PowerPC :: Unable To Start System After Update / File System Got Corrupted?

Jul 19, 2007

I am a proud owner of a MAC powerbook G4 for just over 3 years now. It runs MAc OX 10.3. For the last two weeks i have been having issues. First it started to be very slow. Then it would not boot up and i got a blue screen. I ran the file system checks from the OS X and it complained about the volume being bad and said it could not be repaired. i decided to reinstall the whole thing and did a complete erase and install. IT booted up fine. The software updater asked permission to update which i agreed.

After the update was over, the software updater had more updates. I guessed that it was probably giving me updates in the chronological order. During a particular update, it gave the blue screen and "please restart" ... and when i rebooted it did not come up... just a blue screen... i verified the filesystem using the diagnostic tool and it again said it was corrupt .... I have done this twice now and i have a feeling it happened when i was updating the same batch of software updates.... sometimes my software updater would crash everytime i launch it.....

PowerPC :: IMac G5 (Non-iSight) Won't Start / System Freezing

Aug 18, 2009

A friend of mine has a G5 iMac that won't start. When you press the powerkey it tries to start, the power light glows, the screen goes grey and after a while the fans start whirring. Occasionally (twice in the past couple of days) it has started up, but it froze after a while. Other times the apple logo appears and the gear wheel starts turning but then it freezes.

I have tried booting from DVD, holding down the shift key and have taken the back off and pressed the wee button on the board.

Since my friend has the same model of iMac as me (they were bought at he same time and place) i tried the RAM that I took out of mine when I upgraded.

PowerPC :: G4 Munching On System 9 File

Apr 27, 2010

I had a mirror drive G4 1.25g, 1.5 g ram since it was brand new and it had problems from the start that just got worse over time. I still need to use it semi-regularly and so I would like to know if anyone here might have a clue what's going on. Of the long list of problems, I'll describe the ones that are the most frustrating! oh and by the way, I zapped pram and I have reinstalled everything from the original discs which made no difference at all.

1. When booting into 9 or classic, just about every other time or so I'll get a system error and I need to hold the power button to turn it off. Then I need to boot into X and replace the system file in the classic system folder (I already have a copy just for this purpose on the desktop) and then it will boot ok on the next run.
2. If I boot (9 or X) and don't touch the mac at all, it will hang up after about 10-15 minutes. If I reset and boot a second time, it won't freeze. So my practice for years has been: boot up, wait for the desktop to appear and restart immediately.
3. Many (but not all) applications fail to launch with an error (quitting unexpectedly), i.e. don't run at all. Some launch ok when the application is launched but quit when they're launched via a double click onto a related document.

How does that sound? Is there any hope for this machine at all? I would be eternally grateful for any solid pointers just as I'll be forever mad that I did not return this machine while it was still under warranty!

Applications :: Unable To Open Keynote Presentation File - File Corrupted?

Oct 18, 2010

Today I tried opening my keynotes presentation file to make amendments to it and when I double clicked on it, the program loading bar only loaded up a third of the way and then hanged. I then tried to save it to a flash drive and use it on a different computer, but when I tried to copy it over to the flash drive it gave me this error: "the finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "garment styles" could not be read or written error code - 36".

I have tried changing the file extension to a zip, then unzipping it and then renaming it but that did not work.(It wouldn't let me unzip it). I have also looked at the index file name to see if that was the problem, but that is as it should be.

I have also tried uploading it to a website and emailing it and it will not let me.

Is there anyway I can recover this file as I have been working on it for over a month and it is due next week, or will I need to start again?

IMac Intel :: Unable To Turn On System / No Fans Start Up And The Screen Does Nothing

Jan 25, 2007

My parents recently bought an iMac. Yesterday my mom was playing a game when the computer froze. Neither force quit or holding the power button was doing anything so in her frustration she unplugged the system. Today, after plugging in the system again, it won't turn on.

I press the power button on the side of the wireless keyboard and the green light on the keyboard turns on for about 3 sec and then starts flashing. No fans start up and the screen does nothing.

MacBook Pro :: System Update And Lost System Time And Background

Oct 30, 2010

I was asked to performed a system update with a reboot which I proceeded to do. Once the reboot was complete I had lost my system time (which had been reset to December 31, 2000 and my background had been replaced with the original generic MAC background. I have been unable to find the source of this issue and I am unsure how to fix this. I was able to change my clock by adjusting the Date & Time Preferences and fix my background image as well, but I am concerned that this is a temporary fix. Has anyone else experienced this with a system update?

PowerPC :: Unable To Run Off System Apps?

May 28, 2007

Just bought a second internal Hard Drive for my Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 machine. Simply for storage, so no system apps are going to run off it. I've researched enough, can't seem to find an answer in writing. Hopefully this is a simple question to answer...

Basically the HDD is a Seagate Baracuda SATA drive. You know how the old IDE drives came with a jumper pin that you can switch from Master to Slave? Well, it appears SATA drives have an option of 1.5GB/s or 3GB/s instead. (News to me! A personal first internal SATA install!) I certainly know what that means, just curious if I want the jumper capping my speed at 1.5GB/s on this specific older Mac model or if I should simply open it up to 3GB/s.

For the time being, I've left it capped at 1.5GB/s. It makes sense that the system BUS would be the definitive capper of HDD throughput...such is why I'm asking if there's any benefit of opening it up, or leaving it capped.

Software :: Unable To Start System / Gray Screen Fades Into White And Apple Logo Never Appears

Mar 19, 2009

I have had my MacBook for almost two years and the battery had just died on me. So I sent it back to Apple and got a new one. But ever since switching over to this new battery, my computer has had issues starting up. A grey screen fades into white and the Apple logo never appears. The computer will just stay like that for hours. A friend suggested turning the power off and back on, holding apple+ctrl+P+R, which worked. However, the next time I turned my computer on, the screen stayed white again, without an Apple logo. Can you tell me what the deal is? Should I bother reporting this to Apple? Is this permanent damage I'm going to have to go thru everytime I start me laptop? Any way to fix it? Thanks.

OS X :: Unable To Make Any Changes On System Preferences / Put Parental Control On System

Mar 29, 2010

could not be sure whether the Admin user - password reset with the CD would be the solution to my question as suggested in previous threads I searched - and have no idea where my start up install CD is

So my question-

I was trying to put parental control to ask for password when my computer starts up. I did something I guess and messed up the info.

I can log in with my own account when I restart my apple - which says now it is a standard account (must have messed that up)- but can not make any changes on system preferences or anything else that requires login and password. It requires Admin info. My own login that I use now used to be my admin so do not have any other info set.

now on system pref - accounts - an account titled "test" seems to be admin but can not even access that and reverse myself to be the admin since I can not unlock system pref. Or cant click on "Login Options" for the same reason.

There are no other users on this computer than me.

What do I need to do to make myself admin again?

Hope this was somewhat a clear question

OS X Technologies :: Symbolic Links Get Corrupted By System Process?

Apr 20, 2012

I am having a problem with symbolic links getting corrupted. I have a new Mac Pro running 10.7.3.

I have defined symbolic links:
/Users/walker/G2S -> /Volumes/L2A/G2S [this is pointing to a different partition on the same JBOD RAID]
/home -> /Users

The second link was created after unmounting /home and removing it from the /etc/auto_master file. Both symbolic links worked for several days. But then for some reason, without a reboot, the links became corrupted:
> pwd
/Users/walker
> ls -al G2S
lrwxr-xr-x 1 walker staff 16 Mar 24 03:08 G2S -> X??G???GÒ?G???G
> cd G2S
G2S: No such file or directory.

Same nonsensical definition for /home link. I repeat, this did not happen after a reboot. It first happened on /home. I thought that might have been related to a new OS handling of the "/home" label. So I deleted the /home link and did a clean reboot. The G2S link was created after that reboot, not before.

After the above two problems happened, I created a new symbolic link:
/Users/walker/G2S2 -> /Volumes/L2A/G2S

I then did not use this new symbolic link in any of my processing scripts. A few weeks went by, then this link somehow got corrupted too:
lrwxr-xr-x 1 walker staff 16 Apr 2 17:22 G2S2 -> G???G1?Gu?G

How symbolic links are managed on a Mac (any process that controls their linking?), or For example, could it be due to bad RAM? I have 32 GB.

MacBook :: Unable To Use System With Battery / Computer Shuts Down Hwen Start From Battery

My battery needed replacing for a couple of months before i dropped it from about knee level onto a sidewalk. After the drop I got the not charging icon. I thought maybe the battery had just finally died. so I did not panic about the no charge. The laptop works fine when plugged in to power with the old battery on or no battery at all. Not at all when unplugged.

When I put the brand new battery on the lap top, the computer shuts down halfway through boot up. I tried holding the power button down through boot up reset, as well as removing all power (plug and battery) and holding down the power button for 10 seconds reset.

Hardware :: Small File Size Limit To The FAT32 File System?

I was wondering if there is a small file size limit to the FAT32 file system. I recently picked up a 1TB WD external with Firewire (pre-formatted FAT32) and have been transferring movies and such fine, but I just tried transferring an HD movie (5GB) and some large .dmg's/.iso's and they all just fail with an error.

Is this a size limitation, and will i need to reformat the drive to fix it, or is there something else I'm missing?

MacBook Pro :: Can't Start From System Cd

Jun 9, 2012

I am having a problem with my Macbook Pro (OS6.8.8 2.4 GHz Intel core i5). I tried running through all maintenance procedures using Onyx and also tried disc utility to verify disc. Disc utility said to reboot from mother OS and repair harddisc but I can't start up from cd. Tried normal hold down 'C' during restart and also set disc as start-up disc in system preferences but only get a blank screen. The computer when booted from the hard disc (does boot but computer acting 'odd') shows the cd in the cd player and the cd opens so the cd player seems to be working. Also tried an external usb cd player and tried to boot the computer from the cd using this route but get same symptom - just a blank screen and after a short time the cd player stops spinning.

I am concluding that it is not a hardware problem but some software problem that is preventing me from booting from the cd.

Mac :: 2006 MacBook Won't Start In My System?

Aug 28, 2010

I have a 2006 Core Duo MacBook. I shut it down the other day and nothing unusual happened. But, now when I push the power button there's no response at all. Nothing. No lights, no response, no chimes, no screen flicker.Yes, I've read all posts I can find on this and nothing has helped. I've followed the SMC reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) and can't zap PRAM since it doesn't even chime. Battery shows a full five lights and the MagSafe cord shows a green LED. I've tried all sorts of booting with just battery, just power, leaving both out overnight but can't get any sort of response. I don't hear any fan motion or HDD whirring up. The power button doesn't seem to be stuck though--it's flush with the case and still gives that slight tactile "click" when depressed. I checked that the RAM's set properly.
