Applications :: Won't Set Up Encrypted File Server

Oct 24, 2010

my roommate and I want to put together a Mac- or Linux-based file server. I have an old iBook lying around, so it can either run Mac OS X 10.3, or some version of Yellow Dog Linux. (I'd prefer to keep it a Mac system.) I can set up our router to push requests on a certain port to that laptop, with a static IP, but we're concerned with file safety. We're going to be keeping all our personal information on there including any code projects, pictures, homework, etc. My roommate attends university, and will be accessing the server from the uni. wireless network. As such, privacy/encryption is a big concern for us. (We don't want people packet sniffing and getting any personal information or data.)

Does anyone have any suggestions for setting up this kind of server? Hopefully it will be a fun project.

Software :: Unable To Open Encrypted File / Recovering The Original File?

Aug 23, 2009

ok trying not to get a panic attack here. I downloaded espionge to encrypt my valuable files and while it was encrypting (AES 128 bit i think) the program froze and I had to Force quit it. Now I try to open my file (that i was trying to encrypt) and it looks f*^&# up. I can't open it, and when I tried to unmount the partially encrypted file, espionage gave me errors that it couldnt recover the original file.

I had basically all my life's valuable accumulated data in that folder (it was 10 Gb+). I will praise anyone to the end of my days that can somehow tell me how to restore my file to its original state. Usefull info:

1) AM planning to pay gazillions for recovery software if need be, but free alternatives are always better.

2) I never secure delete if that helps

3) I still have the .sparseimage for the file created by espionage. (P.S. sparseimage's size looks really close to the orignal, also 10 Gb +).

4) Newest version of OSX, and have an IMac.

5) after incident I haven't done anything (no installations or downloads) apart from writing this.

6) the encrypted file was gonna be in HFS+ i think

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Using File Vault On A Laptop That Contains Some Encrypted Disk Images

Feb 14, 2012

I keep several encrypted disk images in the Dropbox folder on my laptop. Can I use File Vault to encrypt the laptop when it contains these already encrypted .dmg and .sparsebundle files? Or will this double encryption harm them?

(These folders need to be individually encrypted to reside in an encrypted form on the Dropbox server. If I unencrypt them and use only File Vault, then when I'm on the computer and File Vault is off, the folders will sync to Dropbox in their unencrypted form. I want to keep these folders individually encrypted for security on the Dropbox server, then use FIle Vault on top of that to secure the rest of my laptop in case of theft).

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Reading A File Vault 2 Encrypted External Drive?

Feb 17, 2012

If I encrypt an external drive using File Vault 2 (Lion 10.7.3) as a Time Machine backup from my current laptop, then later purchase a new laptop and attempt to read that encrypted backup, will there be any problems to consider?

1) I expect that, since the password will be stored on my current laptop, there would be a problem reading the password on a new laptop

2) I was told that opening a File Vault 2  encrypted external drive would require the same laptop, as the encryption creates a match of serial numbers between the laptop and the encrypted drive.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Web-mail Not Working Since Installing File-maker Server 12?

Apr 18, 2012

Since installing Filemaker Server 12 on our Lion Server 10.7.3, the Webmail is no longer working. I know with previous installations of Filemaker Server I have been asked whether I wanted to keep the system version of PHP or install PHP which comes with Filemaker Server, but I don't recall being prompted about it on this occasion. Previously I had always opted to retain the system PHP.

And from the WAN I get just a screen saying webmail is turned off and that I can turn it on by using the Server app on the server (It is already checked in the server app).

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Small Office File Server Options?

May 31, 2012

We are a small business with 2 mac mini's, 2 macbook laptops and another macbook pro laptop who is remote. (the remote laptop is not a deal breaker) We are beginning to have a nightmare with file storage, everyone is saving their own work to their own workstation and it's becoming difficult to share files etc. Basically, our requirements for a solution are:

- Sensible file server, allowing all on-site computers to use the server as a main file storage

- Something I can back all computers up with from time machine

- Useful to restrict certain users to certain files

- Useful to have external access to files when off site and via the likes of iPad etc.

I've looked in a NAS Raid drive and the OsX Lion Server and also the Time capsule and am just so confused at what to buy. Although the calendar sharing options etc. on the server would be useful, we can also do this via icloud. It's mainly the file access that is such a problem.  I wonder whether a time capsule would be good enough as a file server - which we then back up to the cloud to secure the data.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Server File Sharing Crashes?

Jun 2, 2012

We have a brand new Mac Pro (12 core with 64GB of RAM) running OS X Lion Server in a corporate environment. The server is running only file sharing and software update servers, and we have around 40 users who need to be connected over AFP at all times. This company runs 24/7 and we have an XSan environment using an ATTO Celerity 8GB 4 channel fiber card (84EN) along with a 6 port 10GB Ethernet card. The Ethernet card is configured in a link aggregation bond using ports 1-4. The idea is that clients who do not have fiber cards installed on their machines can still connect to the SAN via Ethernet and this file server. They AFP connect to the share, and of course the share is the SAN. It's a single mount point and everyone has read/write access.

The issue is that this machine keeps crashing (multiple times per day) and I cannot find any reason why. Syslog shows nothing of value and I've called into Apple Enterprise Support who also brought nothing to the table.

We initially had SMB and AFP file sharing activated but as soon as a Windows 7 client connected the machine was brought down. So, I disabled SMB via terminal (sudo serveradmin stop smb) and deactivated it via the Server app for the share point). That at least allows the machine to be up for 4-6 hours before crashing again.

This is seemingly the simplest of setups for file sharing and I would've thought that this beast of a machine would be able to handle being a file server without issue for far more than 40 clients. I'm seeing high CPU usage, which Apple support told me was perfectly normal (around 60% on the kernel_task process and around 55% on the AppleFileServer process). It also seems to consume all 64GB of memory, though it shows 60GB as inactive, but at the same time it's paging in and out.

Virtually all of the clients are running Lion (10.7.4), the server itself is running 10.7.4. There are a few ethernet connected clients running 10.6 along with two running 10.5. As I mentioned I disabled SMB so there are no Windows computers connecting to this machine at this time (though it would be nice to get that functionality back if AFP can be stabilized).

This company simply cannot be down, especially not multiple times per day. The only way to bring things back and running from a crash is to hard boot the machine via the power button as you cannot perform a restart or a shutdown. Once the machine comes back up everything is back to working order for a few more hours until it happens again.

Applications :: Remote Control Mac Directly From Browser (SSL Encrypted)

Dec 15, 2009

I switched from a pc to a mac recently. I had Remotely Anywhere on my PC, but I can't find a mac alternative. I already looked into alternative like logmein, but these web site are censored in my company. I need a software exactly like Remotely Anywhere. Software is installed on the PC/Mac, just need to install ActiveX in the browser, and you get to remote control your PC/Mac directly from the browser and in SSL encrypted.

I also looked into Apple Remote Desktop, but this won't work, because the port that will try to use (for instance, 5900) will be blocked by firewall company. I need a full HTTP(S) compliant software. If any of you ever uses Remotely Anywhere, you should get the picture.

PowerPC :: Setting Up G4 As File Server?

Jun 18, 2008

As you probably noticed from looking at my sig, I have a new G4. It has been pretty heavily upgraded, with a 1.4GHz CPU, 1.3GB RAM, two 160GB drives in RAID, a dual-layer DVD burner, a Geforce 6200LE 256MB, an Airport card, and Leopard. I bought it because:

a) Didn't have a Mac
b) wanted to set up a file server

So, how would this work? What I want it to do is serve music, pictures, movies, and documents throughout my house, and I actually need it to work with a few operating systems:

- Jaguar
- Tiger
- Leopard
- XP
- Vista

I don't have to go out and get 10.5 Server, do I?

Mac Pro :: File Server - 6TB Of Space To Share

May 10, 2010

I am planning on getting the new 2010 MP's whenever they come out, its been a long time coming, and I need a monster desktop for my work so I decided what the hell. Here is the setup I would like to have.
Bay 1: SSD -System Disk (super fast application opening etc.)
Bay 2: Normal 2TB
Bay 3: Normal 2TB
Bay 4: Normal 2TB
Giving me 6TB of file space to share.

My question is two fold:
1. I want most of my space on the drives so its either RAID 0 or 5 for me, is it possible to do a RAID 5 without paying $750 for a RAID controller?
2. Is it possible to move your home folder to the 6TB RAID? I know you can move it to other drives, never seen a RAID discussed though. Not only would this give me access to all my files on the go, but it gives it pretty limitless space versus the SSD.

OS X Server :: How To Disable File Permissions In Mac

Dec 31, 2008

I recently started working for a web design company, we use a Mac G5 Tower with Leopard Server installed. What I need to do is, if at all possible, disable file permissions so that anyone on the network can make changes to a file without having to change the permissions first. Right now, after a file is created the permissions have to be changed to allow everyone else to make changes if needed. Is there a way to disable file permissions in order to avoid this problem altogether? I personally run Linux, as such I am not a Mac guru so any help will most likely need to be in basic terms so I don't get lost.

OS X :: SMB/File Transfer Slow With Windows Server 2003?

Are there any tricks specific to Windows Server 2003 or anything new to make this work like normal? It's simple file transfer over SMB, seems like at the 5th iteration of Mac OS X we'd have better speeds.
