MacBook Pro :: It Cannot Connect To Wifi But Will Connect Through Ethernet
Apr 22, 2012
It is on my home network which I have been using for months. I have made no changes to my router or network setting. Other devices will still connect to the wifi with no problem and I connect through the ethernet connection with no problem. I have disabled the wifi and restarted my computer with no luck.

My mac book air pro book laptop won't connect to the Wifi or via ethernet in my hotel room.Although yesterday, we were in another hotel and it connected fine.
My other HP Pavilion belonging to my fiance's laptop works fine in the room.
The technician tested the in room connection but was not authorized to help me with my Mac individually. It sees the connection under the wireless networks, it connects to the network but upon trying to gain access to a web page, it appears as if I am off line or not connected.

I don't know what's wrong with it.My ipod touch connects just fine and yet when i try to connect my new macbook it won't allow me to connect.I've never owned a macbook - so i have no idea how to fix this.
I currently have the network setup assistant running and configuring - but it's been about an hour and it hasn't done anything. Is there something else i need to do?

I just bought an airport extreme w/gigabit, and I'm wondering if it's possible to connect an ethernet switch to one of my pro's ethernet ports and have things like my xbox 360 and ps3 run off it, however, my mac pro would be connected to my airport extreme via 802.11n. is that possible?

I have a pretty old Titanium Mac Book that runs OS 10.3.9. It's a moderately slow machine, but still works- and although I realize that it won't be able to stream video or anything, I figure it would work for email, and basic web browsing- But I'm wondering if it's going to be compatible with any new products such as a USB wifi antenna - because the room where I want to use it won't alow for an ethernet connection-  Also, will the old 10.3.9 OS allow me to connect wifi to the newer airport extreme base stations?Â

So as of mid-day my Macbook will not connect to the internet in our apartment via ethernet. I have tried all my roomates ethernet plug ins and it still does not work. It shows a green light next to ethernet saying it his hooked up but it won't load any pages. I've tried network diagnostics? When I try to go to a webpage it goes to a white screen and after 5min of trying to load it bring up the "not connected to the internet" text. I guess I'll make a trip to the apple store wednesday if at all possible unless you guys come up with something. This machine is out of warranty so I'm wondering what would be the worse case scenario and how much am I looking at spending?

I'm here at university and the wifi here sucks! it is so slow, it is working. However there is an ethernet port and I did connect to it this morning. But, this evening I tried connecting again and it wouldnt let me!At my university they require you to put in your student ID and pw in order for you to use the internet for both wi-fi and ethernet. But when i tried this evening it dint ask for my student ID or password. I went to settings and it did say that there was a connection and that "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet"
i dont understand how come now it isnt working. I aksed my classmate nextdoor if his internet port was working through the ethernet port he said it was.... i am not that tech savy so keep vocabulary to something simple lmaooo.

Today when I turned on my computer, it suddenly would not recognize any kind of Internet connection. The Ethernet cable that I use every day now shows up as 'unplugged' even though it is plugged in. I have tried using a different cable, and it still shows up as unplugged. When I try to connect to the Internet wirelessly, there is always a connection timeout and I can't connect. I use a self-assigned IP address and I've never had this problem before. I've also reset my PRAM, but it hasn't worked.

I have the original 1st generation Core Duo MacBook, and I'm having some trouble with the wifi. Often, when I go to a new location like to a library or a friend's house, I won't be able to connect to the wifi (it will timeout) or it will connect, but the signal strength will be very weak or the internet will be very slow.
It's not that it's out of range, I'm in an area that's known to have wifi and others around me can pick it up fine with full strength. At home, my wifi works fine, but the router is in the same room I use the computer in.

My Macbook Pro has been great since I got it last June. Recently I just did an software update that I believe included something with the wifi/airport setting. Now I cannot connect to ANYTHING. My work wifi network I can connect with my iPhone and others have connected to my "puck" wifi from CLEAR. I have ruled out that the connections I am trying to connect to are the problem. When I try to connect with my MBP I it tries and then gets greyed out in the top with the exclamation point. It says:Â
Alert: No Internet ConnectionÂ
When I have tried to "fix" using the normal processes when clicking on it it says it cannot help me. I have researched and cleared the network settings in the keychain access. There was another thing that said to delete the apps.apple.alf.pfile or something like that but when I went to the area in Library/Preferences that file didnt exist. I need my Macbook to access the Internet.Â
I am running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3Â It is a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3

I have a MacBook Air that is refusing to connect to the home network. The MacBook is a late 2011 model 3,1 core 2 duo, 4Gb RAM 128Gb SSD connecting to a virgin media super hub. Tried the hub with and without enabled security. Sometime the MacBook sees the hub when you try to connect it immediately errors with could not join..... A network timeout occurred. Â The Bluetooth seems to be just as flaky. Won't connect to my iPhone?Thinking the wifi/Bluetooth card may be dodgy. Â

I have a MacBook Air. WIFI has been working just fine, until yesterday, after I turned it off to use a LAN network via USB adapter. Ever since I have not been able to reconnect via WIFI, and I get the message (that a lot of people get) of "wifi has the sel-assigned IP address and will not connect to the Internet." I've tried restart, shut-down and wait, tossed preferences, removed preferred networks, renewed DHCP Lease, all repeatedly, but to no avail.Â
the strange thing was, today I was somewhere that had 801.11g and 801.11n networks, and I was able to connect on the g network, but not on n. And what was more strange, was that the same Ethernet Lan connection I used yesterday no longer allows me to connect to the Internet, even though the sidebar says Ethernet was connected and showed green light.Â
At the same time my iPhone and iPad can both connect to any of the networks.Â

Just bought my daughter a 13.6" 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro, and it connects fine to my Apple TimeCapsule in 2.4 GHz & 5 GHz mode with no issues using DHCP. However, when my daughter brings the laptop to her mother's house, and attempts to connect it to her Cisco 2Wire160 (802.11g using WEP) router with DHCP, it doesn't connect. She can select the router, but it doesn't prompt for a password.
When she goes into System Preferences -> Network, WiFi say something about a self-assigned IP address of 169.x.x.x., when that router is chosen.
If I have her delete the router from Advanced in the Preferred Network section, and then connect to any of the neighbor's routers, she's immediately prompted for a password. Attempting to re-connect to the 2Wire160, still doesn't prompt for a password.

I turned it on and expecting it to connect to my wifi straight away but oh no, it was having none of it. I tried for 3 hours to figure out a way to connect it but it wouldn't work.I have since tried again yesterday and today but still no joy.It can't be the router as our iphones are connected to it fine.

I have recently moved to a new place and am now using a shared wifi. To begin with it was slow and kept dropping in and out, now it won't connect at all and says there is no IP address and the wifi icon has an exclamation mark. I can still connect my personal hotspot from my iphone to the same computer, however.

my PS3 and Mac are in my room, on the same desk, my wireless router is downstairs. The PS3 is getting a poor connection (40% signal) sometimes cutting out which makes it hard to download PS network stuff. My mac has a solid signal. What I want to do is connect my PS3 directly to my Mac using an ethernet cable. I just want to know how to get the PS3 to connect to the Macs connection through the wire. Apparently the PS3 needs to recognise the mac as a router?

Yesterday I purchased a new Macbook Pro and brought it to use on campus today and although the wireless status bar said I was connected I wasn't able to navigate the internet. It would sometimes prompt me to enter my atlas login information but after clicking submit wouldn't do anything or the apple homepage on safari would open and I wouldn't be able to navigate to anywhere else.I called the help desk and was told to go to the tech room, after going there and was told I couldn't be helped I was sent to another lady who called someone and by merely restarting my laptop I was able to navigate the internet. After that I went back to the building I spend all my time in and the I was back to square one. I have searched numerous forums with similar issues and attempted as much as I understood and could and am still unable to connect. Please help, I need so badly to be able to connect to wifi on this computer while at school!

Since about 2 days ago, my wifi on my Macbook air running 10.7.3 Lion does not connect to any wireless network, whether it's naked, WEP encrypted, or WP2 encrypted. It fails on 'Network Settings' Network Status step (Wi-fi and Wi-fi settings are 'green'). In fact, I can use my other Macbook running 10.7.2 Lion as well as my Android phone to connect to the wireless networks my Macbook air cannot connect to. Â
What I find really weird is I tried re-installing Lion on my Macbook air using the 'command-R' key on bootup. I was able to successfully connect to my WEP encrypted router during the re-install. But once it was done and re-booted I once again cannot connect to any wifi.Â
So something really funny is going on while OS-X is fully booted on my Macbook air.Â
This is pretty crummy situation to be in because the Macbook airs don't have a default ethernet jack built into it, so the computer is somewhat useless.
