Safari :: Update 5.1.5 - Error - There Is A Problem With Your Authentication, Possibly Due To Inactivity

Apr 19, 2012

Since recently updating Safari to 5.1.5, I can no longer access my online class. I AM able to log into my account, but when I click the link to enter my classroom I receive the following error: There is a problem with your authentication, possibly due to inactivity. For your safety, you have been logged out and must sign in again to continue.

I have thoroughly researched this issue. I attempted to delete all website data, deleted the cache, reset Safari. I have not had success with all of these attempted fix actions. I am NOT interested in reinstalling Lion--NOT happening. I am able to access from Firefox on my Mac, my work computer, my iPhone, my iPad, and my Windows PC with no problems. I tried on my wife's Mac with Safari 5.1.5 and I got the same error. So it is obviously an issue with the browser, not my machine.

Safari :: Suddenly Getting Certificate Authentication Errors?

Feb 2, 2012

The last few weeks I'm suddenly getting tons of "Warning: the certificate isn't valid" error messages when I go to sites on Safari. Normal sites: Facebook, Chase bank, amazon -- nothing suspect or out of the ordinary.  I haven't downloaded anything suspect, virus scans reveal no issues, no viruses... is this problem something inherent to the latest update of Safari?  Or, is there a setting I need to change - a box I need to tick - to make this stop happening?  It's so constant now that I can barely use Safari because every new URL generates authentication messages.

Safari :: Proxy NTLM Authentication On Lion

Feb 21, 2012

I working on an (let me say "enterprise") oddly problem. To connect to Internet our company make use of a http proxy, based on TrendMicro IWSS, configured to authenticate users with AD credential, forcing digest authentication with NTLM.

The loginout windows on safari reports "unencrypted" , but analyzing tcp/ip traffic with Wireshark, it really seems that NTLM has been used and so password is really crypted..

Windows On Mac :: Possibly Fatal Boot Camp Error / Unable To Boot Windows

Jul 14, 2009

In my attempt to install Windows XP via Boot Camp, I accidentally inserted an SP1 disc instead of the SP2 disc that I have. The installation proceeded to the point where it does for most who attempt this: the screen where you are prompted to press ENTER. I could not proceed and therefore restarted the iMac and held down the mouse button upon start-up to remove the CD.

HERE IS THE PROBLEM:I can not boot into OS X because the keyboard shortcuts (those that might allow me to select which partition to boot from and/or reset PRAM) seem to be disabled. Instead, a reboot always ends at a black screen with a blinking DOS-esque cursor, or the prompt: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key."

I have attempted inserting my SP2 disc at this point, to no avail. My keyboard seems to be disabled, as if the SP1 install proceeded just enough to establish itself as the boot drive without drivers for the keyboard. I've tried using all 3 USB ports, disconnecting other USB devices. Oddly, my bluetooth mouse works to eject the CD on reboot...

MacBook Pro :: MBP Not Sleeping After Inactivity?

Sep 12, 2009

Noticed that my new MBP with 10.6.1 wasn't going to "sleep" after the time specified in System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Computer Sleep. Closing the lid or choosing 'sleep' from the apple menu worked fine. After playing with it a while, I _think_ I might have narrowed down the issue:

First, a couple of questions to see if the problem I'm seeing is only my own, or a common issue.

If you are having the problem, is your MBP unibody? with SD slot or expresscard slot?

Are you using the Apple factory HDD or an aftermarket one?

How I fixed the issue: I had the option selected on the same preference pane to "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible." If I unchecked this item, the machine would sleep after the specified time of inactivity (Actually, it would take about 30 seconds longer while the machine wrote the memory contents to the HDD.)

If you had the problem, does this fix it for you? If you did NOT have the problem, does checking this box create the problem for you?

OS X :: IMac Not Go To Sleep Due To Inactivity

Aug 20, 2010

I have a C2D iMac about 3 years old, with 10.6 and all the updates. I have it set to go to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity. Sometimes at night I will use it to listen to a podcast or watch a TV show. When I do this, it never goes to sleep. It's always still on when I wake up. The display will sleep, but not the computer. I can put the computer to sleep myself through the Apple menu, but it never sleeps due to inactivity.

I'm worried that having the computer on 8 hours a night due to this problem will shorten its lifespan. Does anyone have an idea of what may be causing it? Does it have something to do with webpages being open? I always have Safari open. It's easier to leave pages open than it is to go through dialog boxes and menus to create and delete bookmarks all the time.

OS X :: Display Dimming For 2 Minutes Of Inactivity

Feb 5, 2009

I reset my PRAM yesterday to fix some issues with videos being choppy. It has helped somewhat in that regard, but I've noticed a new issue with my display becoming dimmed. I have my screen saver set to kick on after 5 minutes of inactivity. My display is set to turn off after 15 mins. My display is dimming, however, after 2 minutes of inactivity? It's very frustrating, and is actually causing me headaches because of the differences in brightness.

Means if I slide it to 5 minutes, I get the screensaver on after 5 mins, be it doing work or watching a movie in it.

OS X :: Memory Card Will Not Mount (Possibly Corrupt)

Jan 31, 2010

I'm having a bit of trouble trying to get a 4gb Memory Stick Duo to mount on my macbook running 10.6.2. My camera doesn't recognise the card when inserted and neither does my macbook. When I try connect it to the macbook I get the "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" with three options of: Initialise, Ignore, Eject. When I view the card in disk utility the repair and verify disk are greyed out as the screen shot shows. It says it is a 33mb disk when it should be 4gb and the SMART status is not supported and Partition Map scheme says it is unformatted. The format should be FAT (I think). It seems the card could be corrupted in some way or worse dead. Is there anyway of trying to recover the files, which are all photos?

MacBook Pro :: Possibly Dead Pixel On LED Display

Mar 5, 2010

I think I may have a dead pixel in my MBP. I've got the October 2008 model, the LED display. Today I noticed a little grey-ish speck in the display. And trust me, it is IN it, not ON it. Believe me, I wouldn't be wasting anyone's time if this was something that could simply be cleaned off. It is not visible when the display is off; when that area is dark, the spot is visible as a lighter grey as compared to the surrounding area; when that area is white/light, it appears as a darker grey color compared to the surrounding color. Having said all that, I have still cleaned the screen thoroughly several times but to no avail. It is visible from the boot screen (white screen with the apple) and as long as the screen is on, but again it disappears when I turn it off. From all this, I gather that it is likely a dead pixel. I have reset the PRAM and of course that didn't help. I called Apple and they agreed with me, so I went ahead and set up an appointment for the Genius Bar (almost an hour away).

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Getting Hourly Beachball (Possibly Time Machine)

May 14, 2012

I am having this problem since may be a week. I am suspecting that it started after updating to 10.7.4 Lion.Every hour, in my case at 47 minutes of the hour, I get a spinning beach ball and my MacBook becomes (sometimes completely) unresponsive. This happened in several programs including, Safari, Word, PowerPoint, Mail, Address Book etc etc.

Once I noticed that when this was happening my Time Machine icon was spinning (preparing backup). So I thought it might be related to that. Especially since time Machine tries to backup every hour. Now I usually backup every couple of days by connecting my USB drive, and have never had these problems before. I am guessing that every time Time Machine tries to make an hourly backup my computer for some reason becomes unresponsive.

I kept an eye out for it and indeed every time it happens it is at minute 47 of the hour in my case. And it happens every hour. Although I usually do not see the spinning Time Machine icon since my MacBook usually becomes almost completely unresponsive and reacts to almost nothing. I am guessing that's why I only noticed the time Machine icon spinning just once.

MacBook :: Battery Stops Charging After Sometime / Possibly Submerged In Water

Sep 2, 2009

I was on a long bus ride and woke up in the morning and noticed everything under my seat was wet including about two inches of one end of my black MacBook. It was in one of those ubiquitous neoprene cases and while not submerged in water it was pretty wet. Oh, and I guess I don't know if it was water or not, but it didn't have an obvious color, smell, etc.

Anyway, I took out the battery and left it out for a little over a day hoping it would dry. When I put it back in and opened it up it seemed everything was working well and I worked on it under battery power for a little while. It suddenly shut off with the battery around 23% (it usually dies at 8%, I don't know why) and when I plugged it in and started up again the battery showed it was charging for about 10 or 20 seconds then said "Not Charging" then I got the little battery with an 'X' in it meaning there is no battery connected.

If I take it out and put it back in again it does the same thing (says it's charging for a moment then ends up with the 'X'). The odd things is that the water was on the non-battery end of the computer, it was on the end with the CD drive, which seems to be working. Okay, right, so is there anything that can be done? Is this battery just a nice, black paperweight? Is there reason to believe that something other than the battery has a problem?

If this battery is toast, where is a good place to buy a new battery? Do official Apple resellers sell them? I'm in Argentina right now and I don't think they have real Apple stores.

MacBook :: Hear And Feel Clicking (Possibly Hard Drive)

May 4, 2010

I have a 13" Late 2008 Al. Macbook, and something strange just happened. I was typing in Pages, when I started to hear and feel something clicking underneath my right palm. I recognized this as the hard drive, so I immediately shut down the computer. Tried restarting and heard the clicking again, so I held down the power button and force shut it down before it fully started up. Turned it around, removed the battery for a couple of seconds, then replaced it. Started up again, and the clicking disappeared; all my files are here as they were left.
