I have a spareimage file and whenever I try to open it, I get an error saying "no mountable file systems".
It's a file that when mounted, I put private files in to encrypt them. I have about ~70GB of information on there that would be devestating if lost.
I haven't been able to mount .dmg files for a few weeks now. Cleared my cache and tried again. No go. Followed some advice to move my com.apple.kernelcaches file and my Extensions.kextcache to my desktop...still no go. Warning reason reads "no mountable file systems".

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis appears to be a pretty known error. The only problem is, no solution seems to fix it. Lately I have been trying to download a few trials for software such as Little Snitch and Ableton(they both are amazing products from what I have heard). The only issue is for both of them the Disk Mounter gives me an error "No Mountable File Systems". This just started recently so I really have no idea what is going on. I tried opening them with Disk Utility as well and I get the same error. I also tried terminal commands and got the same error. There really seems to be no winning on this one. I really need to fix this ASAP.

I was wondering if there is a small file size limit to the FAT32 file system. I recently picked up a 1TB WD external with Firewire (pre-formatted FAT32) and have been transferring movies and such fine, but I just tried transferring an HD movie (5GB) and some large .dmg's/.iso's and they all just fail with an error.
Is this a size limitation, and will i need to reformat the drive to fix it, or is there something else I'm missing?
When ever I copy some files or create a file in my external USB drive which is a FAT32 one. file permissions are not preserved. All files/folders has 777 are permission. Is this how it work in mac or am I missing something?

I am a proud owner of a MAC powerbook G4 for just over 3 years now. It runs MAc OX 10.3. For the last two weeks i have been having issues. First it started to be very slow. Then it would not boot up and i got a blue screen. I ran the file system checks from the OS X and it complained about the volume being bad and said it could not be repaired. i decided to reinstall the whole thing and did a complete erase and install. IT booted up fine. The software updater asked permission to update which i agreed.
After the update was over, the software updater had more updates. I guessed that it was probably giving me updates in the chronological order. During a particular update, it gave the blue screen and "please restart" ... and when i rebooted it did not come up... just a blue screen... i verified the filesystem using the diagnostic tool and it again said it was corrupt .... I have done this twice now and i have a feeling it happened when i was updating the same batch of software updates.... sometimes my software updater would crash everytime i launch it.....
While copying files from my digital camera xD card onto my mini, the Card reader un-mounted itself and remounted its self several times, I have no idea why...Now I have a load of 0Kb files in the folder where I was copying to. I can delete these, but they come up with a "file in use" error message so I need to click for each file to be deleted... ~350 left I did try a restart thinking that may clear up any "pending" file transfers from the system to allow them to be deleted like a normal file

I had a MacBook a while back and it broke. I managed to salvage the HD and the RAM. Soon, I am going to buy another MacBook (new white plastic, nvidia series) and I was wondering if I could just remove the HD of that machine and put in the old HD from my last MacBook? Would it still work like the last one did, or would there be differences because of new hardware? Not sure about this at the moment.

View 24 Replies View RelatedMac OS X just crashed while I was writing to my external hard drive; I rebooted my mac and the disk is now corrupted. My old partition is no longer mountable, nor can I fix it with Disk Utility. I get the following error when I try to verify/repair it:

however, installation doesn't work because i dont have the actual "disk" in my mbp when i try to install (i'm simply running the application install off the mounted image). is there any way i can take the cdr and turn it into a mountable volume that shows up as a CD and not just any old volume?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if anyone is uncomfortable with the future of doing all OS X updates in the App Store? I've always downloaded the combo updaters from Apple's website and installed from my hard drive. When I installed Lion I downloaded it from the App Store and then burned it onto a bootable DVD and installed Lion after booting off the DVD. And even before that I check the hard drive with disc utility and repair permissions before and after installation. Also shut down my mac and unplug all peripherals and then start back up. I've never seen apple suggest these things. So I wonder is Apple just a little too confident in OS X? Is OS X even more reliable than ever? Or am I just superstitious with the Mac voodoo?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install a full Lion system on a USB key. I am not talking about a Cracker Jack installer and disk utility thing. I am talking about a full useable system. Why would I want to do this? Let's see, I have a 3 month old MacBook Air with a failing SSD, a brand new Mac Pro with NO THUNDERBOLT jack, an over-designed FireWire to Thunderbolt dongle that Apple took 2 YEARS to develop and still has yet to bring to market (which may or may not support Target Disk Mode on FireWire Macs... like my brand new tower) and NO way to run Carbon Copy Cloner on a booted system that can see the failing SSD as a local disk. I'm sure I don't need to mention the kick in the pants that is Spotlight trying to index a failing drive, corrupting data as it does so. Sorry but I don't have access to a THIRD mac with Thunderbolt. Just these two very new machines. If there is no way to get the MacBook Air mounted in Target Disk Mode on another mac, I need to boot it from a System that is not corrupting files like crazy due to media failure. I can't use the brilliant new "Recovery Partition" thing they created because, well, that's also on the failing disk.
When I run the 10.7 installer on the MacBook it says this is an unsupported system. Years ago it was possible to install OSX to a disk other than the boot disk without rebooting the machine. Not any more. When I clone Mac OS Install ESD to a thumb drive and try to boot from it, I get the big X. When I try to make the USB key on the tower, after needlessly rebooting it, of course, using ANOTHER USB key with the ESD image, my target USB key (which is 64gb) is greyed out, and hence not selectable as a target volume for the installation.

Hopefully this is the correct place to post my question. Yesterday I inserted a movie DVD into the internal drive of my MacPro 3,1 and received the error message, "The disc you inserted is not readable by this computer". I tried several different movie discs, some old, some new releases I just purchased and I get the same message. Data discs work fine but not movie DVDs.
I also noticed that my Mac can no longer mount an ISO or DMG file. I get an error saying "No Mountable filesystems". I have repaired permissions, restarted, disconnected all external peripherals, etc. Pretty much all the basic stuff you try when your Mac isn't behaving as you'd expect. The odd thing is that it just started behaving this way within the last two days. DVDs played fine before and I could mount any ISO or DMG file. Only thing that is different is I ran the most recent security update from Apple when it popped up.

After trying to restart the laptop, it has now been stuck at the grey screen with the apple logo and the rotating circle. I have tried using disk utility and repairing the start up disk. Doing a safe reboot does not work.

I have a 13" mid 2009 MBP and due to issues with the superdrive I decided to buy the OWC data doubler kit and install it with a 120GB SSD from them. I also upgraded to 8GB RAM at the time but I do not believe that has anything to do with this. After I did this, my original HD freaked out and wouldn't even show up in target disk mode. Eventually I made a clone of the Snow Leopard install disks onto a USB stick using a friend's laptop and installed OSX fresh onto the SSD. Luckily I had a backup of everything so I have not lost anything. Even with the fresh install, however, I am having a lot of issues with the OS. When I try to boot the machine, it often takes 3, 4 or even 5 times to boot normally. As far as I remember, booting into safe mode works right away but that is obviously not a solution. Usually it starts by hanging at a blue screen once or twice, then I can get to the login screen but it is either kind of grayed out or it just freezes and I can't even move the mouse to type in my password. When I do safe mode it boots up without this issue, but even after that I often see the computer freeze up during use, which happened the first time I wrote this post. This problem also occurs when waking up from sleep. If the laptop goes to sleep by itself or I close it, I have to power cycle it to return to use. The keyboard will light up, but the screen never comes on so there is no way for me to log in. These issues are extremely frustrating and make me feel dumb for doing this in the first place, considering that everything worked ok before(minus the superdrive). Has anyone seen these issues before? Resetting PRAM and booting into single user mode are not helpful, I have tried them many, many times and I see the same issues. I saw somewhere else that I should try to remove the fonts, startup items, and loginwindow.plist files/folders and put them on the desktop, but even after doing that the issues persist.
