IMac :: Intel IMac Cannot Manage To Remove A Linux Boot Disc From The Optical Drive
Nov 1, 2009I'm using a 20" white intel iMac and cannot manage to remove a linux boot disc from the optical drive.At first, the only way that i managed to boot to the linux disc in the first place was from the Startup Disk menu in OSX. I could not even get to the Startup Manager ('opt' at boot) or boot straight to the disc ('C').Now i'm in a position where no matter what i do, the system boots to the linux disc. I cannot even force the startup into OSX to try to eject the disc from there. I've tried holding all of these keys/combinations at startup

Jan 7, 2010I was working with logic pro 8 on a project when the APP crashed. Then, the whole computer became real slow. I couldn't open anything without getting the spiraling rainbow circle for at least 3+min and even then the app wouldn't launch. So I shut down normally, which took a while.
After I left it off for about a min or so, I tried to boot again just to get stuck on the gray screen with the apple logo. I did some research on my phone (since I currently don't have internet because I'm moving this week) and found out how to reset the pram. I tried it, and this time it got all the way to the blue screen where it got stuck. I tried resetting the pram a second time to finally get to the log in screen but everything was going very very slow. Unusable type of slow. Opening a new finder window took at least 2 mins and everytime I ran my mouse across the idock, it would freeze.

I installed them both in their own slots, made sure that they clicked in.when I connect all the cables in and turn it on I get no boot sound.I decided to take one of the new ram out and installed an old one it boots up. It reads that it has 3gbs of ram.

Aug 30, 2010can I boot from my HP iPod via firewire on a 2007 imac or an i7 MBP? in other words, do early iPods play nice w/ intel macs via firewire? the reason I ask is because I'm tempted by OWC's 40GB SSD sale and want to try SSD's without the risk that comes w/ surgery (save for the old iPod).

What does it do?
I hear the fans and hard drive and see the white/grey boot screen with the apple logo and spinning cog. The cog will spin for anything from 5 - 30 seconds before freezing. Some disk activity will continue for a short time afterwards before everything grinds to a halt?

Sep 3, 2014I have an aluminium cased iMac (2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) running OS 10.6.8.
Recently I have found that sometimes the machine will not boot - I get the normal chime, grey screen and then the flashing question mark icon. I first noticed the problem a few months ago when restarting after a power outage had occured whilst I was using the Mac. After a couple of tries the machine booted and so I thought little more about it because in usual circumstances when the machine was shut down correctly it started as normal and behaved perfectly. However, after another power outage over the weekend the problem has become much worse.
I have tried all the usual things like trying to boot up in safe mode and recovery mode but with no success. The only way I can get the Mac to boot at all is to simply keep powering down and powering up again and hoping that it will spring into life. Once it does boot the Mac behaves perfectly.
I have an 10.6.8 universal system disk and I got the machine to boot from this disk. I then tried to perform some diagnostics on the hard drive (320Gb) but when I got to the pane that shows the available drivesthere was no drive to be seen.
After a lot of tries I have got it to boot off the hard drive since so, I have been able to back up files that weren't archived to an external drive.

Jun 1, 2014The problem is that the mac will not boot period.When I press the Option on start up, it takes me to a screen where I could select to boot from the Macintosh Hard disk or Recovery 10.9 disk.Choosing either of these still does not boot up the computer.
I think that the hard disk is damaged but what I do not understand is why I can still get the option to choose the Hard disk or the Recovery disk.I am waiting to hear from Apple Support on when I can take my imac to the genius bar and I was wondering if there is anything I can do before then. PowerPC :: G4 Will Not Boot After Using Target Disk Mode Connected Intel IMac?
Feb 3, 2006We have some new Intel iMacs and have transferred some information from our previous G4 PM (one MDD and one Quicksilver) to the new iMacs. For some reason the G4's will now not boot up and kernal panic on the gray Apple boot screen. This has happened to all the G4's we have in our office. They are running OSX 10.2.8 and the iMacs are running OSX 10.4.4. We can still mount the drives from the G4's using FireWire Target Disk mode.
I have tried zapping the PRAM etc but they still wont boot. I have also tried running the OSX 10.2 Installer disks to try and reinstall OSX on the G4's but the installer cannot see the drives?
I tried running the disk utility. It finds the hard drive but wont let me verify/repair permissions (the option is grayed out). It will only let me verify/repair the disk, but it finds no errors. The installer cannot find the disk at all.
We have more than one hard drive in the G4's and the target disk mode will only mount the system drive, it doesnt see the others, so we cannot retrieve out information. Whats going on. Never had this problem before.
Anyone have any idea what is wrong. Never had this problem before using the FireWire transfer.

May 14, 2008Got my 24" 2.4GHz iMac on release last year, with Tiger. Installed Leopard on it on release day.
The problem I have is that ever since a botched Boot Camp installation I've had endless problems with certain applications hanging during their startup (notably Image Capture) or refusing to quit (notably iTunes). Force Quit doesn't resolve these issues. Restarting doesn't work because Force Quit can't quit them so I have to pull the plug or otherwise force a shutdown.
Upon restarting I either get the grey screen that instantly appears, or, if I've pulled the plug and left it for a few minutes I can get to the Apple symbol but no spinner or any further start up action. Occasionally I get lucky, get back up and running, and all is well until the next crash.
All this started happening when I decided to try installing Windows on Boot Camp again. I've had it on here a couple of times since Leopard was released but usually end up deleting it eventually because either the Windows installation gets bogged down or I get bored with it and never use it. Anyway, this time, using the same discs I've always used (and yes, it's SP2, so it should be fine and anyway it's worked at least twice before) when I got to the 'restart to continue installing Windows' bit, I got the white screen and nothing happened. After an hour or so of praying and restarting endlessly trying to get a response, I finally got it to recognise my OSX installation and was up and running again. The Boot Camp volume didn't appear to be there and Disk Utility revealed zero problems whatsoever. Everything looked fine until these recurring hangs, refusals to quit apps and screwed up start-ups.
Any ideas? I don't have the expensive Apple support, but it's less than a year old! Of course, I realise that this means nothing to Apple, who seem to think I should pay a premium in order to have my machine warrantied by them for more than 90 days. Grr...
If I get it up and running I'm thinking I should just wipe the ENTIRE system absolutely clean and re-install Leopard and then use my Time Machine backup to put all my data back on (pricelessly valuable as I use the machine to work on my photography with), but I'm concerned that if there's a flaw in the System somewhere, a corruption, that installing the Time Machine backup will just reintroduce the error. On the other hand, if it's a deeply embedded and invisinle partition corruption from the bad Boot Camp installation attempt, that should be fixed by wiping the entire drive to reinstall Leopard, right?
IMac (Intel) :: Powers Down While Starting In Safe Boot Mode Running OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
Sep 9, 2014My 2014 21" iMac powers itself down after about 10 seconds while trying to startup in safe boot mode. I'm not even sure why it is trying to start in safe boot mode. I shut it down after a power outage while plugged into an APS UPS. I'm guessing that since I interrupted the auto shutdown it is restarting in safe boot mode. Either way, I get a grey screen with a big apple and a progress bar. The progress bar gets to about a tenth full and the power just shuts off.
I've tried starting up while holding the alt key to select the Macintosh HD. The same thing happens.

May 15, 2010I have a 2 week old iMac 27", i7, 2tb Hard Drive, 16gb RM
In the second week the boot up times became very slow.
I would turn the machine on and get the chime within 5 seconds or so.
Then just a black/blank screen.
Eventually after about 10mins I would get a white screen then it would boot up normally.
Now the machine just doesn't get to the white screen. So I get the chime and then just darkness. It does sound like the machine is on (usual quiet imac whirring).
I've tried various key commands when I turn the machine on including pressing C with the install disk in the dvd drive and the alt, control, P, R pram reset.
I've also tried unplugging all the cables, leaving the machine for a minute and switching back on. I did manage to perform the PRAM reset once. I reset the machine and it booted fine.
But now when I switch it on just darkness.
I've called after sales and will try to get the machine replaced but in the meantime is there anything I could try that might make the machine work? I need to do a remix this weekend (deadline Monday) so really need to get it working.

I have tried restoring from TM backup from recovery mode (worked the last time this happened) however upon completion it returns to the recovery screen? I made a disk of Lion when I downloaded the first time (followed same instructions sourced from numerous websites) which does not seem to work when i set to start up from this disk, just gets to the grey screen and flicks between the apple logo, a folder icon with a question mark and the circle with line through? Now I can't eject the disk either, a message appears that system can't eject and to make sure all applications are closed? Not sure how to go about closing these applications without being able to start the system? When I tried booting from the Macintosh HD I got a message that the boot cache partition was faulty? I have ran disk permissions etc all ok.

Apr 22, 2012I have a Imac PPC with a 2Ghz processor and 1GB of Ram. I am running leopard 10.5.8. Recently i woke the PC from sleep mode to find a blue screen with only the cursor working. Using the internet, I determined how to get the PC booted in safe mode. I have used all the disk utilities at my disposal along with onyx and cocktail to try and fix what I believe is a startup problem. I hae booted the PC in single user mode and tried the fskc codes, which i believe is just the same as the disk utility. Based on my computer all permissions are correct and there is nothing wrong with the HD. The PC still will not boot normally. I have even done an archive and re-install of Leopard.

Mar 28, 2009I think it worked at one point, but sometime around the point when I set up Fusion with the partition, Windows Aero turned off and is no longer an option in the display settings. I installed this driver with the modded INF to see if it would do anything, but Aero is still not an option. I also have issues playing some games in Fusion, while they work fine in Boot Camp.

Oct 28, 2009Back in August, I did an OS update on my iMac, and the machine wouldn't reboot. I was able to reinstall Leopard by booting from a disk, and all was well for a few more weeks. The machine seemed to run normal, with the exception of 5-minute-plus boot up times. But within a few weeks it stopped booting. I installed Leopard on an external HDD and figured I'd leave the internal alone until Snow Leopard came out.
A few weeks later when SL was released, I booted from the install disk, found the internal HDD, and went through the installation process. Everything went fine but the machine would not boot. I installed SL on my external HDD running Leopard, and everything was fine. I've since been running my computer off the external.
The internal HDD no longer shows up on the desktop, in Disk Utility, etc. I'm fearing it may have died. More worrisome, though, is my machine doesn't always boot up, whether from my external HDD (set as the startup disk) or from CD. By "doesn't always boot up," I mean most of the time when I restart, it just sits on a gray screen, nothing happens (even when holding "Option" or C.) Sometimes it will boot, but takes 20 or 30 minutes to do so.
I'm considering replacing the internal HDD, but am curious, does that seem like the issue, or might the failure to boot from externals and CDs indicate a more serious problem?
Intel Mac :: Cannot Boot From Selected External Drive On Intel Core Duo 10.4.3?
May 29, 2012OS X 10.4.3 IMAC Intel Core Duo. I backed up my HD on an external drive so I could upgrade to Snow Leopard. I wanted to test that I could boot from the external drive and selected it as my start up drive. When I did a restart I got the Apple and the turning gear and then suddenly a black screen with this on it:
"May 28 22:23:11 Launched:com.apple.nibindd:respawning too quickly throttling, exited system abnormally bad system call too many failures in succession I have no name!"
I tried several dozen times with no luck. I think when I made the copy of my HD on the external HD I may have neglected to make it "bootable" (moving too quickly). My internal CDROM is busted so I use an external CDROM. I can't boot from it at all with the proper start up buttons pushed. It keeps trying to boot from the external drive. If I turn the external drive off and try to boot from the external CD I just get the grey file with the ? in the middle of it.
I tried using another external HD I have with OS 10.4 on it, but it won't recognize it either with fan, alt, shift, delete pressed at start up. My internal drive (a Seagate 2 tarabite drive) works great, but how do I reset it as the start up drive when I'm stuck with this black screen. One more thing, when I try to reset PRAM I don't get a second gong.

May 14, 2012I have the CD version of tiger and am trying to install it to a recently purchased iMac G3. The Installer installs disc 1, resets, but doesn't boot up to install disc 2, it simply asks again to install disc 1. The Mac for some reason will not boot from the installed software and therefore I cannot complete installation. Can anyone figure out why the mac refuses to boot from the HD in order to install disc 2?

Apr 7, 2009When I look at "About This Mac" it says that I have a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I originally had two 1GB sticks. When I installed two 2GB RAM sticks, it wouldn't boot. Just for fun, I tried putting one 2GB and one 1GB stick inside, and it boots fine.

But I read somewhere else that even if I install two 2GB sticks that it will just ignore the power of the second one and default to 3GB.

Feb 24, 2010I found this beautiful 17" eMac at a yard sale! it is pristine I fell in love. I went about removing the stuff left behind by the old owner. Now it does not boot.
