the linux disc. I cannot even force the startup into OSX to try to eject the disc from there. I've tried holding all of these keys/combinations at startup

The intel iMac was made in late 2006 and the iMac G3 was made in 1999, 1998 or 2000.
Basic dumb question. My buddy has both a pc and a mac at work. He has music spread across both of them. What he'd like to do is colelct all his media files and put them on one external hard drive, then be able to connect both his PC and his MBP to the hardrive to access his music.
What would be the best way to do this? Is there something exceedingly simple like a hard drive with two USB outs that could feed both computers at the same time?

I've swapped my iMac's optical drive twice since it originally failed three months out of warranty. My first replacement was a UJ-875. My latest replacement was a UJ-225 Blu-ray reader. Here's the thing:
When attempting to insert discs, both drives failed to "grab" it and pull it into the iMac. The bezel of the iMac is so thick that I would lose the disc inside without the optical drive actually taking hold and loading the disc. With the tip of a pen I was able to push the disc in another few millimeters and it would grab and load up without issue. Both drives functioned flawlessly once I got the disc in there.
So...What is Apple doing to customize their drives so that they "grab" earlier rather than later? Is this a mechanical adjustment that can be made on the optical drive? I'm rather surprised that I've been unable to find anything like this on the web.
I bought a Sonnet Duet 1.8 I fully installed the firmware is that the g4 mdd card with osx 10.5 is ok but when I start from 9.2.2 to the end of the loading of extensions freezes and I have to restart it manually, I tried with the extensions off and is the same, I tried to remove all the pci card and I have not solved anything, I tried booting from the original disk and nothing, I tried to do an installation of the system on a g3 and then start it by g4 and nothing, I unplugged everything that you could pull fans, dvd, etc. and nothing I have tried different mac os 9.2.1,9.2.2 (with different mac os rom from 9.0.4 to 10.2.1 to finish which should be the last) and nothing but installing the original processor is a dual 1.0 ghz everything goes perfectly.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI've been looking at a number of different Firewire 800 enclosures to use with my new Mac Mini and I have seen lots of complaints with almost all the enclosures that I have investigated, including the Newertech MiniStack v3 which I thought should be a good one. A recent enclosure I came across that I haven't seen any bad reviews about is the Icy Dock (MB559UEB-1S). I'd like to know if others are using this and what they think about it. The next question has to do with the type of hard drive to put into the enclosure. Is it worth getting a high performance drive, or will the Firewire 800 interface be the bottleneck even with an average speed drive?

Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. About 6 months ago, I did a DIY replacement of my iMac's internal hard drive (upgrade to 1 tb), so I'm pretty sure I'd like to DIY an optical drive / hard drive swap - that is, if it's 1) Proven to work stably (thermally and otherwise) 2) Not going to require the iMac's fan to be running faster/louder than normal Looking at my iMac's system profiler, the DVD drive is on an ATA bus (which, as I remember it, is slower than S-ATA). What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?
View 1 Replies View RelatedLately I've been using my external hard drive as the main drive of my imac I5 and every day it freezes when I open 3 or 4 apps or more or while doing several stuff at the same time. This, obviously, doesnt happen when using the internal hard drive of the imac, so I suppose is due to using firewire 800 or usb 2.0. Is it normal for every external hard drive to freeze when using it as the main drive or maybe is it that my external hard drive is bad?
I'm planning on buying a more quieter external hard drive to use as the main drive of my imac, but I wont do so if it also keeps freezing every day. Any suggestions? Is it normal even when using firewire 800? When using the external hard drive I umount the internal drive of the imac. Maybe this is the reason? Its a Lacie Big Disk 500GB. Would an external SSD make a difference or would it still freeze?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm curious what people use for external storage on their iMacs. I have a Mac Pro which is getting a little long in the tooth. I'm debating whether to get a new Mac Pro or to get an iMac, which would be a pretty good speed bump from my Mac Pro 1,1. I'd get the ssd drive, and the 2TB harddrive and get aftermarket RAM. But what I like about the Mac Pro is the upgrades you can do. And I like the four hard drive bays, for storage and backup. I've got over 3 TB of photos and music/tv/movies, so I'm going to need an external drive. In addition, I'd like to be able to backup everything. Is there an elegant way to do this on an iMac with an external drive that isn't super loud and hot?

First off, music is my main priority when it comes to computing, I write all sorts of electronic music, I'm used to working in Windows under Ableton or FL Studio, so I'm not hip to the Mac software for these functions.
In addition to the electronic music I write, I'm also very much into music instruments, I've been playing drums for around 8 years now, bass for 5 years, guitar even... so I plan on multi-track recording... up to 16, maybe even 32?I do plan on opening up my own home studio, I would be using this PC, (not sure if the MBP or the iMac)
I'm also a lightweight gamer, playing games such as Team Fortress 2, World of Warcraft, or StarCraft II (Diablo 3 will probably be my biggest gaming vice when it comes out) sparingly in my free time, which would be better for this sort of light gaming?I sometimes spend up to 8 hours on the computer, also, so if these screens are too harsh on the eyes after extended periods of time, I'd appreciate if someone could enlighten me to that.
SO, with all that said, which do you guys think would suit me better? (and I'm really thinking the iMac would)... I used to want portability, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable taking a $2,000 laptop with me around campus at the local community college.
