OS X :: IMac - Possible To Dual Boot Tiger And Snow Leopard?
Dec 3, 2009I just ordered a new iMac and I'll be upgrading from a 1GHz TiBook with Tiger on it. I have some important music software that I'm not 100% sure will work with Snow Leopard, but my understanding is that it's already ok for Universal Binary. So I had the thought that maybe I could put Tiger on the iMac and dual boot. I've never dealt with a dual-boot system before, other than a couple times when I played around with Classic Mode when I still had Jaguar and/or Panther.

May 18, 2008Since I do development, I want to keep my iMac G5 at 10.4.11 (Tiger) while having 10.5.2 (Leopard) on an external drive for booting and customer support (in the meantime anyways - at some point, I may move the internal to Leopard and keep a version of Tiger on the external drive for customer support).Sounds none too difficult to achieve this. Attach external drive, insert installation CD, and follow instructions.
One thing that alludes me is the best way to make the applications available on the external Leopard boot. Can I just run them from the internal drive or will they need to be copied/installed on the external as well? Any really clear and useful resources on this type of thing?

Apr 29, 2010I have a G5 with a Tiger startup disk. I installed the HD from my retired MBP (with Leopard) into my G5 as a second hard drive. When I boot from Tiger, I can access the files on my Leopard disk, but not vice versa. I called Apple and they said it's most likely because the Leopard disk has a Laptop configuration, therefor it wouldn't look for another hard drive connected via sata. So my question is, how can I go about getting Leopard to look for another hard drive via sata? Is there an available driver?

Apr 6, 2009I have a MacBook Pro that came with Leopard. I am wondering if it is possible for me to shrink my Leopard partition and then install Tiger on a second partition. I have seen a similar thread about starting with Tiger and then adding a Leopard partition, but I want to go the other way around.
Also, is it possible for me to do this without having to reinstall Leopard, such as making a partition with Boot Camp and then tweaking it with the Disk Utility in the Tiger installer?
PowerPC :: Tiger Leopard On 2.5 G5/not Showing Dual Processors?
Feb 13, 2009I recently upgraded my powermac G5 dual 2.5ghz from tiger to leopard and for some reason it is no longer showing "dual" under "about this mac." In addition, under "more info" where it says number of cpu's it only says "1." Is there any way to fix this- is there a way to look in the bios and confirm that both processors are working correctly?

Dec 4, 2008A few months ago, while running Tiger on my Mac Pro, I installed a new additional hard drive and then installed Leopard on that new volume, calling it "Leopard".
The boot volume choice seemed to be a bit flaky the few times have rebooted while installing, but I went with the flow and didn't pay any attention to it.
Today, I installed a bunch of new software in this sequence:
On Leopard: I installed Windows Office for OS X and two immediate subsequent software updates for that, bringing me up to 12.1.4
I did Software Update for OS X, bringing me up to 10.5.5
I then had to restart. When my system rebooted, Tiger came up. (I wasn't quite paying attention). Then, I got a prompt for Software Update again, so I did that (for Tiger). I clued in that I was running Tiger (missing the obvious fact that my screen background was not Leopard.... duh), when I saw the Java 10.4, Version 7 update. Then, my Tiger BackUp kicked in, so that took a DVD write, and an Adobe Reader update. Phew.
So, then I go into Tiger System Preferences and set the boot volume to Leopard, and restart. Tiger comes up again. I go back into Tiger System Prefs and select Leopard to boot from, and this time I lock the preferences, and restart. No joy - Tiger comes back up. Each time it confirmed to me that it had selected Leopard as the boot drive.
OS X :: Tiger And Snow Leopard Boot Partitions
Sep 1, 2009I want to keep my tiger system to boot form and use. I also got SL (bugs aren't a big deal, I have my current system to use). I have a 500gb installed. I already have my tiger system on its partition. I have another all waiting to install SL. There is only a couple of applications that I always use that I will install on SL on top of the iLife stuff that comes with SL (I got the Tiger upgrade package). I don't plan on migrating them, but do a fresh install. What I'm concerned about is my airport/network and user account. If I already have my Tiger system and airport xpress working with a name, encryption and passwords.
Do I need to migrate those settings over or can I have a entirely new settings for the SL boot? IOW, does the airport store the settings and WEP Passwords and all that stuff and can't have a totally new set of settings when I boot off of SL? Also, my user account. I'm the only one who uses my computer so I just have the one admin account I set up when I first got the machine. So do I need to migrate thst over too? Or can I/should I create a totally new account for SL? Or can I create a new account, but keep the exact same name and passwords that I use under Tiger?
Power Mac G5 :: Can't Boot Into Tiger After Leopard Installation Fails
Nov 25, 2007Installation of Leopard on my Power Mac G5 failed. After that, I can't even boot into Tiger. Whenever I power on, it just stays at the grey Apple screen. I thought changing the hard disk might help. But my experiments proved that the same behavior persists even without any hard disk. Power on, "dong", grey apple screen: that's it. What happened?

IMac PPC :: Imac G3 Installation Of Tiger Cd Won't Boot?
May 14, 2012I have the CD version of tiger and am trying to install it to a recently purchased iMac G3. The Installer installs disc 1, resets, but doesn't boot up to install disc 2, it simply asks again to install disc 1. The Mac for some reason will not boot from the installed software and therefore I cannot complete installation. Can anyone figure out why the mac refuses to boot from the HD in order to install disc 2?

Oct 30, 2010I have two Macs that run Snow Leopard. Lion looks to be quite different and offer great new features, particularly the app store. So, can a Mac become dual boot like a Linux can? I mean, may I co-install Lion side by side with Snow leopard rather than overwrite it? I have successfully done this operation on a Linux Ubuntu netbook with two different versions of Ubuntu, and a Windows 7/Ubuntu netbook. But I've never tried this on a Mac. Does a Mac OSX install allow options for how the user will install the new OS?

Jan 14, 2010I have an Intel Macbook with 10.4.11 running, and I wanted to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I've heard that the $29 upgrade disc will work with 10.4, and I have a couple questions.
1. I lost the original 10.4 install disc that came with my computer - would that be a problem?
2. I'm in a college CS program, and I'd like to be able to dual boot Windows onto the laptop. I think in order to do that, I have to do a clean install of OS X after installing Windows - can I do that with the upgrade disc?

Dec 25, 2010I got a G4 iMac with a 1ghz powerPC and 512MB ram for Christmas - it came with Leopard.
It's not horrible slow but you can tell it's trudging along quite choppily at times (when I try to load anything in flash or youtube it can't handle it).
Would I be better off going to Tiger? I've never used Tiger before - would my experience on Tiger be horrible compared to Leopard?
IMac :: Trying To Install Tiger Or Leopard On G5
Jul 19, 2010I have an imac g5 2.1ghz (isight version). The previous hdd completely broke, so with great struggle I managed to open it up and put in a 500gb hdd, I'm now looking to fresh install OS x. I put tiger in the imac and hold 'c', it boots to a grey screen with a folder and an exclamation mark. I put the disk in and hold the option key, it goes to a menu where an hour glass appears for about 3minutes before my tiger install disk is found. The install disk has an image of a disk with a small cross in the bottom right corner (i thought it was supposed to have an image of cd itself, but at least its recognized) I click the cd to install and it goes to a white screen with the apple logo, after a brief minute, a spinny wheel appears and spins for about 3-5minutes.
The apple logo then changes to a cancel or stop sign but the spinny wheel is still spinning below...I left it for about 40minutes and it didnt go any further. I've tried several times with the same result, I've also created a bootable usb with tiger on it and had the same result after using a command on the open firmware comand line to boot the usb, a friend tried to create a usb with leopard on it, but after trying to boot it..i get a message saying "Load-size is too small" Here are some pictures (click the tabs to see all 4) [URL]
IMac PPC :: Can't Install Either Leopard Or Tiger On G4
Mar 7, 2012I just bought a used iMac g4 with the following specs: 1.25 ghz, 160 gb HD, 1 gb of ram, with a 20" screen (USB 2.0). It has OS X 10.3.9 installed. I have retail copies of tiger and leopard. The problem is that I can't get either to install. When i load the disk, the computer restarts, but then returns back to home screen. I've tried holding down "c", but that does nothing for me. I've also gone to start up disk in utilities, but all that is listed on there is my G4 hard drive and "network". The superdrive isn't listed on there. I know the super drive works; i've used it several times and i used it to open up the install disk. What am I doing wrong.

Jan 28, 2010I have an iMac G5 17" with 2GHz PowerPC G5 processor , originally had 512 MB RAM and has been upgraded to 2Gb RAM. The HD has been erased apart from the Tiger OS. I assume there is now 1Gb RAM in each slot ... not sure if the original 512 MB was split between two slots or if it was all in one slot. Have been using OS Tiger 10.4 up until now.
Recently I bought a RETAIL edition of Leopard 10.5.1 to install ( the one with the big X on the front) but after 10 minutes of the installation got the message "Install Failed ... Source Media Disc damaged" . I previously tried another Leopard installation disc and got the same message. I think it's unlikely that both installation discs are damaged; they are both new and came from reputable sources. I can reinstall Tiger without any problems. I have tried erasing the HD volume using Disc Utilities at the initial install stage but still get the same message .
A colleague has now advised me there have been problems with some iMac G5 machines with upgraded RAM when trying to install Leopard ... the Leopard installation disc does not like upgraded RAM.
Before I try and source some RAM to the original spec. ie 512MB, and then try again with Leopard, can anyone advise me if it might be worth taking out just one of the existing 1 Gb RAM modules ( I assume there are two there, I dont know for sure because the upgrade was done by a Mac Repair Shop ) and then trying the Leopard Install with just 1Gb RAM ? Or do I need to go back to the original 512Mb module(s) ?
IMac :: G4 700Mhz - Install Tiger Or Leopard?
Jun 5, 2010I know this concerns an older machine, but I was hoping to get some solid advice on this subject. I have retail copies of both Tiger and Leopard for my G4, and my OWC order just came in the mail, and after tearing it down, cleaning it up, and throwing a new 160Gb drive and 1Gb of memory into it, the machine is feeling extremely responsive under Tiger. My question is thus: everyone seems to think Tiger's days are numbered, which I can understand when you consider it's age. But how numbered are numbered? Safari and iTunes are still supported up to the current versions, Camino is still supported on 10.4 so when Firefox drops Tiger support I'm not without a Gecko based browser, and the other software I plan to use on this machine (iLife 06, OpenOffice, JDarkRoom and some old games, primarily) are all still good for Tiger.
My primary concern stems from the web browser issue, but more importantly, internet security on this machine. It's on a wired connection behind an AirPort Extreme so I don't know how worried I need to be, but last I checked security updates are not coming down for Tiger anymore from Apple, thus would the iMac become a potential target running Tiger? I don't want to be running bare arsed to the wind, if you'll pardon the expression. So I was hoping someone with a better understanding of software security could explain differences between Tiger and Leopard and wether or not that's a huge deal. I'm tempted to stick with Tiger, because now that the upgrades are in, it's lightning fast. Almost as fast as the MacBook fast, which is impressive from an eight year old machine.
PowerPC :: Installing Leopard / Tiger On Imac G4 1.0ghz
Nov 4, 2010ive got a Imac 17inch 1.0ghz with 215mb ddr ram. anyways, as Sheepy suggested, i upgraded her to a nice speedy 500GB 7200 Sata drive and dropped 1.5gb ram into her...... but lets take a step back. when i got her, she was full of dust and had tiger on her.. no dramas, tiger is good. anyways, i wanted to do a reinstall of tiger, and so grabbed my tiger retail disk and started her up, no dramas there either, ran disk util, repartitioned (the old disk) and started to install. the install never finished and then it just rebooted after about 80% through... The reboot came to the disk flashing with the osx face and a question mark. I try a few more times, with the same result, and also with Leopard, also with the same result, but the leopard install actually tells me after about 80% that "Install failed" try again? anyways, so i think its a shagged optical drive. i have a few lying around and i need to get in there anyways to upgrade the hard drive. installing the HD and the new Optical drive went fine, all works well.. and while i was there also installed 500mb ddr400 stick in the main memory non user slot. close her up, checked the heatsink matchup spots and there dry as a nuns nasty.. theres no paste on them, but kinda like a pad.. (which isnt even sticky either) anyways, i stick em back together (without) cleaning the pad stuff nor with applying any paste and boot her up. I insert the leopard disk to istall and it all goes fine, i re-partition the newspeedy 7200rpm sata disk and start the install. and again.... gets to about 90% and reboots. flashing smily face with alternating question mark.

Oct 20, 2006As you read this im haveing a terrible time on a sawtooth 400 that was hit by lighning in a storm and is now plauged with freezeing problems.So regretting to turn back to windows i made a quick steal of ebay for a dual 500 g4 + a super drive that burns dvds at 16x!! Im not no power user by anymeans i chat with adium x and use safari and do an occasinal bittorrent (legal of course) but the orignal problem with the g4 400 before the lighning struck it was VERRY SLOW! and I HATE waiting and it thought because of the dual prossesers it would move it along (and Low End Mac says pick a dual 500 over a single 700) so tell me if im gunna need to upgrade it.

-one iMac with cracked screen -- currently being used via dual monitor setup
-one new MacBook Pro (running Snow Leopard)
-a legitimate, family pack DVD for Leopard
I want to:
-reformat the iMac and install Leopard on the iMac via Target Mode/firewire using the DVD drive on my MBP
However, when I try to boot the MBP from the Leopard DVD, nothing happens.
I know this is kind of a mess, but it's the only viable solution I have been able to come up with. I can't install Leopard on the iMac from the Leopard DVD because I can't see the screen (due to the huge crack on my iMac) and it does not show up on the extra monitor.
Is there a way to safely force the MBP to boot from the Leopard install DVD?

Nov 15, 2009I have a Macbook running Leopard and an iMac running Tiger. I am looking to upgrade Leopard to Snow Leopard and Tiger to Leopard. If I were to purchase Snow Leopard and install it on the Macbook, would I then be able to use the copy of Leopard that came with the Macbook on the iMac? I am not trying to use 2 copies of the same thing on different machines, I just want to put a new os on one machine and move the existing one to another.I am reluctant to purchase the Mac Box Set version of Snow Leopard for the iMac because I do not want or need iLife and iWork.

Sep 13, 2009I have a iBook G3 laptop that has a new hard drive that has been formatted. I can't boot my Tiger DVD off the iBook when pressing the letter C. I receive a blinking folder icon. When I hook a firewire cable from the iBook to my Mac Pro running Leopard I can boot off the DVD. After I click on English as my language I receive a dialogue box stating I can't install Tiger on my Mac Pro. When I go to Disk Utility it does see the formatted new hard drive. I want to get Tiger on the new hard drive.
