Desktops :: Mac Pro Suddenly Not Recognizing Discs / No Mountable Filesystems

Sep 28, 2010

Hopefully this is the correct place to post my question. Yesterday I inserted a movie DVD into the internal drive of my MacPro 3,1 and received the error message, "The disc you inserted is not readable by this computer". I tried several different movie discs, some old, some new releases I just purchased and I get the same message. Data discs work fine but not movie DVDs.

I also noticed that my Mac can no longer mount an ISO or DMG file. I get an error saying "No Mountable filesystems". I have repaired permissions, restarted, disconnected all external peripherals, etc. Pretty much all the basic stuff you try when your Mac isn't behaving as you'd expect. The odd thing is that it just started behaving this way within the last two days. DVDs played fine before and I could mount any ISO or DMG file. Only thing that is different is I ran the most recent security update from Apple when it popped up.

Desktops :: MAC Only Reads OS Discs / Won't Read Other Disks

Dec 17, 2010

I have an older Power Mac G5 that I had problems with, and hoped I could get a little help.I wanted to start fresh, so I booted the Mac OSX software disk that came with the computer, and I was able to get my computer back to factory fresh (software-wise). After I reloaded the OSX (and did all of the software updates from Apple), I tried loading a program from an original installation CD/DVD. It would not load--it tried, but eventually ejected the disk. This happened over and over--I tried different types of discs (music CDs, DVDs, software), and the ONLY CDS/DVDs that work are the MAC OSX installation discs. I have tried using a DVD lense cleaner and compressed air.

MacBook Pro :: It Suddenly Not Recognizing WD Passport

Jun 10, 2012

I have a MacBook Pro- purchased in September of 2011- that has now stopped recognizing my WD Passport. The Passport works fine with my wife's PC laptop, but is not showing up on the MBP. The light on the Passport flashes, but that's all. It does not show up in the Finder and Time Machine is unable to perform backup.

I have first restarted the MBP and then shut down and then turned the MBP back on. Neither time did anything. I have an older SimpleTech external that it now recognizes again- after appearing not to. After multiple attempts and using both USB ports, sadly have gotten nowhere.

Info:MacBookPro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Desktops :: Sound Suddenly Switched To Being Internal Speaker Only?

Oct 26, 2009

Peculiar problem. My sound suddenly switched to being internal speaker only, even though I have decklink HD Extreme card and was using it as my audio output the night before. Narrowed the problem down to anything being plugged in to the firewire ports - FW400 and FW800 ports and drives or even my Mini DV deck. When I plug anything into the firewire ports, trying to get to the sound settings in system preferences hangs, and all sound will only work on the internal speaker. This is a sudden problem and leaves me only being able to plug in esata external hard drives. There is some sort of conflict going on somewhere.

Mac Pro 2008
Mac Osx 10.5.8
Decklink HD Extreme card
Recently installed LaCie eSATA II PCI Express Card.
Use the machine mostly for video editing, so really need the external HDs.

OS X :: Lost Discs - Install Discs From The Computer

Mar 10, 2009

I came home for vacation and decided to reformat my imac g5 to get a fresh start. I backed up all my files, took out my leopard retail box, and was ready to go when I opened up the box, and noticed no disc. I have no idea where it went.I have the install discs from the computer when i got it, but it only has 10.4, so id rather not use them. I have the install discs from my macbook pro with 10.5, but I am pretty sure it will not work.So does anyone have any suggestions? Should I just go ahead and install 10.4 until and then just install 10.5 when i find it? (i really hate doing this, I hate having more than one version of an os installed)

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Mount All Filesystems "relatime"

Apr 29, 2012

Since I will be using a SSD instead of a HD soon, I'd like to reduce the disk Writes.

Essentially, the updates to the "Read a file or Dir" time stamp are not needed (at least by me) and I'd like to remove that. On Linux, the best option is to add the "relatime" option to the mount options (in /etc/fstab). "relatime" prevents the "read" time stamp updates on files or directories (except if the read access time would be less than the last write).

On Mac OS Lion, how would I do that?

- /etc/fstab does not seem to contain the current filesystems entries (like '/')

- where/what is the equivalent of /etc/fstab on Lion

- what is the "relatime" option on Lion (if there is one)?

OS X Mavericks :: BOOTCAMP Partition Not Visible In Finder - Not Mountable In Disk Utility

Sep 3, 2014

Did a fresh Bootcamp install of Windows 7 on my MBA running 10.9.4, switched back and forth a few times and now the BOOTCAMP partition doesn't show up in the left pane in Finder. I hopped into Disk Utility to see what was going on and it was there, just not mounted, so I clicked mount, was told it couldn't be mounted, and it suggested I run first aid on it. I clicked Verify, nothing useful to me, then Repair, and got quite a lot of feedback that I do not understand, and then after that it was still unmountable.

I tried to copy everything it said into a pastebin because it was very long with lots of starting and stopping and counting percents inbetween, but it was over 500kb and that's the limit for free users on pastebin, so here's a trimmed version. [URL] .... I tried booting into Windows after that, and it jumped into System Repair. Apparently, according to Windows, my Boot Manager is missing or corrupt... and since I still can't access it from the Mac side of things, I thought I'd just wipe the partition in BootCamp Utility and start over.

Except instead, I get this error: "Your disk could not be restored to a single partition. An error occurred while restoring the disk to a single partition."

Disk Utility let me wipe it but I still can't mount it, either, again suggesting I run first aid on it (this does nothing). I can't boot into the Mac's Recovery mode either. It just jumps straight to Internet Recovery. When I hold option upon boot, all three partitions show up (Mac, Recovery, Windows), but when I click the recovery one it loads for a bit and then the laptop just instantly shuts off.... Have I corrupted my internal harddrive perchance?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: "No Mountable File Systems"

Mar 12, 2012

This appears to be a pretty known error. The only problem is, no solution seems to fix it. Lately I have been trying to download a few trials for software such as Little Snitch and Ableton(they both are amazing products from what I have heard). The only issue is for both of them the Disk Mounter gives me an error "No Mountable File Systems". This just started recently so I really have no idea what is going on. I tried opening them with Disk Utility as well and I get the same error. I also tried terminal commands and got the same error. There really seems to be no winning on this one. I really need to fix this ASAP.

Intel Mac :: Why Won't It Take Discs

Jun 25, 2012

Whenever I place a disc in the drive it spits it out. No matter what disc.  I've tried restarting but that didn't work.  Just bought this 27" iMac about 2 years ago. I cost me around 2 grand with tax and some stuff the salesmen sold me to go with it like MIcrosoft office.  If the drive broke after only 2 years (and I've only used it maybe 10 times in all that time) then I will prob be asking for my money back.  I already know that apple will charge me out the @$$ to get it fixed if the drive is broke.  I am just hoping that there is something going on software wise that can be fixed. Please help if you have any information reguarding this issue.  This is a problem that is holding me back from doing work (a client sent me information via cd)  So I am loosing money every day that I do not have my drive working.

OS X :: Discs Not Mounting Consistently?

Oct 31, 2007

Ever since installing Leopard, I've noticed it is having problems consistently mounting discs, specifically my external USB drive (for Time Machine). Sometimes I plug it in and it shows up as a disc on my desktop (and viewable within Finder and by Time Machine); other times I'll plug it in an it doesn't show up any where (even after restarting OSX).

Not sure this is related, but I also noticed that a .dmg file I downloaded failed to mount (just got an error message). This time, when I restarted OSX when I tried launching it again, it worked.
