Aug 26, 2009I have a spareimage file and whenever I try to open it, I get an error saying "no mountable file systems".
It's a file that when mounted, I put private files in to encrypt them. I have about ~70GB of information on there that would be devestating if lost.

Dec 20, 2005I haven't been able to mount .dmg files for a few weeks now. Cleared my cache and tried again. No go. Followed some advice to move my com.apple.kernelcaches file and my Extensions.kextcache to my desktop...still no go. Warning reason reads "no mountable file systems".

Software :: Unable To Open Encrypted File / Recovering The Original File?
Aug 23, 2009ok trying not to get a panic attack here. I downloaded espionge to encrypt my valuable files and while it was encrypting (AES 128 bit i think) the program froze and I had to Force quit it. Now I try to open my file (that i was trying to encrypt) and it looks f*^&# up. I can't open it, and when I tried to unmount the partially encrypted file, espionage gave me errors that it couldnt recover the original file.
I had basically all my life's valuable accumulated data in that folder (it was 10 Gb+). I will praise anyone to the end of my days that can somehow tell me how to restore my file to its original state. Usefull info:
1) AM planning to pay gazillions for recovery software if need be, but free alternatives are always better.
2) I never secure delete if that helps
3) I still have the .sparseimage for the file created by espionage. (P.S. sparseimage's size looks really close to the orignal, also 10 Gb +).
4) Newest version of OSX, and have an IMac.
5) after incident I haven't done anything (no installations or downloads) apart from writing this.
6) the encrypted file was gonna be in HFS+ i think

Oct 24, 2010my roommate and I want to put together a Mac- or Linux-based file server. I have an old iBook lying around, so it can either run Mac OS X 10.3, or some version of Yellow Dog Linux. (I'd prefer to keep it a Mac system.) I can set up our router to push requests on a certain port to that laptop, with a static IP, but we're concerned with file safety. We're going to be keeping all our personal information on there including any code projects, pictures, homework, etc. My roommate attends university, and will be accessing the server from the uni. wireless network. As such, privacy/encryption is a big concern for us. (We don't want people packet sniffing and getting any personal information or data.)
Does anyone have any suggestions for setting up this kind of server? Hopefully it will be a fun project.
OS X V10.7 Lion :: Using File Vault On A Laptop That Contains Some Encrypted Disk Images
Feb 14, 2012I keep several encrypted disk images in the Dropbox folder on my laptop. Can I use File Vault to encrypt the laptop when it contains these already encrypted .dmg and .sparsebundle files? Or will this double encryption harm them?
(These folders need to be individually encrypted to reside in an encrypted form on the Dropbox server. If I unencrypt them and use only File Vault, then when I'm on the computer and File Vault is off, the folders will sync to Dropbox in their unencrypted form. I want to keep these folders individually encrypted for security on the Dropbox server, then use FIle Vault on top of that to secure the rest of my laptop in case of theft).

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Reading A File Vault 2 Encrypted External Drive?
Feb 17, 2012If I encrypt an external drive using File Vault 2 (Lion 10.7.3) as a Time Machine backup from my current laptop, then later purchase a new laptop and attempt to read that encrypted backup, will there be any problems to consider?
1) I expect that, since the password will be stored on my current laptop, there would be a problem reading the password on a new laptop
2) I was told that opening a File Vault 2 encrypted external drive would require the same laptop, as the encryption creates a match of serial numbers between the laptop and the encrypted drive.

Mar 12, 2012This appears to be a pretty known error. The only problem is, no solution seems to fix it. Lately I have been trying to download a few trials for software such as Little Snitch and Ableton(they both are amazing products from what I have heard). The only issue is for both of them the Disk Mounter gives me an error "No Mountable File Systems". This just started recently so I really have no idea what is going on. I tried opening them with Disk Utility as well and I get the same error. I also tried terminal commands and got the same error. There really seems to be no winning on this one. I really need to fix this ASAP.

Hardware :: Small File Size Limit To The FAT32 File System?
Jan 19, 2009I was wondering if there is a small file size limit to the FAT32 file system. I recently picked up a 1TB WD external with Firewire (pre-formatted FAT32) and have been transferring movies and such fine, but I just tried transferring an HD movie (5GB) and some large .dmg's/.iso's and they all just fail with an error.
Is this a size limitation, and will i need to reformat the drive to fix it, or is there something else I'm missing?

PowerPC :: Unable To Start System After Update / File System Got Corrupted?
Jul 19, 2007I am a proud owner of a MAC powerbook G4 for just over 3 years now. It runs MAc OX 10.3. For the last two weeks i have been having issues. First it started to be very slow. Then it would not boot up and i got a blue screen. I ran the file system checks from the OS X and it complained about the volume being bad and said it could not be repaired. i decided to reinstall the whole thing and did a complete erase and install. IT booted up fine. The software updater asked permission to update which i agreed.
After the update was over, the software updater had more updates. I guessed that it was probably giving me updates in the chronological order. During a particular update, it gave the blue screen and "please restart" ... and when i rebooted it did not come up... just a blue screen... i verified the filesystem using the diagnostic tool and it again said it was corrupt .... I have done this twice now and i have a feeling it happened when i was updating the same batch of software updates.... sometimes my software updater would crash everytime i launch it.....

Jul 20, 2009While copying files from my digital camera xD card onto my mini, the Card reader un-mounted itself and remounted its self several times, I have no idea why...Now I have a load of 0Kb files in the folder where I was copying to. I can delete these, but they come up with a "file in use" error message so I need to click for each file to be deleted... ~350 left I did try a restart thinking that may clear up any "pending" file transfers from the system to allow them to be deleted like a normal file

Apr 29, 2010however, installation doesn't work because i dont have the actual "disk" in my mbp when i try to install (i'm simply running the application install off the mounted image). is there any way i can take the cdr and turn it into a mountable volume that shows up as a CD and not just any old volume?

Sep 28, 2010 Hopefully this is the correct place to post my question. Yesterday I inserted a movie DVD into the internal drive of my MacPro 3,1 and received the error message, "The disc you inserted is not readable by this computer". I tried several different movie discs, some old, some new releases I just purchased and I get the same message. Data discs work fine but not movie DVDs.
I also noticed that my Mac can no longer mount an ISO or DMG file. I get an error saying "No Mountable filesystems". I have repaired permissions, restarted, disconnected all external peripherals, etc. Pretty much all the basic stuff you try when your Mac isn't behaving as you'd expect. The odd thing is that it just started behaving this way within the last two days. DVDs played fine before and I could mount any ISO or DMG file. Only thing that is different is I ran the most recent security update from Apple when it popped up.

Feb 5, 20091. Whenever I try to open files on my Mac such as Firefox and Windows Messenger for Mac, they appear on the Dock for 2 seconds, bouncing up and down like if you open a program, then disappear off the Dock and nothing happens. How can I open these programs?

OS X Mavericks :: BOOTCAMP Partition Not Visible In Finder - Not Mountable In Disk Utility
Sep 3, 2014Did a fresh Bootcamp install of Windows 7 on my MBA running 10.9.4, switched back and forth a few times and now the BOOTCAMP partition doesn't show up in the left pane in Finder. I hopped into Disk Utility to see what was going on and it was there, just not mounted, so I clicked mount, was told it couldn't be mounted, and it suggested I run first aid on it. I clicked Verify, nothing useful to me, then Repair, and got quite a lot of feedback that I do not understand, and then after that it was still unmountable.
I tried to copy everything it said into a pastebin because it was very long with lots of starting and stopping and counting percents inbetween, but it was over 500kb and that's the limit for free users on pastebin, so here's a trimmed version. [URL] .... I tried booting into Windows after that, and it jumped into System Repair. Apparently, according to Windows, my Boot Manager is missing or corrupt... and since I still can't access it from the Mac side of things, I thought I'd just wipe the partition in BootCamp Utility and start over.
Except instead, I get this error: "Your disk could not be restored to a single partition.An error occurred while restoring the disk to a single partition."
Disk Utility let me wipe it but I still can't mount it, either, again suggesting I run first aid on it (this does nothing). I can't boot into the Mac's Recovery mode either. It just jumps straight to Internet Recovery. When I hold option upon boot, all three partitions show up (Mac, Recovery, Windows), but when I click the recovery one it loads for a bit and then the laptop just instantly shuts off.... Have I corrupted my internal harddrive perchance?
