I just got a MBP 13" and I want to run some video converting programs while the lid is closed (I don't like the idea of leaving my laptop's screen open at night) but I can't disable sleep mode while the lid is closed.

I'll be working with some things that need to be printed out and some that are for web only. So I'm guessing I'll need to use different colour profiles depending on what I'm doing, is that right? Can anyone recommend some to me?1. Is it possible to close my macbook pro yet still have it working through my monitor? I have a wireless keyboard so it'd be preferable if I close close the mac and run the monitor from it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedA lot of times, when I close the flash intense web sites, my fans won't stop running until I go into activity monitor and force quit flash. This is very irritating and kills my battery life. I feel like I am constantly playing the sims 3 even if I am not doing anything. Also, are there varying levels of how much flash you're using? For example, if you're on youtube is that just as bad as being on macrumors and looking at flash based ad banners?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 15-inch MacBook Pro, the new unibody ones, and I installed Windows XP, using BootCamp.
I made it a 29 or so GB partition, so it used the FAT32 formatting.
The program I tried to install is the eyeQ speed reading program, and the laptop exceeds every single one of the recommended requirements.
The problem comes when I am attempting to install the program, I keep getting an error message in which it says "This program cannot run on a computer with less than 64 megabytes of ram."
Last time I checked my laptop has 4 GB of ram, and it says the same thing when I checked it while running Windows XP.
My only guess, which I made while typing this, was that I should have formatted the Windows partition using NTSF.
Im currently doing some video converting using handbrake and I was just wondering if its ok to do this for a prolonged period of time? I have 7 movies to do, and am currently on the 3rd one. They take about 30 minutes each to complete and my cpu is currently at 84C. It fluctuates anywhere from 80C to 87C. Im just wondering if I should maybe give the cpu a break or if I can just do them all in one sitting?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI would like to run a Macbook Pro Retina (2014) with the lid closed and all video and audio via HDMI routed to an external monitor (Samsung Syncmaster from 2010). Is this possible? When I try this, no sound is transferred to the external monitor and I cannot operate the Macbook Pro with the lid closed. As soon as I close the lid, it cuts the signal to the external screen. I’ve tried looking for previous posts but they’re about MCP’s connecting via Thunderbolt or DVI.

1. Activity Monitor shows 19 packets in/sec, 22 packets out/sec, currently at 26024 packets in and 24996 out since rebooting maybe 10 minutes ago)
2. iStat shows 4k in/out per sec
3. My router's activity light incessantly blinks
4. My router won't light up at the initial login, so the issue only happens with my current user account
When disabling all internet activity through Intego's firewall, my router also stops. Amusingly, Activity Monitor continues to show packets being sent and received. (I didn't see anything in Activity Monitor that would show me which process(es) are using the network as well...)
I can't seem to find any PID or process names out of the ordinary, but usually there should be no activity when there's no activity.
I do keep OS X updated as often as possible, but that doesn't mean something wicked this way comes...
Are there apps I can use that will tell me what process is sending these mystery packets?
Is there any maintenance things I need to do to keep my Macbook running smoothly? Is there anywhere that files build up which i need to delete etc... like the temp internet file on a PC?

I have searched everywhere and can not get a good answer. I just bought myself a new imac and this is my first mac. I used to use convertxtodvd on my pc.
I read that toast titanium does a good job of converting any video file to dvd but you can not download it to try it out, you just have to buy it. I do not want to waste my money if it does not turn out to be the quality I am looking for.

I was wondering if anyone has made the effort to actually convert their entire library of videos into m4v format so that it's all apple hardware compatible or if you have duplicates of everything to preserve high quality 'originals' and lower quality iphone/ipod conversions etc.
Just a simple question of how you manage your video library I suppose. I also wonder if anyone even uses iTunes to manage their videos? I've tried Handbrake but I never get any of the settings right, and it seems as if Handbrake won't take a m2ts file and convert it to mp4 or m4v without problems.

There are many video converters on mac but I 've not found something to suit my needs.
Videomonkey(buggy?), roadmovie, mpeg streamclip etc.
Sometimes we do not want just a beautiful interface but also get the job done the way we want it.
So this is what I want:
- specify the exact video format I want my video to be converted. Not just a selection 'for ipod, for apple tv' and so on. So what? Am I supposed to make several conversions in order to see what each so labeled options mean in reality? I try to export to .mp4 and this should be a straightforward process.
- most important: limit output filesize. Specify the desirable filesize and converter should output a file that has this filesize. If anyone has seen convertxtodvd in windows, he should understand what I mean.
