I have an old PPC g5 iMac in the other room doing nothing. Can I use that iMac as a server with the external drives attached and have Plex read them all from my network on the Mini?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just turned a .mov file into DVD using iDVD for the first time. The actual asset encoding took about 3.5 hours for 120 minutes. is that good/bad/average. Is there a faster way?
I basically want to watch stuff on a DVD player and normal screen and not my Powerbook.
I know my DVD player will play mpegs, so could I just turn the .mov files into mpegs? I don't have QT 7 Pro unfortunately but I have d/l VLC.... What can be done?
my mac is taking ages to load and making loud noises, i'm getting really scared! could be the hard drive dying??
it all happened yesterday i left it on its own and when i came back next morning it was off, it ran out of charge! thats all what happened
now is taking forever to load the os x, if its gonna brake down how can i make a backup? and start all over again?
should i buy a better hard drive? and which is the highest storage hdd i can get?
I don't know really specific details of what it is but it's a MacBook pro and only a few months old with os snow loeoard. I've been sitting here for about an hour and it's still on that screen with the apple and the swirly loading thingy which usually only lasts a few seconds. Last night I did some kind of updates from apple (not sure what they were but I don't think it was anything major) but I restarted it between then and now and it worked fine so maybe it's not that... I don't know. I also downloaded a virus check thing from the apple website last night. I ran a scan and didn't get any viruses but a few warnings and put them in the vault or whatever they call it. After I finished it it wouldn't close or even force quit so I just shut down. it took ages to shut down and I wanted to go to bed and I probably did the wrong thing but I held down the power button to hurry it up like you do on pc and it shut down (that was my last shutdown).

View 12 Replies View RelatedI have about 6 external USB drives that are mostly 1TB or 1.5TB. I have been trying to copy files from old ones to new ones but if I plug in more than two they keep unmounting with the message that the drive was not unmounted properly and may now be damaged. I have two so far that are corrupted. I have tried three different powered USB hubs thinking it was lack of power but it made no difference. This problem occurs on my 26" iMac Running Lion and on my new PowerBookPro running Mavericks.Â

How can I leave the 2TB drive connected and power up the iMac ?Â
The 2TB drive was purchased to be a Time Machine backup drive.Â

Since Genius Mixes we're announced yesterday, I wanted to try them. I downloaded iTunes 9, and saw that in the Genius section of the left-hand side toolbar, Mixes was not listed. So I turned Genius off and then on. I got the start-up dialogue, I was prompted for my password and I accepted the terms of service. Then it went onto the list of steps. It completed step 1 in less than a second but then it goes onto step 2 and that never ends! It gets stuck there.
PS: I've restarted my Mac and installed all the software upgrades. but still no success.
Recently my iMac has been booting really slow and I've run out of ideas to fix it. So far I've used Onyx to tune everything up, repaired permissions, repaired disk using the disk utility (no errors came up), and I've cleared PRAM. I have XP as a partition using Boot Camp. Its starting to get really annoying.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWell im concerned that my imac is slowing down and is taking to long to boot-up, because when i first got him the imac was a bit faster. So i was thinking i should ask you guys for your boot-up duration before i reinstall Mac OS X. My MBP is also slowing down, don't know if im doing anything wrong so would love to know how long others boot-up lasts.

I have a mid 2011 27" iMac that is taking longer than 3 minutes to boot. I've tried turning off everything in the start up menu, but that hasn't worked. In one of the other questions like this, Linc, I believe said to go to terminal and post to questions the output showed up in Text edit, and I have posted them below:

Anyone know if it's possible to attach two USB hard drives to a Time Capsule via a USB hub, and configure them in a RAID1 configuration and use them as my Time Machine backup disk? I would then use the TCs internal drive as network storage.

After rebooting (hey, this sounds like Windows!), the drive again showed up on the desktop and Time Machine worked fine.Is an external hard drive not showing up on the desktop a somewhat common issue?
when i connect my external hard drive (2 partitions, 1 for timemachine 1 for storage) it keeps disconecting it self unapropriately.
I have the same problem with a couple of usb flash drives. There are no usb hubs involved they are inserted directly in to my mac!

Is it possible to set up a backup between two external drives?
i use time machine to back up my imac onto an external 2T.
i also have two external 3T drives. i am looking for redundancy of data, tried software RAID and it failed. i also see some limitations with RAID that a backup would avoid.

I was experiencing intermittent problems reading a CF card through an external multicard reader. I also had connected a Seagate external hard drive. With some trial and error disconnecting, connecting and restarting, I could get the CF to read. Now I can't see any external drives - neither the CF or Seagate are recognized.

just purchased a new 27" Quad core i5 and it takes about 5 seconds for it to go to sleep, and then makes a loud noise after.
My hard drive is also noisy, it whines and drums constantly.
I also have got yellow tint on all sides of the screen.
I live in NZ so if i will not get a new replacement, instead it will be sent away to apple which will take forever
by the way it is the older 27" (late 2009) version.
I have a fairly new iMac that I upgraded to Snow Leopard a few months ago. It seemed to me that prior to that my external HD worked fine with Time Machine. Since then it is recognized for a short period of time when I connect it, then it disappears. I replaced it with a WD My Book. It worked perfectly for a month and now it has shut down. Has anybody had run into this before? I can't believe that every hard drive fails within a month in the same mysterious way!

My iMac is running out of hard drive space as its the central computer we use to run Apple TV from. I woudl like to add an external hard drive and woudl prefer to plug it into one of the RJ45 ports on the time machine and save all large movie, audio and image files onto the hard drive -

Brought them out of storage on a very, very careful move and now some don't work which used to days ago.
- 320 GB lacie - works
- 1 TB elements works
- Samsung 2TB works
- 1TB firewire 400 WD was working, right up to tonight, and now it doesn't (not even on the USB connection instead of Fire Wire)
- 1TB WD (used for time machine) stopped working weeks agoGot a message about a device or such plugged into USB was drawing too much power earlier, first time ever
Turned the mac off, disconnected the power, held power button 5 secs and plugged in and restarted, no goodThe working ones seem to work on an unpowered hub but those not working of course don't Have searched the internet, nothing seems to be giving an answer of late for this.
Other issues starting to arise:
- DVD's won't eject from the iMac now
- Internet (Wireless lan connected to iinet DSL wireless router (BOB) drops out a lot and have to run network diagnostic all the time)These are less important, need to fix this HDD issue so I can back up with time machine and install snow leopard then develop my app)
Is it possible to have an external HDD connected to an iMac or Mac Mini on a regular basis? I have a Power Mac G4, and it's always had issues with going into sleep mode when there is any external storage connected via the USB 2.0 ports (and I've put in replacement ports to try and remedy this, to no avail). The main problem is that once the system wakes up, it thinks you've improperly removed the device. Apple told me, way back, that this was normal and to just eject all external storage before going into sleep mode. Which is a pain, but looking at a new desktop Mac I would like to just get the tiny, base HDD and use a beefy external for all my media - unless this is still an acceptable norm with new macs.
