I'm looking for something like Sony Sound Forge, for mac...
Every once in a while my Mac Mini will start to chirp/squeak. It almost sounds like crickets. It started doing it again about 5-10 minutes ago and just stopped as I began typing this post. Does that sound like it could be the fan making the noise or the hard drive? I would think that if it were the drive I would here it MUCH more often.

I was wondering if there is a small file size limit to the FAT32 file system. I recently picked up a 1TB WD external with Firewire (pre-formatted FAT32) and have been transferring movies and such fine, but I just tried transferring an HD movie (5GB) and some large .dmg's/.iso's and they all just fail with an error.
Is this a size limitation, and will i need to reformat the drive to fix it, or is there something else I'm missing?
When ever I copy some files or create a file in my external USB drive which is a FAT32 one. file permissions are not preserved. All files/folders has 777 are permission. Is this how it work in mac or am I missing something?

I am a proud owner of a MAC powerbook G4 for just over 3 years now. It runs MAc OX 10.3. For the last two weeks i have been having issues. First it started to be very slow. Then it would not boot up and i got a blue screen. I ran the file system checks from the OS X and it complained about the volume being bad and said it could not be repaired. i decided to reinstall the whole thing and did a complete erase and install. IT booted up fine. The software updater asked permission to update which i agreed.
After the update was over, the software updater had more updates. I guessed that it was probably giving me updates in the chronological order. During a particular update, it gave the blue screen and "please restart" ... and when i rebooted it did not come up... just a blue screen... i verified the filesystem using the diagnostic tool and it again said it was corrupt .... I have done this twice now and i have a feeling it happened when i was updating the same batch of software updates.... sometimes my software updater would crash everytime i launch it.....
While copying files from my digital camera xD card onto my mini, the Card reader un-mounted itself and remounted its self several times, I have no idea why...Now I have a load of 0Kb files in the folder where I was copying to. I can delete these, but they come up with a "file in use" error message so I need to click for each file to be deleted... ~350 left I did try a restart thinking that may clear up any "pending" file transfers from the system to allow them to be deleted like a normal file

I have some old Dell 5.1 speakers that I am retiring, but I am a bit flummoxed on a good set of 5.1 speakers that will work with my Mac. (I do not want to use the Firewave or an external sound card
The Logitech Z-5500 look like they will do the trick with a Toslink To Optical Mini Adapter.
However, that is pricey for speakers. Do any of you know of some decent 5.1 Surround Sound speakers for the single mini port on the Mac?

I have a MBP 13". I updated it to 10.6.2 a while back and ever there was some kind of auto-detection going on where when I plugged in my MBP's headphone jack to external speakers I could adjust the volume all the way up to max. If I unplugged the speakers and play from the internal speakers I would turn it down to about 1/4 volume. The computer seemed to remember the volume settings for both scenarios and applied them appropriately when I plugged in/unplugged the speakers.

Having difficulty with a .ram file. I want to convert it to use with Quicktime. I also have realised however that my pupil for a lesson (the file is for language-lesson) does not have a Mac anyway, so maybe she won't have Quicktime. I can ask her to download the latter then. how can I hear the soundfile and make it compatible with Quicktime?

I just purchased a new Mac Pro (); however, I was a little disappointed with the sound card for a $3000 machine. I was previously using an older home-built PC with a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 PCI sound card. Would I be able to swap this sound card into my Mac Pro? I'm not looking to improve the sound quality so much; rather I'd just like to use all of my 5.1 speakers. I figure I've paid for 5.1 speakers, so I may as well use all of them instead of the 2.1 I'm limited to with the ports built in on the Mac Pro.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I just bought my MacBook Pro last year, and divided it 1/2 Windows 1/2 Mac -- I finally decided that I can't deal with Windows anymore..the viruses, spyware, and poor performance in general -- Only thing is I have to say bye bye to the 2 digital audio programs I've been using to make CHEERLEADING music for the past 5 years - SOUND FORGE (to cut my songs) and ACID PRO (to mix them) -- I already contacted SONY, and they don't currently offer any audio programs for Mac..The woman actually got a bit feisty when I asked them to re-consider =)
Anyway, to match SOUND FORGE, I've been playing around with Wave Pad, Audacity, and Twisted Wave..they all kinda do the trick, but it just doesn't seem to be enough -- The most important things I liked about SOUND FORGE were: 1) use of markers 2) being able to zoom in & out of the sound file with the scroll wheel on my mouse 3) having the freedom to drag & drop -- I found that using the zoom tool within any project, made cutting music twice as long..and some programs just don't support my scroll wheel, nor the drag & drop concept.
To match ACID PRO, I've been playing around with Reason, & Ableton Live, but they almost seem TOO pro for me..I don't even understand half of what they do. The most important quality about ACID PRO was it's loop based technology -- I loved being able to find a cut (previously created with Sound Forge) within the project browser, and tell Acid to read it as a loop (and the # of beats, depending on its length) or as a one shot. This automatic time-stretching/tempo-matching concept, & straight-forwardness is what I loved most about ACID -- It's like music for dummies! Pick, Paint, & Play..not to mention, unlimited tracks & cross-fading is a plus+++
I downloaded an .avi file and the sound won't play. It said the audio was in dolby ac3 code 8192 and I would need a plug-in. I tried converting to DivX and playing through Flip & that didn't work either. I tried placing the file in the library>audio>plug-in>component folder & that didn't work. There is no Quicktime folder to place it in.

I'm planning on having my imac just sitting on a table with visualizer running full screen and itunes in dj mode while the imac is hooked up to sound system, then I can moniter and control everything from my iphone anywhere in the building but I also want to have it so people can request songs and have them added to the list like remote and dj allows but I think it would be too complicated to have a actual itouch sitting there on the dj screen it'd be much better if I could have another computer sitting next to it in a request mode so people can browse the library and all and request songs like they could on the itouch but do it on a computer instead. I hope I made that understandable.

Here is what I currently have.
8-Core Mac Pro
40" 1080p LCD TV for Movie
24" LCD for doing graphic work
Harman Kardon Sound sticks (trying to get rid of this and replace it with a 5.1 or 7.1 system)
And here is what I'm buying
5.1 or 7.1 Receiver

My plan is to get audio out through the optical output. But according to several articles I read online, optical output does not transmit audio when I play music on iTunes or play games (in BootCamp), is it true? So far, I couldn't find any sound card (internal or external) which work for mac pro that has 3 analog 5.1 signal output which I can use with standard 5.1 speakers. The only things I found is the Creative DDTS-100 and the FireWire which were all discontinued. What other options do I have?
The sound system on my iMac keeps chirping like a cricket. This happens every few minutes and occurs both on internal and external speakers. It started a few weeks ago and I have made no major changes in the meantime. What is this and how do I make it stop?

Friends were having major problems with Mac OS 10.5.8. I tried to install 10.6 but the installation stalled several times. Through it all, I got OS 10.5.8 running for them again but the sound application is now missing, so I can't get the iMac to play sounds effects nor will it show the Harmann Kardon sound sticks as a sound output. They can't find their original install discs and I do not have that version. Will the sound application for system 10.6 work if I drag that file into their 10.5.8 system?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a really weird problem with my sound on my Late 2011 Macbook Pro. The only sounds I can hear from the internal speakers are system sounds. No other audio can be heard from iTunes, VLC, browsers, etc. The only sounds I can hear are the ones found in "System Preferences -> Sound -> Sound Effects" and iMessage notifications. For a while, I could hear the volume up/down chirp, but even that's gone now.
Everything is fine when I plug in headphones. I thought it was the microswitch in the headphone port, but the Macbook Pro defaults back to "Internal Speakers" when the headphones are removed. Resetting the SMC and running the normal Disk Utility routine doesn't work either. It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue with the speakers, either, or I probably wouldn't be able to hear only these specific sounds.
