Safari :: Suddenly Getting Certificate Authentication Errors?
Feb 2, 2012
The last few weeks I'm suddenly getting tons of "Warning: the certificate isn't valid" error messages when I go to sites on Safari. Normal sites: Facebook, Chase bank, amazon -- nothing suspect or out of the ordinary. I haven't downloaded anything suspect, virus scans reveal no issues, no viruses... is this problem something inherent to the latest update of Safari? Or, is there a setting I need to change - a box I need to tick - to make this stop happening? It's so constant now that I can barely use Safari because every new URL generates authentication messages.Â

After upgrading to Safari 5.1.4 I'm constantly getting error meesage pop-ups similar to these.Currently I'm running Lion 10.7.3 My computer time & date is correct. I have reset Safari's cache / cookies, etc to no no avail. On some websites its no displaying graphics properly and its starting to get extremely frustrating.Safari is running in 64-bit mode .Is it time to uninstall Safari 5.1.4 and install the previous release?

I'm running 10.6.8 on an Intel dual quad-core mac, 2.6ghz, tons of RAM. Latest version of Safari. And I am constantly getting that drop-down error message (at completely legitimate sites like Facebook, MSNBC, Amazon, etc) that says "certificate may be expired, do you want to cancel/continue/trust" - and I have no idea why. It's happening with Firefox and Chrome as well, but I really prefer to stick with Safari if possible.Â
Date on my Mac is set properly, so that can't be the issue. Security settings are at the Mac's default. I've tried emptying the cache and clearing history, reinstalling safari & its latest updates - nothing fixes the problem. The same thing is happening on my Macbook Pro (which connects to the wifi), so I'm convinced that it's an errant software setting somewhere in Safari or my network settings. Â

I was wondering if it was possible to tell Safari to look in multiple or different keychains for login credentials. I have x509 certificates that I want to put in a different keychain from the default "login" one, but when I surf to a webpage that requires that certificate, Safari doesn't seem to want to use it.
Using safari 3.1.1 (5525.20) on OSX 10.5.3

In the last month, I've been getting "unknown certificate" notices from Safari. I don't see anything wrong with the certificate details, but I'm not sure what to look for. The notices tell me that without the certificate, I won't know if it is a trusted site: the purpose of the certificates I guess. None of the notices were from first time sites. i.e. I was going there on purpose, not through any links, etc. What's up? Should I be concerned? How do I detect if I SHOULD be concerned by information in the details of the certificate?

1. Very recently I keep getting the message 'Cannot verify certificate of server' on a great number of webpages on my mac, including this apple site.  This has been around the time of getting an iPhone, perhaps a coincidence?   I have never seen this message before. I press 'continue' however it's getting a bit annoying.Â
2. Also, since getting this message my facebook page cannot load properly on safari (mac). It comes up mis-aligned on the page, in times new roman font,  with no colour or logos/images. This is around the time of changing the password of my facebook account via my iPhone, again, not sure if this is a coincidence. I'm on snow leopard 10.6.8. I working on an (let me say "enterprise") oddly problem. To connect to Internet our company make use of a http proxy, based on TrendMicro IWSS, configured to authenticate users with AD credential, forcing digest authentication with NTLM.
The loginout windows on safari reports "unencrypted" , but analyzing tcp/ip traffic with Wireshark, it really seems that NTLM has been used and so password is really crypted..

Since recently updating Safari to 5.1.5, I can no longer access my online class. I AM able to log into my account, but when I click the link to enter my classroom I receive the following error:Â There is a problem with your authentication, possibly due to inactivity. For your safety, you have been logged out and must sign in again to continue.Â
I have thoroughly researched this issue. I attempted to delete all website data, deleted the cache, reset Safari. I have not had success with all of these attempted fix actions. I am NOT interested in reinstalling Lion--NOT happening. I am able to access from Firefox on my Mac, my work computer, my iPhone, my iPad, and my Windows PC with no problems. I tried on my wife's Mac with Safari 5.1.5 and I got the same error. So it is obviously an issue with the browser, not my machine.

Ever since YouTube has updated their video page, I keep on getting these "Old Flash - Go Upgrade!" error messages. I have re-installed Flash twice and I'm still getting the problem... however, just refreshing the page seems to work - but is getting very annoying.
I'm using Safari 4, anyone else having this problem?

Every time I try to connect to any social media websites and a few others, I experience one of a few things. The first being an SSL error. This happens on Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and even Google. The second is an SSL error again, BUT I can proceed anyway, which brings me to the third issue. I get onto the website but all the graphics on the website are gone and I get something looking like the image below. Time and date are correct.

I am running MAC OSX 10.6.3 and are having the following issues
About a Week ago I noticed I was having issues on certain web pages with opening links within the page. Example: A webpage im having a lot of errors on is Gunbroker.com If I click "add to my watch list" safari just sits there and does not open the page. Same for Firefox. Other links on the page work fine. I tried this site and others on my other macbook and it works just fine. Random links within webpages seem not to work.
I have tried to reset safari, clear caches, verify permissions and fix errors on Disk Utility still no fix. I also reinstalled firefox just not safari because of my favorites.
Any Ideas? If this has already been discussed please let me know I will try to find a thread. I did do a search but could not really find much pertaining to this issue.

A couple of weeks ago, I suddenly started seeing pop ups in both my Chrome and Safari browsers. I have pop up ads turned off in both, went so far as to uninstall Chrome and the .dmg for it several times, cleared all histories, cookies, extensions, etc, etc. What's even more maddening is that it happens while just using plain old Google to do a search. I have cleaned out all old pics and documents via Finder that I no longer needed. I have nothing new that has caused this change. So what the heck is happening here??? I have been trying to track this isue down and can't find a solution. Firefox seems to be the only thing unaffected at this point, but I migrated away from Mozilla a long time ago. I've tried searching Google's forums, but the fact it's happening in Safari suggests it's something within my Mac. I've run a virus scan (semi-redundant, I'm aware, but I'm grasping) and all is clear. Do I try a malware search now?

I'm not sure what started this but suddenly Safari continuously crashes and re-crashes when trying to re-open. This is frustrating as I don't see many reports on this problem on this site.

I have a 4-year old Mac and have noticed lately that it freezes up when I am using Safari. I'll be on a website and all of a sudden, it just freezes. The only way I can fix the problem is to manually turn off the computer and restart it again. Nothing works - unable to use the force quit command or the dock to close Safari. Why this might be happening, or if there's another way to deal with it when it happens besides turning off the computer?

This problem involves my wife's Intel i7 iMac11,1 with a 27" screen. She started having problems with her email app (Entourage). I was unable to fix it. I finally recommended that we restore a previous incarnation of the MacOS 10.6.8 by restoring from Time Machine to the main hard drive. After Restore had finished, I tried to open several apps without success. I then used Disk Warrior 4.3 to update the iMac by booting the DVD on my Mac Pro and putting the iMac in Target Disk Mode since the iMac can't boot DW 4.3, but 4.3 can be used via Firewire to create a revised directory.
The non-Apple apps seemed to run fine after that, but I couldn't get some Apple apps to open. They would suddenly quit while they were in the process of opening. I then used the Apple Application Install DVD that came with the iMac to install the Apple Apps with the hope that the Apple Apps would open correctly and then I could update them from Apple Downloads or Software Update. When the install disk finished installing Apple Apps, I tried to open Safari to go the Apple Downloads, but Safari still quit suddenly during my attempt to open it. In desperation, I opened Firefox 6.0.1 and went to Apple Downloads.
There, I downloaded Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v 1.1 followed by a security update that ended with the number 1. After restart, I found that Font Book and DVD Player and iDVD and Garage Band and Quick Time Player 10.0 and iCal and Image Capture and iMovie and Calculator and Automator and Address Book and the Mail app and Preview and System Preferences and Text Edit and Grab app and Terminal opened without quitting, but Safari and Dictionary and iPhoto and Dashboard and App Store and iTunes still quit suddenly when I tried to open them. I didn't try the remaining Apple apps. Testing some non-Apple apps, VMware Fusion and Google Earth and MacScan all opened without quitting.
There are four events that may shed additional light. The backup power source went flaky a couple of days ago and it went on and off battery power rapidly until I unplugged it. Second, a power strip for my wife's iMac has since been plugged directly into the house current with no backup battery. Third, yesterday, the room became quite warm and the back side of the iMac became very warm or hot, but not bad enough to burn skin. Fourth, my wife insists on storing many of her files on the desktop. The desktop is virtually full of icons. I took a bunch of folders that she had on the desktop and put them in a folder in Documents, but there a quite a few folders still on the desktop and I estimate they will more than fill the screen if the files in them were all moved out of the folders and onto desktop.
It's handy and she can work faster than looking for them in Documents. Is it possible that power bumps from the house current or from the flaky backup battery could have damaged hardware or could such events damage software that is not replaced by the Restore from Time Machine? Could overheating damage hardware or software that is not replaced by Restore or the 10.6.8 Combo Update? Could too many files and folders cause the problems I'm having? She's operated this way for a year without problems, but I think the number of files had gradually increased during that time. I'm posting this message using Firefox 6.0.1.

With Lion, my Safari pages suddenly double in size with a slight movement of my mouse. Also, with Lion, when I leave my iMac for some period of time, the pages freezes and the cursor point pixilates when I move the mouse. I have to turn off the computer and put in my password to restore functions.

I have a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X, Version 10.6.8 and Safari has started running really slowly, all of a sudden. I've tried Firefox and Google Chrome, which run faster, but not much. Wi-Fi has been checked and is not the problem. I've emptied my cache and reset Safari. My disc usage is 15%, my system memory says that I have 2.35 GB of free space, and there are no "page outs". All of the programs, on my computer, that do not require internet access run fine. My firewall is off.

I keep having pages suddenly minimize when I didn't tell it too. This happens most frequently in Safari but also with Excel, Word and anything else I have open. Also, when I'm scrolling down a page, suddenly the page behind it will show up. It isn't because I accidentally scrolled over there. Maybe these little glitches need to be handled by the Genius Bar at an Apple Store. I'd like to avoid that, if possible.
