Windows On Mac :: Running Program Without Installation On Crossover
Jul 29, 2009
There is lots of coverage regarding how to install software on crossover 8.0, but there is nothing that I can find regarding programs that require you simply to run them, without installation. I try and click them, and for less than a second, an image bounces above the crossover icon, but then it stops.

I've been meaning to sign up for ages but only now am I getting around to it.Anyway, here is my question.I have been running Linux for quite some time, and am fairly adept at using terminal, WINE, etc. As with most people, I still cannot completely avoid Windows (Borderlands is addictive ok?) and I still use MSN, seeing as 95% of the people I know use it, not Yahoo messenger, AIM or Skype. Which is a nuisance for me, because while I like Adium, it really does suck compared to the real MSN client. And as usual, Microsoft pretends to be nice to Apple "developing software for it" while making sure its products are crippled so people either need to run CrossOver / Wine or Parallels / VMware to use it inside OS X, or create a boot camp partition for Windows. This doesn't make me want to use Windows, it makes me even more glad I purchased a Macbook.Ranting aside, I find the Wine client for Mac kind of 2nd rate compared to the Linux version.Installing winetricks fails miserably, where on Linux it was simple. Also, the lack of a decent DMG file or package makes installing it that little bit more difficult, I've never had good luck at installing things via terminal, even on Linux. My question is, has anyone found a way to install Wine and Winetricks on Mac to install MSN messenger?-IMPORTANT NOTE-I have Adium installed, as well as Microsoft Messenger, aMSN and I've tried basically all the other clients out there. Do not suggest these as solutions. This is about how to install the OFFICIAL Windows Live Messenger on Mac OS X using Wine, CrossOver or another method.

I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro, the new unibody ones, and I installed Windows XP, using BootCamp.
I made it a 29 or so GB partition, so it used the FAT32 formatting.
The program I tried to install is the eyeQ speed reading program, and the laptop exceeds every single one of the recommended requirements.
The problem comes when I am attempting to install the program, I keep getting an error message in which it says "This program cannot run on a computer with less than 64 megabytes of ram."
Last time I checked my laptop has 4 GB of ram, and it says the same thing when I checked it while running Windows XP.
My only guess, which I made while typing this, was that I should have formatted the Windows partition using NTSF.

I have installed windows xp pro through fusion 2 in my 15' macbook pro, the memory it gets shared is 512mb and the hard drive gets 40GB. Is it enough to run accounting and office softwares with total satisfaction? Secondly, can I run windows compatible program through the use of fusion 2 without running windows os everytime? Does that way save power to extend power life? Additionally, I just found that the white background color of the accounting program really hurts my eyes. Is there certain ways to make white background color look moderate to the eyes?

Whenever I to open Safari, over 80 windows open immediately. My homepages are two websties and I'll get probably 30 or so windows with my Home "pages" combination, and then another 50 of windows of sites I visted recently. If I proceed to close the windows out, Would reinstalling Safari work? Or does this look like a virus and should I just restore from my time machine backup? My most recent backup is roughly 1 week old and my external has not been connected since this began to happen. It's worth noting this only happens to Safari--Firefox works perfectly fine. No other odd behaviors (ie. system lag, program crashes, etc.) have appeared.

Has anyone tried playing Windows games using Crossover Games for Mac? It fully supports Steam and lots of other games. Just wondering as it might bring performance improvements using it over playing them on Windows. Just wondering.

So i got the crossover demo cause i don't really wanna buy it if it sucks for the games i wanted to play. I got an Mac but have a couple of windows games i would like to play without having to install windows on my mac. I installed the game and got the disks and whatnot in and out without a hitch, but when i try to start the game it tells me i have to insert disk 1. So i was wondering if someone could explain how to get around this problem. given that i know very little about computers i would prefer a relatively simple explanation.

I am trying to follow the following guide to do a triple boot, but I am stuck in Windows 7 installation
triple boot snow leopard, windows 7, & ubuntu
I have done the following:
1. Did a clean installation of OS X Snow Leopard on hard drive (Not yet partitioned the hard drive)
2. Installed rEFIt
I am not sure what the poster means by making sure it works by pressing the option button. I am assuming it means that I will be able to see the options I can choose when I press option? (I do see options to pick either "Hard Drive" or whatever disc in the DVD)
3. Partitioned 30 GB (or was it 40 GB? x.x I forgot sorry) space in Boot Camp Assistant for Windows installation. Chose the option to install Windows later.
4. Inserted OS X Snow Leopard installation disc and boot from there.
5. Opened up the Disk Utility and partitioned a hard drive (called Hard Drive_2) via the Partition section as instructed by the guide. Formatted in MAc OS Extended (Journaled)
So now, in that area I see "Hard Drive", "Hard Drive_2" and "BOOT CAMP" (so I am assuming that is what the poster meant by "3 partitions".
6. Restarted the computer with Windows installation disc.
Problems occur right here:
Problem 1: I do not see anything called "C something" as the poster said. But I do see something called "Boot Camp"
Problem 2: All the partitions that are available says that "Windows 7 can't be installed". So my question is am I supposed to "delete" a specific partition to install it?
I have pictures of the screen which I will upload later if this isn't clear enough.

I'm going to be formatting my Windows side either way I think, and right now it has XP but I also own Vista, so I could install that as well. Here are the games I'll mostly be playing:
-Command and Conquer (All the way from Red Alert 2 to CNC 3)
-Counter-Strike (Condition Zero and Source if possible)
-Day of Defeat (Original from CS Mod)

when I lost my entire collection of PC games, I've gone through the process of making a .iso file of all of the games I've purchased. I have a few games in .iso files sitting on my mac desktop. For some reason, I cannot install Windows Vista on bootcamp anymore, as whenever I try to start up, I get an error saying something like the file "Wmilib" is missing or something, and I can't repair it using the startup disk no matter what. Which leads me to crossovers. I spent my money on it, and am hoping I didn't waste it. Whenever I tell Crossover to load from my mounted .iso file, and hit the "proceed" button, it takes me to the top drop-down menu, where it asks me to select a program to install.
The only problem is that I want to install from my mounted .iso file, and not from the list of supported programs, which is stupid. I've also tried just directly opening the "Setup.exe" file right with Crossover, and that still does nothing, which is very frustrating. Is it even possible to install games on crossover using a .iso file? And if so, what am I doing wrong, that whenever I hit "proceed" button it takes me right to the list of supported software and WON'T LET ME INSTALL without choosing one?

I am trying to figure out a way to monitor ANY changes made by a program during installation. I previously used Appzapper and AppCleaner but they do not truly find everything. Is there a way to run an installer through a program that will monitor any changes it makes and output it to a log file?

I just installed Aperture 3.6 in Yosemite on my new Mac - after the installation I agreed to use one library for iPhoto and Aperture - next the installation appears to have imported over 3000 program / Resource images and stored them in my Iphoto librarys and projects and in Aperture? The images look like thumbnails to low resolution clip art and some date back to 2006.

I have a Macbook OS X that is about four and a half years old. One day, when I tried to open itunes, the itunes symbol came up on my dock, bounced a few times, and then disappeared. It won't open anymore. The same thing has now happened with the installer program. When I download anything and click on it to install it, the installer icon comes up on the dock, bounces a few times, and then disappears.

How do you run multiple instances in OS X? Like I'm using the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client and I want to connect to multiple machines at the same time, but I can't. It only opens once. In Windows XP, I can open multiple terminal sessions and multiple notepad windows at the same time.
Is there some key combination + mouse click to start a new instance?

I seem to be rather confused after reading so many websites which say its possible to install windows 7 upgrade over xp by custom install in bootcamp.
I purchased a windows 7 upgrade which I have downloaded as a ".img" file.
However, bootcamp doesnt recognize my .img disc.
I have tried converting the .img to a .iso, and then burning the .iso as a iso disc, but still no luck. (Im not sure if its because of Active iso software Im using to burn the discs or if im doing something wrong.)
I have a legit version of XP already running via bootcamp.

A few months ago I installed a sync program on my G4 PPC running OSX to try and sync a cell phone I no longer have. It never did work for the phone. So, I found the file under applications and drug it to the trash thinking it was gone. Well it wasn't. Now every time I plug in my ipod it pops up "Sync alert". It wants me to sync my ipod with it but I don't want to. I don't even remember what the program is called, but it does not seem to be showing up in the finder or in the spotlight. I want this program completely gone, I have no use for it.

I have a Blackbook, it's about 3 years old now and the fan speed has increased to a very high level. There aren't any programs running in the background, this just simply happens when I leave the computer on. I'm assuming it's because there is dust buildup on the internal parts, but it's odd that it progressed from being fine to the stat that it is in today in the matter of days. Is there a way to clean the inside? Apple technician to have a look at it?

I've succesfully installed Windows 7 on my Macbook Pro mid-2009 with OS X 10.5.8 via Bootcamp 2.0. However, I have a problem:
When I insert my OS X Leopard install DVD into Windows 7 to install the Bootcamp drivers, the setup.exe only displays two options and both are apperantly related to the Macbook Air:
One of the options is to install OS X from an external source related to the Macbook Air and the other options is sharing of CD/DVD-drive for the Macbook Air.
I can't seem to locate the Bootcamp drivers. I've tried both my OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard installation DVD's but with the same result.
I've been thinking that the drivers could be located in a folder on the OS X installation DVD, but since I can't right-click in Windows the folder is hard to reach.
Have any of you guys experienced this?
