OS X Mavericks :: MDS-Stores 99.9% CPU Causing Freeze On Log In

Jun 22, 2014

My macbook running mavericks froze earlier today with everything but the mouse becoming unresponsive, since then I have tried rebooting in safe mode (which has been fine) and then normally a number of times, but everytime I do I always end up with the same problem i started with. I managed to get activity monitor open before it froze the last time and found that mds_stores is running at 99.9% CPU.

I understand that it is in relation to spotlight but have spotlight set to look at nothing in system prefs.

is there any way I can start up without the system remembering to start the process that is causing mds_stores to run as I feel this is the problem. I have tried quitting the process in activity monitor to no avail.

OS X Mavericks :: Recurrent System Freeze And Jagged Lines Through Screen

Jul 1, 2014

I am having very frequent system freezes (multiple per day) then when restart the restart is very slow. Activity Monitor shows TechToolsupportDaemon taking up 99-120% of CPU for extended periods.  I have a MacBook Pro 15-iInch, Early 2011, with 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7; 8 GB 1333MHz DDR3; Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB; running OS X 10.9.3 (13D65).

I am also having episodes for sudden abnormal graphics with jagged lines, Screen split vertically with multiple horizontal lines. Screen becomes totally unreadable. Then sudden total screen freeze.

I made rescue system drives on flash drive when I first shifted to Maverick, so I could use Disk Utility to Verify and/or repair the main disk.  When I upgraded to the next edition of Maverick, my flash drives no longer worked. I tried to upgrade the flash drives to the new system, but there was not enough room. I tried erasing the drives but now I have a flash drive with only a small amount of space, the rest is hidden and locked.

What do I need to do to correct the problem of frequent freezes, and then How can I free space on my flash drives?

MacBook Pro :: MBP Not Sleeping After Inactivity?

Sep 12, 2009

Noticed that my new MBP with 10.6.1 wasn't going to "sleep" after the time specified in System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Computer Sleep. Closing the lid or choosing 'sleep' from the apple menu worked fine. After playing with it a while, I _think_ I might have narrowed down the issue:

First, a couple of questions to see if the problem I'm seeing is only my own, or a common issue.

If you are having the problem, is your MBP unibody? with SD slot or expresscard slot?

Are you using the Apple factory HDD or an aftermarket one?

How I fixed the issue: I had the option selected on the same preference pane to "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible." If I unchecked this item, the machine would sleep after the specified time of inactivity (Actually, it would take about 30 seconds longer while the machine wrote the memory contents to the HDD.)

If you had the problem, does this fix it for you? If you did NOT have the problem, does checking this box create the problem for you?

OS X :: IMac Not Go To Sleep Due To Inactivity

Aug 20, 2010

I have a C2D iMac about 3 years old, with 10.6 and all the updates. I have it set to go to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity. Sometimes at night I will use it to listen to a podcast or watch a TV show. When I do this, it never goes to sleep. It's always still on when I wake up. The display will sleep, but not the computer. I can put the computer to sleep myself through the Apple menu, but it never sleeps due to inactivity.

I'm worried that having the computer on 8 hours a night due to this problem will shorten its lifespan. Does anyone have an idea of what may be causing it? Does it have something to do with webpages being open? I always have Safari open. It's easier to leave pages open than it is to go through dialog boxes and menus to create and delete bookmarks all the time.

OS X :: Display Dimming For 2 Minutes Of Inactivity

Feb 5, 2009

I reset my PRAM yesterday to fix some issues with videos being choppy. It has helped somewhat in that regard, but I've noticed a new issue with my display becoming dimmed. I have my screen saver set to kick on after 5 minutes of inactivity. My display is set to turn off after 15 mins. My display is dimming, however, after 2 minutes of inactivity? It's very frustrating, and is actually causing me headaches because of the differences in brightness.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Screensaver Always On - Not Detecting Inactivity

May 23, 2012

Recently I am having issues with the screensaver setting, it comes on every time I reach the log-in page while booting, and instead of turning on after 'x' minutes of inactivity it just gets turned on after 'x' minutes. Means if I slide it to 5 minutes, I get the screensaver on after 5 mins, be it doing work or watching a movie in it.

Safari :: Update 5.1.5 - Error - There Is A Problem With Your Authentication, Possibly Due To Inactivity

Apr 19, 2012

Since recently updating Safari to 5.1.5, I can no longer access my online class. I AM able to log into my account, but when I click the link to enter my classroom I receive the following error: There is a problem with your authentication, possibly due to inactivity. For your safety, you have been logged out and must sign in again to continue.

I have thoroughly researched this issue. I attempted to delete all website data, deleted the cache, reset Safari. I have not had success with all of these attempted fix actions. I am NOT interested in reinstalling Lion--NOT happening. I am able to access from Firefox on my Mac, my work computer, my iPhone, my iPad, and my Windows PC with no problems. I tried on my wife's Mac with Safari 5.1.5 and I got the same error. So it is obviously an issue with the browser, not my machine.

Jul 2, 2012

I have my set Mac Pro to sleep after 1 hour of "inactivity" and not wake for ethernet administration access. My question is: What is "inactivity"? It seems that my computer never sleeps fully. I have iStat Menus and Dropbox installed. Will the computer sleep no matter what if I don't touch the keyboard or mouse or unplug/plug stuff in/out? Or will certain apps keep it from sleeping? I am worried that something is preventing it from sleeping.

MacBook :: DVD Playback - Sometime Freeze?

Aug 30, 2010

Good evening, all. I searched the forum but didn't see anything related to what I'm asking. Does anyone have any problems playing back DVDs? I have to remember to take DVD player out of full-screen playback because it will sometimes freeze and I have to power down. In addition, sometimes while I'm viewing a DVD de-interlaced, the screen is garbled. Switching the de-interlacing off gives me the picture back. I took a picture of what it looked like the one time it locked up on me.

Mac Pro :: Freeze - Hang During Startup

Apr 27, 2008

I have a mac pro running leopard (purchased in 2/08) and it was running beautifully for almost 2 months with no hangs, crashes or freezes. Then, for some reason, today when I turned it on, it would not boot. It would get to the apple logo, then just sit there for a few minutes, then reboot itself and the same thing would happen.

I pulled out the ethernet cable, unplugged all usb except keyboard/mouse and it would then (sometimes) boot into the system, log me in and present me with the UI. I then quickly performed a soft reboot and it would get to the desktop. However, I can only use it for anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes before it would completely lockup. The clock freezes, the mouse freezes and it just sits there forever. I have tried booting into Vista (BootCamp) and it also freezes before startup is complete....................

OS X :: Won't Work With 10.4 / Freeze On Log In Screen

May 3, 2009

never had a problem with a freezing mac in 5 years of mac use so wouldn't like it to start now. Whilst using firefox this morning it froze, force quit wouldn't work, entire screen froze. Keyboard shortcut wouldn't allow me to shut down, so I had to shut down via the on/off switch.

When I came to switch it on again it loads up to the log in screen, the mouse moves around the screen but when I click on my username nothing happens. I've taken out all USB cables, switched wireless keyboard and mouse on and off etc, restarted, no joy. Next I tried to startup with the c key and install disc, but again I got to the log in screen and nothing happened. I'm assuming as I can't log in and get to a desktop that is why it's not allowing me to start with the disc?
