I'm told SATA drives are the thing to get.
I don't know what a SATA drive is, or whether it is compatible with my machine.

Jul 10, 2009I have two drives in my Quicksilver 2002 G4, one is a 250GB which can be fully used, the other an 80GB. Can U rid both of these drives and install two SATA 1.5TB drives? I do not want to use the PCI slots for a SCSI card and wire additional drives that way, because the transfer speed will be limited to 40mbps I believe. I have a Sonnet card a dual PPC 1,8Ghz card, a PCI USB 2.0 card and have other open PCI slots, but finally ran out of storage, and have a use for this machine to hold a LOT more. Other than the transfer speeds possible on SATA, are there any other differences between the original IDE (ATA) drives? Do they connect the same way?

Feb 19, 2010I have used an optical caddy to fit a SSD into my macbook pro along with the existing 500GB hard drive. My next ambition is to fit 2 hard drives and a SSD inside the macbook pro. My questions are:
1) Can I use a Sata port doubler (Do they exist?) to run 2 hard drives through one sata port. (The bandwidth is there)
2) Failing the above can I use a cable linking a sata drive to the airport express slot? (is it PCI express?)
Mac Pro :: Does MiniG Support Seagate Hard Drives?
Oct 16, 2006I'm really interested in buying a 2 drive miniG FW800 enclosure for my powermac G4. I have two 400GB seagate 7200.8 drives that I want to use with this enclosure. The only thing stopping me from buying the miniG is that their site says that they don't support Seagate drives becuase they are too hot compared to other hard drives. Does anyone have a miniG with Seagates inside? I know the power supply is outside and it only has a small fan inside, I don't mind if the fan works harder or I'll even replace the fan with a better one if i have to. I just want this enclosure bad but can only have it with seagate drives since that's all I buy.

May 9, 2009I am buying a used Powermac, G5 Dual 2GHz. It already has a SATA 320GB HD in it but I want to use my SATA 160GB from my dead iMac. The only questions I have are:
1. Is there anything special I need to do installing the second SATA drive? Does the drive need to be set to Slave or Cable Select?
2. Because the 160GB (going to use for storing musc) drive has OS X Tger installed, will it be a problem when booting once I install both drives? The 320GB drive has Leopard (This will be my primary drive). Will it boot to Leopard and let me use disk utility for format the 160GB drive?

After many user complaints, Apple addressed the issue with a firmware update, but it seems the MBPs hardware has a problem with full SATA II speeds since many users reported issues with 3rd party drives after the firmware update.

Nov 12, 2010I see Seagate & WD have announced these but I'm struggling to find many available to order. Only the WD Green one appears to be even offered as an internal option. What is more it is more expensive buying the internal drive than buying the external USB one.
Has anyone bought one of these externals and stripped out the drive to put in their Mac Pro? I'm running out of space on my 1.5TB and swopping to 2TB hardly seems enough.
PowerPC :: Two Hard Drives On G4 But Not Plugged / Screwed In
Dec 9, 2007A buddy of mine has had a Power Mac G4 sitting around for a while now. I asked him about it, and he told me that I could have it if I wanted. He really only uses his MacBook Pro anyways. So, I get home, plug it all in, and nothing happens. I opened up the side and everything seems to be in place. There seem to be 2 hard drives, one which isn't screwed in. One of them isn't plugged in, I'm not too sure what that's about. Power supply is there, RAM is there. I don't know why it's not coming on. When I push the power button, a light on the front flashes for a second, but nothing happens. I know it needs a RAM upgrade, and probably a processor upgrade as well. However, first, I'd like to get it running first.

I have the original HD 149GB (now 5 years old), and have bought a new 1T HD, and was planning on setting them up as a striped RAID0. Is this a bad idea? Should I purchase a second 1T HD and do a RAID0 or RAID1 setup instead?

PowerPC :: Hard To Read / Write To External Drives With G5
Sep 17, 2007This issue has been killing my work flow for quite awhile. I have a G5 dual 2.0. I can barely read or write files to an external hard drive. Say I try and copy 1.56GB of audio (12 files) from my external drive it will start to copy then stop at 500mb for minutes then start moving as normal and stop again around 900 for minutes.. then again at 1.4. This also happens when writing.
Here is the confusing part. This happens with two external drives (different models) with firewire 400, 800 and USB. I have reinstall OSx. I have repaired permissions and ran repair disc on everything. These hard drives work FLAWLESS with my Macbook Pro as well. Gr what can this be? It takes forever to copy data to or from a drive which is often how I transfer audio between my desktop and laptop. I should soon have Mac Pro money and this crappy G5 can go out the window. I am on 10.4..

Your MacBook Pro comes standard with a 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive. Choose a hard drive with a faster speed for greater performance. Or you can choose a solid-state drive that offers enhanced durability.
Basically suggesting that the HDD option has a performance advantage over the SSD, but is this the case? I always thought SSDs could read & write quicker because they use solid-state flash memory as opposed to hard disks.
I want to go with the 256GB SSD but I want to know how it ranks in speed.
